Think Fun Cars Are Too Expensive? These 10 Used-Car Bargains Can Be Found Under $10K

A Miata, WRX, Boxster, hot hatch or older Corvette may fit a sub-$10,000 search—but condition, mileage and maintenance determine whether it is truly a bargain.

In the U.S. used-car market, $10,000 can still open the door to a lightweight roadster, a hot hatch, an all-wheel-drive performance sedan or an older sports car. Road & Track’s July 14, 2026 guide identifies the ten candidates below as cars that can be found below or near that price, depending on model, mileage and condition. That is a shopping possibility, not a promise that a clean example will fit the budget—or that the purchase price covers what it needs next.

10 fun used cars to look for under $10,000

The price descriptions below reflect Road & Track’s editorial guide, not live listing checks or guaranteed sale prices. “Near $10,000” and “higher-mileage” matter: a car advertised at the ceiling may leave little room for inspection, repairs or maintenance.

Car What makes it appealing What the price claim means What to check
Mazda MX-5 Miata A lightweight, balanced roadster with open-top driving; the guide also highlights the shifter in NA and NB generations. NC-generation examples can fall below $10,000; early ND examples are approaching that price point. Compare generation and condition, and decide whether two seats and limited cargo space suit your use.
Subaru Impreza WRX An all-wheel-drive performance sedan with rally heritage. The guide includes it among cars attainable below $10,000, without establishing a typical price or condition. Research common problems and inspect maintenance history carefully; performance modifications and hard use make an individual car’s condition especially important.
Porsche Boxster (986) A mid-engine convertible with a naturally aspirated flat-six; manual examples offer an enthusiast-oriented configuration. The guide says examples can be available well below $10,000. Look for maintenance records, including documentation concerning the IMS bearing, and account for the cost and availability of specialist work.
BMW Z3 A two-seat roadster with a more luxurious character than the Miata, as the guide describes it. Listed as a below-$10,000 possibility; no specific model year or condition is guaranteed. Assess service records, vehicle condition and the parts and repair costs for the particular example.
Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S The original rear-drive coupe twins are aimed at engaging driving rather than outright power. Higher-mileage examples are starting to enter the sub-$10,000 range. Expect mileage and condition to drive the trade-off; inspect for wear and evidence of track or modified use.
Ford Fiesta ST A modern hot hatch with a practical hatchback layout and sporting character. Used examples are starting to dip below $10,000, according to the guide. Check the specific car’s maintenance history and condition rather than assuming a low asking price means low ownership costs.
Porsche 944 An older sports car the guide considers compelling for the money. Included as a below-$10,000 candidate, with no assurance of a sorted example at that price. The guide explicitly warns about ownership costs. Verify maintenance and parts needs before treating the purchase price as the whole budget.
Honda Civic Si (EP3) A usable, affordable all-rounder in the guide’s assessment. EP3-generation examples can be found under $10,000. Condition and service documentation still matter; evaluate the car as an individual used vehicle, not just as a model name.
Chevrolet Corvette (C4 or C5) A two-seat sports-car option, with the guide identifying both generations as possible entry points. C4 examples can be found under $10,000. High-mileage C5 examples are near $10,000, and the guide cautions that a C5 at that price may not be clean. Do not treat a C5 near the ceiling as equivalent to a clean, lower-mileage car. Inspect condition and budget for repairs.
Mazdaspeed 3 A performance-oriented hatchback that combines everyday utility with a more powerful character. First-generation cars can be found below $10,000; some higher-mileage second-generation cars are reaching that range. Check mileage, service history and condition closely, especially when a car’s asking price is near the budget limit.

Road & Track’s list is a useful starting point, not an independent price guarantee. Its guide warns that an attractive entry price may be offset by parts scarcity and preventive maintenance. See Road & Track’s enthusiast-car guide for its full list and discussion.

How to choose the right kind of fun

For open-air, lightweight driving

Start with the Miata if a small, two-seat convertible is the point. The Z3 is another roadster option if you prefer the guide’s more luxurious framing. A 986 Boxster brings a mid-engine flat-six layout, but it also makes maintenance history and repair planning central to the decision.

For a practical car with an enthusiast edge

The Fiesta ST, Civic Si and Mazdaspeed 3 offer hatchback or compact-car practicality. They are different propositions: the Fiesta ST is the hot-hatch choice, the EP3 Civic Si is presented as an all-rounder, and the Mazdaspeed 3 adds a more powerful character. Compare the specific car’s condition and intended use rather than assuming one is automatically the cheapest to own.

For all-weather traction or rear-drive balance

The WRX is the all-wheel-drive option in this group. The BRZ/FR-S twins emphasize rear-drive engagement. Those are distinct priorities, not interchangeable performance labels; consider where and how you drive, then inspect the individual car for wear, modifications and maintenance.

For an older sports-car experience

The 944 and C4 Corvette can offer a more classic sports-car feel; a C5 may approach the budget mainly as a high-mileage purchase. With older or high-mileage cars, the condition of the example and the evidence of upkeep can matter more than the model’s reputation.

Make the $10,000 budget realistic

Separate the advertised price from the amount you can spend on the car overall. A cheap listing is not necessarily a cheap car to make dependable: preventive maintenance, scarce parts or deferred repairs can change the economics quickly. The guide does not establish a fixed repair allowance for any of these models, so do not treat a particular extra amount as universally sufficient.

  • Check local asking prices. Availability and prices vary by location, model year, mileage, trim and condition. The guide’s market claims are not live listing quotes.
  • Read records before falling for the drive. Look for consistent maintenance documentation and investigate known model-specific issues. For the 986 Boxster, specifically ask about IMS-bearing-related maintenance records.
  • Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the car’s mechanical condition and identify urgent maintenance or repair needs. A scan tool can help surface diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot establish that a car is sound or replace an inspection.
  • Price the ownership, not just the purchase. Consider parts availability, repair complexity, maintenance needs and whether you can absorb an unexpected repair.
  • Match the car to the job. Passenger space, cargo capacity, weather use and daily-driving needs differ substantially between a roadster, hatchback, sedan and older sports car.

Don’t confuse a low price with a safety recommendation

An enthusiast-car list is not a safety ranking. IIHS’s used-vehicle recommendations use screening criteria and include dated median retail prices for the vehicles in its tables, but those recommendations are not a direct performance-car comparison. Assess safety for the exact model year and vehicle you are considering; do not infer that a car’s presence on an enthusiast list makes it a safe choice for every driver or use.

Likewise, general under-$10,000 rankings can answer a different question from “what is fun to drive?” iSeeCars says its 2026 ratings combine reliability, resale value and safety, drawing on more than 12 million new and used vehicles in its research. Those criteria offer another buyer lens, not a measure of driving enjoyment. See iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$10,000 rankings and methodology.

A sensible way to shop the list

  1. Pick the driving format first: roadster, hot hatch, all-wheel-drive sedan, rear-drive coupe or older sports car.
  2. Search locally by generation and condition: the broad model name alone cannot tell you whether a specific listing fits the budget.
  3. Shortlist documented cars: ask for service records and investigate known issues before arranging a viewing.
  4. Inspect before committing: use an independent pre-purchase inspection, then make your offer with the findings and likely maintenance in view.
  5. Walk away if the numbers do not work: a car that consumes the entire budget before needed repairs is not a bargain for your situation.
