The Suzuki Cappuccino is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive kei roadster introduced in 1991, best known for its turbocharged three-cylinder engine and removable roof that can be configured four ways. Before buying one, identify whether it is an early EA11R or a 1995-on EA21R, confirm its transmission and specifications, and assess the condition of the individual car: historical catalogue figures cannot tell you whether a decades-old example is sound.
What is the Suzuki Cappuccino?
Suzuki’s archive describes the Cappuccino as a “two-seat kei open sports car.” It pairs compact dimensions with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The model joined the early-1990s Japanese kei sports-car moment alongside the Honda Beat and Autozam AZ-1, a group Toyota GAZOO calls the “ABC trio.”
Its appeal comes from that combination rather than any one headline number: a small two-seat body, rear-wheel drive, turbo power and a roof that can move between enclosed and open configurations. These are design characteristics, not a guarantee of how a particular used car drives or fits its owner.
How does the Cappuccino roof work?
The removable roof consists of three panels. Depending on how they are arranged, the car can be used as a hardtop, T-bar, targa or fully open. Suzuki described this four-mode arrangement as a first for a mass-production car. For a prospective buyer, the system is a central part of the car’s character and worth checking on the actual vehicle: make sure the panels are present, fit as intended and can be stored as the car’s documentation describes.

EA11R vs. EA21R: what changed in 1995?
The 1995 update brought a different engine and, for the first time, an automatic transmission option. The figures below are published catalogue specifications, not independent performance-test results. Representative weights can vary by grade and specification.
| Specification | EA11R (early) | EA21R (1995 update) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 657 cc F6A three-cylinder DOHC turbo | 658 cc all-aluminum K6A three-cylinder DOHC turbo |
| Published output | 64 PS at 6,500 rpm | 64 PS at 6,500 rpm |
| Published maximum torque | 8.7 kgf·m at 4,000 rpm | 10.5 kgf·m at 3,500 rpm |
| Transmission listed | Five-speed manual | Five-speed manual or three-speed automatic |
| Representative weight | 700 kg | 690 kg for a representative manual listing |
Suzuki’s representative EA11R dimensions are 3,295 mm long, 1,395 mm wide and 1,185 mm high, with a 2,060 mm wheelbase. Toyota GAZOO lists a representative later manual version at 690 kg, compared with Suzuki’s 700 kg EA11R figure. Check the year and grade of the specific car rather than assuming one published figure applies to every Cappuccino.
The updated engine’s maximum-torque figure is higher and arrives at a lower engine speed in the published specifications. That describes the catalogue numbers; it does not establish a real-world acceleration comparison between two used cars. Published fuel-economy figures vary by year and test cycle and should not be treated as a prediction of present-day consumption.

What should I know before buying a Suzuki Cappuccino?
Identify the exact version
Start with the chassis code and engine: EA11R denotes the earlier F6A version, while EA21R is the 1995 update with the K6A. Confirm whether the car is manual or automatic and compare its documents and identifying information with the seller’s description. Specifications can vary by year and grade.
Judge the car, not the catalogue
The Cappuccino’s production ended decades ago, so the condition and history of the individual example matter more than its original specification sheet. Review maintenance records, documentation of repairs and modifications, and the completeness and operation of the roof panels. Arrange an inspection by a mechanic familiar with older Japanese kei cars. No single historical specification can establish the condition of a particular car.
Check parts fitment by chassis code
For replacement or upgrade parts, search by EA11R or EA21R and confirm compatibility with the seller before ordering. Monster Sport has a specialist catalogue covering both chassis, but a catalogue listing does not establish current stock or confirm that a particular part is available or suitable for a specific car. Do not assume a part listed for one generation fits the other.

How many Cappuccinos were made, and when was it sold?
Toyota GAZOO lists Japanese sales from November 1991 through October 1998 and says production ended in 1998. Its 2024 retrospective reports more than 26,000 units and also describes the total as fewer than 30,000; “roughly 26,000-plus” is a fair summary, not an exact global production total.
What made the design distinctive?
Beyond the roof and rear-wheel-drive layout, Suzuki’s archive highlights aluminum use in the rear pillars and hood to reduce weight, ventilated front brakes, four-wheel disc brakes and four-wheel double-wishbone suspension. Toyota GAZOO contributor Toshifumi Watanabe, writing retrospectively, recalled the quick steering ratio and precise-feeling shift as details that appealed to enthusiasts. That is a personal recollection, not an independent comparative test.
These period design choices help explain the car’s enthusiast following, but they do not prove that every surviving example is easy to maintain, inexpensive to own or in good condition. Those questions depend on the vehicle and the parts and service available where it is being maintained.
