These Mainstream ’90s Models Are Worth Revisiting Today

AOL’s ten-model shortlist spans sedans, wagons, pickups and SUVs. Here’s what each generation offers and why condition and configuration matter more than reputation.

If you’re asking, “What about the mainstream models?”—the March 2026 AOL shortlist names ten familiar 1990s-era vehicles across sedans, wagons, SUVs and pickups. They are worth revisiting as candidates, not treating as automatic buys: the list is an editorial selection, and the condition, maintenance history and exact configuration of any surviving example matter more than its reputation. AOL’s original feature includes generations that began before 1990 or continued after 1999, so “’90s” here means a generation that overlaps the decade.

How to use this shortlist

These models cover very different jobs. A Camry is a practical sedan; an Outback is a wagon; the Ranger and Tacoma are compact pickups; and the Suburban is a full-size, three-row SUV. Cherokee, Bronco, RAV4 and 4Runner buyers may also be looking for different combinations of road use and off-pavement capability. Compare vehicles by intended use, passenger and cargo needs, drivetrain, configuration, condition, local parts support and total ownership cost—not by a single model’s reputation.

The source feature is a historical editorial shortlist, not a standardized comparison test or a guarantee that every example is reliable, safe, inexpensive or suitable today. Its price observations reflect what AOL reported in March 2026; they are not current October 2026 market quotes. The broad year ranges below describe generations, not a claim that every year or configuration is interchangeable.

The ten mainstream models, by generation start

Jeep Cherokee (1984–2001): a generation that spans the decade

AOL’s pick is the second-generation Cherokee, commonly known as the XJ. The feature favors the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter inline-six and points to a five-speed manual with four-wheel drive as a desirable off-road combination. Because this generation began in 1984 and ran through 2001, it is a ’90s-era choice by overlap, not a vehicle introduced in the 1990s. Check the individual vehicle’s drivetrain, service records and condition rather than assuming that every XJ has the preferred setup.

  • Compact Size: Measuring approximately 3 inches long, this die-cast model is perfect for display or play.

Ford Bronco (1992–1996): removable roof and utility

The fifth-generation Bronco offers inline-six and V8 choices, with a removable rear hardtop. AOL also highlights more comfort-oriented equipment on versions such as Eddie Bauer. Its reported price observation—about $22,000, based on asking prices and auction results over the preceding year—belongs to the March 2026 article and is not a current valuation. Body condition, equipment and configuration can make individual examples difficult to compare.

Toyota Camry (1992–1996): the practical sedan option

The third-generation Camry is the list’s straightforward daily-driver candidate. AOL discusses four-cylinder and V6 versions and makes claims about their reliability, but those comments are editorial judgments, not findings from a reliability dataset reviewed for this article. The feature noted that some later third-generation examples were listed under $5,000; that was a dated observation, not a price guide for today or every market. Verify the exact model year, engine and maintenance history.

Chevrolet Suburban (1992–1999): full-size, three-row space

The eighth-generation Suburban, built on the GMT400 platform, is the choice for shoppers who need substantial passenger and cargo capacity. AOL notes a 7.4-liter gasoline V8 option. Its size and capability should be weighed against where it will be driven and the costs of operating and maintaining a full-size vehicle; those trade-offs are different from those of a compact sedan or crossover.

Ford Ranger (1993–1997): compact-pickup utility

The second-generation Ranger is presented as a small-truck option, with the 4.0-liter V6 and four-wheel-drive examples among the configurations AOL calls out. The feature gives the V6 a rating of 160 horsepower, but that figure should be checked against the exact year and configuration before being used to assess a particular truck. Decide whether the vehicle’s cab, bed and drivetrain suit the work or everyday use you have in mind.

Subaru Legacy Outback (1994–1999): wagon practicality

The first-generation Outback was then called the Legacy Outback. AOL describes a wagon with standard all-wheel drive and suggests it as a less expensive alternative. That price characterization is not universal: local supply, condition and equipment vary, and the article’s observation should not be treated as a current market estimate. Inspect the specific car and confirm its history and configuration.

Nissan Maxima (1995–1999): V6 sedan with a manual option

The fourth-generation Maxima pairs a 3.0-liter VQ30DE V6 with an available five-speed manual, according to the AOL feature. The article also connects the engine with later Ward’s 10 Best Engines recognition; that historical link is presented here as the feature’s account, not as an independently verified engine-award record. For a used example, focus on its actual maintenance and condition.

  • THE PERFECT PRESENT: Don't know what to get dad for his birthday? Or maybe you have an avid hobbyist or collector in your life. This model kit makes an ideal gift for any occasion!

Toyota Tacoma (1995–2004): compact truck beyond the decade

The first-generation Tacoma’s model years extend through 2004, so only part of its run falls in the 1990s. AOL discusses 2.7-liter four-cylinder and 3.4-liter V6 versions as possible work trucks, off-road vehicles or daily drivers. Identify the engine, drivetrain and other equipment on the individual truck before comparing it with another Tacoma or a Ranger.

Toyota RAV4 (1996–2000): an early compact crossover

The first-generation RAV4 came in two- and four-door forms, with front- or four-wheel drive, as described by AOL. It belongs to the emerging class of small, car-based SUVs. MotorTrend’s 2024 retrospective says Toyota sold 56,000 RAV4s in calendar year 1996 and another 190,000 before the decade ended; those are historical sales figures, not measures of the condition or value of today’s surviving examples. MotorTrend’s RAV4 retrospective provides that broader context.

Toyota 4Runner (1996–2002): body-on-frame SUV

The third-generation 4Runner’s run continues through 2002. AOL’s author favors its body-on-frame construction and describes rear- or four-wheel-drive versions, aftermarket support and Toyota replacement parts as appealing to owners. These are useful leads for a prospective buyer, not a substitute for checking parts availability for the exact year and configuration or inspecting an individual SUV.

What to check before choosing one

  • Fit the vehicle to the job: Match sedan, wagon, pickup or SUV to the passengers, cargo and terrain you actually need to handle.
  • Confirm the configuration: Check the model year, engine, transmission and drivetrain from the vehicle’s records and equipment; generation names alone do not tell you what is fitted.
  • Assess the individual example: Review service records and condition, and pay particular attention to rust. A model’s reputation cannot establish the history of a specific vehicle.
  • Check support locally: Find out whether replacement parts, knowledgeable service and any desired modifications are available for that year and configuration where you live.
  • Budget for ownership, not just purchase: Consider likely maintenance and operating costs alongside the asking price. AOL’s March 2026 price mentions are historical observations, not current quotes.

Why ’90s-era cars still matter—and what that does not prove

SEMA’s 2021 report said more than 86 million traditional cars were in operation in the United States, using vehicle data as of December 31, 2020. The same report cited a $2.53 billion small-car accessory market figure from 2019 U.S. market data and a $7.10 billion figure for mid-range and large-car accessories from that data. These are historical U.S. industry figures, not current market estimates or evidence that any one 1990s model is easy to own today. SEMA’s 2021 report gives the original context.

Historical context can explain why a vehicle became influential or popular, but it cannot tell you whether a surviving example is sound, safe or a good purchase. Honda’s corporate history, for example, describes the Odyssey as a hit in its Creative Mover series, while MotorTrend’s retrospective places the RAV4 among the small, car-based vehicles in the rising SUV category. Neither history is an inspection of a used car. Honda’s corporate history
