The CX-5 is the practical winner on Mazda’s published cargo figures, both with the rear seats in use and with them folded. Families carrying strollers, luggage, sports equipment or bulky grocery loads should start with the CX-5. Its taller shape also supports a more upright cabin layout.
The CX-50 still offers useful family space, and its longer footprint can help with certain long items, but its listed total volume is smaller. Compare the actual opening, floor height and child-seat fit at a dealer if rear-facing seats or tall cargo are central to your decision.

2026 CX-50: turbo performance or hybrid efficiency

Always match the trailer, tongue weight, passengers and cargo to the rating for the exact trim, and use the required equipment. A maximum figure is not a recommendation to tow that load in every condition.
Is the CX-50 Hybrid worth its extra money?
Mazda lists the CX-50 Hybrid at a $34,750 starting MSRP, while the standard CX-50 starts at $29,900 and the CX-5 at $29,990. That makes the hybrid’s premium a significant purchase decision rather than a small trim upgrade. Its justification is the 38-mpg combined rating and hybrid power delivery, not additional towing capacity.
It is most compelling for drivers with high annual mileage, frequent stop-and-go commuting or a long ownership horizon. Drivers who cover fewer miles, tow regularly or primarily want the lowest entry price may find a gasoline CX-50 or CX-5 easier to justify. Fuel prices, financing, insurance and local incentives will determine the actual payback, so calculate those costs for your driving pattern instead of assuming the EPA difference automatically covers the price gap.
