The world’s longest road tunnel is Norway’s Lærdal Tunnel, a 24,509-metre route on the E16 between Aurland and Lærdal. It is not abandoned or unused: the Norwegian Public Roads Administration reports average daily traffic of approximately 2,100 vehicles, including a 26% heavy-vehicle share. That figure confirms regular use, but without a comparable benchmark it does not establish that traffic is “minimal.”
Where is the world’s longest road tunnel?
Lærdal Tunnel (Lærdalstunnelen) runs through mountainous Vestland in western Norway, connecting the municipalities of Aurland and Lærdal on the E16. The setting can reasonably be described as remote in a geographic sense, but the tunnel is part of a major road corridor, not an isolated dead-end route.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) identifies it as the world’s longest road tunnel. Its length is 24,509 metres, or about 24.5 kilometres. Is it really used only minimally?
Not in the sense of being closed, disused or carrying only occasional traffic. NPRA reports approximately 2,100 vehicles per day on average, with heavy vehicles accounting for 26%. The agency does not attach a measurement year to those figures on its project page.

Whether that is “minimal” depends on what it is compared with. The available traffic figure alone does not show how Lærdal compares with similar tunnels or roads, so the label is not supported as a relative claim. Why was the tunnel built?
Before the tunnel opened, this section of the E16 lacked a ferry-free road connection. Lærdal Tunnel completed a major link on the route between Oslo and Bergen, providing a direct passage through the mountains. It opened in November 2000. NPRA: E16 Lærdal Tunnel

What is the drive through Lærdal Tunnel like?
The tunnel’s background page describes the drive as taking about 20 minutes; actual travel time varies with conditions and traffic. Three large illuminated caverns break up the long underground stretch and offer places to stop. NPRA’s project information schedules a major safety upgrade from autumn 2026 through 2030/31. The plans describe nighttime closures during construction, with bus passage planned at specified times and separate arrangements for emergency and medical vehicles.
