The most unusual cars reported in connection with the Sultan of Brunei’s collection are not simply high-priced supercars: they include a Bentley SUV based on a Range Rover, a rare Bentley two-door, Ferrari 456 GT-based sedans and a wagon, and an AMG-powered Mercedes-Benz wagon. The photographs behind the recent coverage date to around 2001, so they offer a historical glimpse—not a verified inventory of what the royal family owns today.
What the leaked photos do—and don’t—show
The Drive published photographs in November 2024 that it says were taken around 2001. Its report identifies unusual vehicles associated with the Sultan of Brunei’s collection, but the images do not establish who holds title to any car now, where it is, whether it still runs, or whether every identification and build detail is independently verified. The Drive’s account is best read as reporting on distinctive cars linked to the collection, not as a current registry.
“The Sultan’s collection” is convenient shorthand, not proof that the Sultan personally ordered, titled, or continues to own every vehicle discussed. The official Brunei publication identifies His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah as Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam; it does not establish vehicle provenance. The Ministry of Health publication verifies his identity and office, not the cars.
The most unusual reported models
These cars are more meaningfully compared by how radically their bodies or configurations depart from familiar production models than by performance figures, which the cited reporting does not establish consistently.

Bentley Dominator: a Range Rover-based luxury SUV
The Dominator stands out because it anticipated the high-end SUV as a bespoke luxury object rather than a standard model in Bentley’s range. According to The Drive, it was developed specifically for the Sultan in the 1990s and used a P38-generation Range Rover as its basis. The report puts the number built at six, but qualifies the count as reported and notes that details are limited.
Bentley Monte Carlo: an unconventional two-door
The 1995 Monte Carlo is another reported Bentley commission that breaks from the marque’s familiar shapes of its era. The Drive describes it as a two-door with Continental R underpinnings and says six were allegedly made, including at least two convertibles. Those figures are not confirmed production records.

Aston Martin AM3: a distinctive front end
The AM3’s most immediately recognizable feature, as described by The Drive, is a black composite front panel that integrates the headlights and an air intake. The report says the car was commissioned for the Sultan and was reportedly designed by Pininfarina and built by Turin-based Carrozzeria Coggiola. Those design and construction attributions should be treated as reported details, not factory-series specifications.
Ferrari 456 GT-based sedan and wagon: a grand tourer reworked
The Ferrari 456 GT is known as a grand tourer, but The Drive reports that Pininfarina developed sedan versions with Ferrari’s blessing and identifies a wagon variant as well. Its account says at least eight sedan examples were reported. These custom-bodied cars are not evidence that Ferrari sold a regular-production 456 sedan or wagon.

Mercedes-Benz 600SEL AMG wagon: a full-size estate with a V12
The Drive identifies this car as a W140-generation S-Class converted to wagon form and fitted with a 7.3-liter V12 by AMG. It says the engine was built specifically for Brunei’s royal family and notes examples in more than one body color. The reported configuration makes it unusual, but the article does not provide a verified chassis-by-chassis history or current status.

Guinness World Records’ entry for the largest private Rolls-Royce fleet identifies a figure of 500 for Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in 2011. The accompanying wording says he was “believed to have” around 500 Rolls-Royces; it is a dated estimate, not a confirmed present-day count. Guinness also says the Sultan’s family accounted for almost half of all Rolls-Royce purchases during the 1990s, but its entry provides no calculation or narrower sales basis for that statement. The Guinness World Records entry is the source for both claims.

That same 2011 Guinness entry lists other notable vehicles associated with the collection, including Porsche Carrera GT, Lamborghini Diablo Jota, Porsche 959, Bugatti EB110, Lamborghini Murciélago LP640, Maybach 62, Jaguar XJR-15, Ferrari FX, Ferrari Mythos, Ferrari 456 GT sedans, a right-hand-drive Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, McLaren F1s, and Cizeta-Moroder V16Ts.
