But if awkward proportions, a sharp departure from familiar Lamborghini styling, or a design that feels distinctly of its era count against a car, the Bertone Athon, the Sogna Countach, Chrysler’s Portofino and the Zagato Raptor make a compelling shortlist. Their strangeness is part of the point: several came from outside designers or unusual collaborations, not simply Lamborghini’s in-house studio.
How to judge a Lamborghini concept’s looks
“Ugly” is a matter of taste, not a measured design category. This selection weighs three things: whether a car’s proportions feel awkward, how far its styling strays from the angular, aggressive cues many people associate with Lamborghini, and whether its appearance now feels dated. The choices are editorial judgments, not a formal poll or a design-industry consensus.
The distinction matters because Lamborghini concepts have involved outside design houses and collaborators. A car described as a Lamborghini concept was not necessarily styled wholly in-house.
Four Lamborghini concepts that divide opinion
Bertone Athon
The Athon appears in Lamborghini concept histories as a Bertone design. Its geometric volumes and unusual overall shape make it an easy candidate for a list of the brand’s least conventional concepts. To my eye, the forms compete rather than resolve into the coherent, low-slung drama many readers expect from a Lamborghini.

That is a reaction to its appearance, not evidence of a universal verdict. The available coverage criticizes the look, but no named critic or broader consensus establishes it as the ugliest.
Sogna Countach
The Sogna is a 1991 Countach rebody attributed to Ryoji Yamazaki in secondary coverage. Rather than being a clean-sheet factory concept, it takes the familiar Countach as its basis and replaces its body. That makes it an especially striking clash: the recognizable source car is filtered through a radically different interpretation.

- Opening parts, Rolling Wheels
- Easy assembly, Pre-painted metal body
- When finished the vehicles are fully functional
- Rolling die-cast replica
For readers who prefer the Countach’s sharp, tightly controlled wedge, the Sogna’s unfamiliar body can feel like an awkward fit. Others may see the same departure as the reason it is memorable. Its appearance is subjective; its description here follows the cited secondary account.
Chrysler-era Portofino
The Portofino grew out of Kevin Verduyn’s work at Chrysler, according to Top Gear’s overview of Lamborghini concepts. Its cab-forward approach gives it a different visual balance from the mid-engined, wedge-shaped supercars many readers use as their reference point.

That context helps explain why it can feel out of place in a Lamborghini lineup. It is not best understood as a conventional Centro Stile design that simply missed the mark; its unusual proportions reflect a concept shaped by a different design context.
Zagato Raptor
The 1996 Raptor was a one-off concept by Zagato, connected with Alain Wicki, and was considered in relation to the anticipated Canto. RM Sotheby’s catalogue entry documents that coachbuilder context.

Its proportions and distinctive Zagato treatment make it a plausible choice for readers who find the Raptor more curious than beautiful. That is an aesthetic reading of the car, not a documented consensus. Its significance here is also a reminder that a Lamborghini concept can be a collaborator’s interpretation rather than an in-house styling exercise.

Italdesign Cala
The Cala is identified in concept indexes as an Italdesign-styled Lamborghini. It is useful as a comparison because it shows another outside studio interpreting the marque. The material available does not establish a particular critical consensus about its appearance, so it belongs here as context rather than as a firm “ugliest” pick.

Asterion LPI 910-4
The Asterion offers a different kind of departure: secondary coverage describes its shape as softer and more grand-touring oriented than the angular aggression associated with many Lamborghini supercars. For readers who want a sharp-edged wedge, that rounder approach may seem out of character. But an unexpected direction is not the same thing as an ugly design, and the available sources do not establish the Asterion as widely regarded that way.
Which one deserves the “ugliest” label?
There is no sourced universal winner. The Athon is the strongest pick if geometric forms feel unresolved to you; the Sogna if you dislike an extreme reworking of a familiar Countach; the Portofino if its cab-forward proportions feel wrong for the marque; and the Raptor if its coachbuilt interpretation does not work for your taste. The best answer depends on which Lamborghini design cues you value—and whether you see a concept’s oddness as a flaw or as the reason to look twice.
