In 1966, Miles and co-driver Denny Hulme finished second in the official 24 Hours of Le Mans classification, behind fellow Ford drivers Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. The race’s staged close finish became controversial, and the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari dramatizes the people and events around it.
Who was Ken Miles?
Ken Miles was an English-born racing driver and mechanical development specialist. He became a key figure in Ford’s GT40 program, working with Carroll Shelby and Shelby American as Ford set out to beat Ferrari in endurance racing. Ford’s account credits Miles with substantial work preparing the GT40 Mark II for the 1966 Le Mans race (Ford Motor Company).

Miles was not simply a driver hired to race a finished car: his experience as a mechanic and his feedback behind the wheel made him valuable to the development effort. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), which organizes Le Mans, also places him among the central figures in Ford’s program (ACO).
How did Miles reach the 1966 Le Mans race?
His results that season established him as one of Ford’s leading drivers. Miles and Lloyd Ruby won the 1966 Daytona 24 Hours, then took victory together at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Those wins preceded the most famous and disputed result of Miles’s career (The Henry Ford).

At Le Mans, Miles shared a Ford GT40 Mark II with Denny Hulme. Several Ford cars were in contention, and Miles and Hulme’s car was leading late in the race. Ford wanted its cars to cross together, creating a symbolic team result and a memorable image. Miles slowed so the McLaren-and-Amon car could catch up.
Did Ken Miles win Le Mans in 1966?
No—not in the official classification. Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon were recorded as the winners; Miles and Hulme were second, with another Ford third. The ACO and Ford both describe the close finish and the result, though their accounts reflect different institutional perspectives (ACO; Ford Motor Company).
Rank #2
The key detail is that the cars did not start from the same position. McLaren and Amon had started farther back, so when the officials considered the distance covered, their car had the advantage. That is why a finish staged to look like a dead heat did not produce an official tie: McLaren and Amon were classified first.
The outcome has long prompted debate about fairness and whether Miles was denied a victory. It is accurate to say he was leading and that Ford’s plan to bring its cars together shaped the finish. It is not accurate to state as fact that he officially won or that the race recorded a dead heat. The official result and the continuing dispute are both part of the story.

What happened to Ken Miles after Le Mans?
Miles returned to Ford development work after the race. Later in 1966, he died while testing an experimental Ford J-car at Riverside. The available historical accounts establish those broad circumstances; they do not, on their own, establish a precise crash mechanism or technical cause (The Henry Ford).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How accurate is Ford v Ferrari?
The 2019 film, released as Le Mans ’66 in some markets, is based on real people and events: Ford’s effort to beat Ferrari, Shelby’s role, Miles’s contribution, and the 1966 race. The ACO has connected the film with the historical duel and its participants (ACO).
But it is a dramatization, not a scene-by-scene documentary. The race result and the broad outlines of the Ford program are supported by historical accounts; dialogue, interpersonal confrontations, and compressed timing in the film should be treated as storytelling unless independently documented. The film’s dramatic treatment of the finish does not change the official classification: McLaren and Amon first, Miles and Hulme second.
