A useful shortlist of Toyota Camry model years to consider for reliability is 1995, 2001, 2006, 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2020. It is a shortlist, not a definitive ranking: a model-year reputation cannot tell you whether an individual used car was maintained well, has hidden damage, or needs repairs.
Which Toyota Camry years are considered reliable?
Autoblog’s comparison identifies these years based on below-average complaint and recall counts, alongside J.D. Power quality and reliability scores above 80 where scores were available. The article says its comparison draws on CarComplaints, J.D. Power, and NHTSA information; it is a secondary synthesis, not a direct analysis of all the underlying vehicle records. Read the years as candidates to investigate, not proof that every car from them is trouble-free.

Autoblog’s Toyota Camry reliability comparison is the source for this year-level shortlist. The years are not presented there as a ranked order, so there is no evidence here that one is the single best Camry year.
Which Camry years deserve extra caution?
Autoblog flags the 2007–2011 generation as the most problematic in its comparison. It especially associates excessive oil-consumption complaints with 2007–2008 four-cylinder Camrys using the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine. The article says the V6 is not affected by this particular issue. That is a reported problem tied to a particular engine and set of model years—not evidence that every 2007 or 2008 Camry has it.

If you are considering one of these four-cylinder cars, ask about oil use and maintenance history, review available service records, and have the vehicle assessed before purchase. A model-year label alone cannot establish whether a specific engine has the problem.
How should you interpret newer Camry reliability ratings?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability article says the Camry’s reliability score rose from 56 in the prior survey to 74 in the current survey, following the redesign for model year 2025. These are survey scores, not percentages or probabilities that a car will fail. Consumer Reports describes its reliability findings as based on owner reports and says its reliability history charts cover approximately 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble areas. The figures are survey-wide context, not a guarantee for any particular Camry.

Because the 2025 Camry is a redesign, its survey rating should not be treated as a mature long-term record for that generation. The comparison’s established used-car shortlist stops at 2020; it does not support a long-term verdict on 2021-and-newer Camrys.

What to check before buying a used Camry
Use the shortlist to narrow your search, then evaluate the exact vehicle. These checks address different questions: model-level complaint patterns do not tell you a car’s individual condition, while a clean inspection does not erase an unresolved recall.
- Confirm the year and engine. For 2007–2008 examples, establish whether the car has the four-cylinder 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine or the V6 before applying the oil-consumption caveat.
- Review maintenance and condition. Ask for service records and have a qualified mechanic inspect the specific car. The year-level comparison does not supply a complete inspection rubric or establish an individual car’s history.
- Check recalls by VIN. Recall status is specific to the vehicle, so use an official lookup tool before purchase and confirm that any required remedy has been completed.
Recent Camry recall: check the vehicle, not just the model year
On August 11, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Toyota recalled about 655,000 Camrys globally, including more than 508,000 U.S. 2025–2026 Camry Hybrids. The reported issue was a display that could go blank at startup, disabling safety indicators; the remedy reported by AP was a free dealer software update. These reported figures and scope concern that recall, not all Camrys or all vehicles from those model years.

Before buying a recent Camry, check its VIN through an official recall lookup and ask a Toyota dealer whether any open recall has been addressed. The Associated Press report on the August 2026 recall provides the reported details; recall information can change, so verify the specific car’s status rather than relying on an article alone.
