The Toyota 4Runner began in 1984 as a two-seat, removable-top vehicle derived from the Hilux pickup. Over six generations, it became a more practical passenger SUV while keeping a truck-based foundation and an off-road identity. Its story runs from the 1981 Trekker that inspired it to the sixth-generation 2025 U.S. model, which brings back selected design cues alongside newer platform and powertrain technology.
How the 4Runner began: the Trekker and the first generation
Toyota traces the idea to a 1981 partnership with Winnebago Industries. The result was the Trekker, a Toyota Hilux fitted with a camper shell for people seeking an affordable vehicle for off-road family activities. Toyota says the 4Runner followed in 1984, drawing on both the Land Cruiser and Trekker. Toyota’s 2022 retrospective and its history of the first two generations describe the early vehicle as pickup-like: it had two front seats, no rear seating, and a removable fiberglass top over the cargo area.
The first generation ran from 1984 through 1989. Toyota says updates brought more ground clearance, a revised ride with Hi-Trac independent front suspension, exterior changes, and an available turbocharged engine on SR5 models. The core trade-off was clear: the enclosed pickup shape offered utility, but passengers in the rear had no seats.
How the 4Runner became a passenger SUV
The second generation, covering 1990–1995, made the decisive change from pickup-derived enclosure to an integrated passenger vehicle. Toyota describes a single-body design replacing the removable top, the addition of rear doors and three more seats, and greater interior comfort. That shift widened the 4Runner’s role: it remained an off-road-oriented vehicle, but could now carry a family in a conventional SUV layout.

Safety, traction, and changing equipment
Toyota’s 40-year retrospective describes the 4Runner’s development as more than a sequence of body changes. It says the vehicle gained side-impact protection, a third brake light, and anti-lock brakes through 2000, alongside changes to design, chassis, and engines. Toyota’s account of a 2001-model update lists automatic transmissions, Vehicle Skid Control with traction control, and multi-mode four-wheel drive. It says an all-aluminum engine arrived the following year, with Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential, Hill-Start Assist Control, and Downhill Assist Control following in 2003. These milestones are Toyota’s historical account, not a claim that every item appeared on every trim or market version.
Those changes show how the 4Runner’s identity broadened: passenger space and comfort mattered alongside four-wheel-drive and traction features, while safety and cabin technology became part of the vehicle’s evolution. Toyota’s brief summaries do not establish that one generation is universally the most capable, safest, or most dependable.

Racing associations and Toyota’s sales claims
Toyota recounts that a 4Runner entered the 2009 Baja 1000 and finished second in class, eight minutes behind the winner and more than half an hour ahead of third place. This result is reported in Toyota’s retrospective; it is not independently corroborated here. The same account discusses “pre-runners,” comfortable modified trucks used to scout desert-race routes, but that context alone does not prove a definitive origin for the 4Runner’s name.
Toyota has published two different cumulative-sales statements. Its May 24, 2022 retrospective says the 4Runner had reached 4 million sales in countries around the world. In its April 9, 2024 launch announcement, Toyota executive Dave Christ said more than 3 million had been sold in the 40 years the model had been on sale. The figures are retained as Toyota stated them, with their separate dates and wording; the available statements do not explain the difference.

What changed with the sixth-generation 2025 U.S. 4Runner
Toyota announced the sixth generation on April 9, 2024, saying it would reach the United States at the end of that year. In the release updated June 27, 2024, Toyota described a truck-based TNGA-F platform with a high-strength boxed steel ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension, and multi-link coil rear suspension. The announcement’s specifications refer to the 2025 U.S. lineup, not every year or market.
- Standard engine: Toyota announced a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder i-FORCE rated at 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic.
- Available hybrid: Toyota announced the i-FORCE MAX hybrid setup at up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.
- Heritage details: Toyota highlighted the return of the roll-down rear window and “wrap over” quarter glass.
- Trail-focused grade: Toyota described Trailhunter as a factory overlanding-oriented model developed with suppliers including ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID Industries.
- Announced lineup and safety: Toyota described nine grades and standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 for the 2025 U.S. lineup. This is announcement-time information; equipment and availability can change in later model years.
CALTY president Kevin Hunter described the design as “Inspired by Baja desert racing, the high lift, lean body, big tire, rugged athleticism defines the core of 4Runner’s go anywhere purpose”. That is Toyota’s design commentary, not a neutral measure of off-road capability. The return of familiar details connects the 2025 vehicle to earlier 4Runners, while its platform, suspension, and powertrain choices reflect a modern truck-based SUV.

What the 4Runner’s history adds up to
The clearest through-line is adaptation. The 1984 model carried the utility of a Hilux-based vehicle but offered only two seats; the second generation made it a more complete passenger SUV. Later generations layered in safety, traction, comfort, and technology changes, while Toyota’s fifth-generation summary says the model retained body-on-frame construction. The sixth-generation U.S. model carries that truck-platform approach forward and revives particular heritage cues. That history explains the 4Runner’s enduring off-road identity without proving that every generation has equal capability, reliability, or suitability for a particular buyer.
