There is no evidence-based single “best” Lexus GX model year across the GX 470 and GX 460 generations. Available J.D. Power results offer useful brand-level context and a few model-specific ratings or awards, but not a comparable year-by-year GX reliability ranking. For a used GX, treat the years below as candidates—not a proven reliability order—and give more weight to the individual vehicle’s maintenance records, condition and VIN-specific recall status.
Which Lexus GX years are strongest candidates?
The defensible shortlist is not a ranked list of winners. J.D. Power’s published material does not provide a consistent, year-by-year reliability comparison covering the GX 470 and GX 460. Its brand rankings, model awards and individual model-page score measure different things and cannot establish that one GX year has fewer problems than another.
2021–2023 GX 460: compare the vehicle, not the year
J.D. Power describes the 2021, 2022 and 2023 GX 460s as virtually identical mechanically and in features. That makes them a sensible group to shop together, but it does not prove equal reliability or identify a winner. Compare specific listings by mileage, documented service, condition, trim and equipment, and price instead of assuming the newest year is the safest bet. J.D. Power’s 2022 GX review
GX 470 and earlier GX 460 years
The available evidence does not support naming a particular GX 470 year—or an earlier GX 460 year—as the most reliable. A model’s reputation or a broad brand ranking cannot substitute for a comparable model-year record. For any older candidate, assess its maintenance documentation and present condition directly, and check open recalls by VIN.

What the reliability evidence actually shows
These results provide context, not a GX year ranking:
| Evidence | What it says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study | Lexus ranked highest among premium brands for a fourth consecutive year, with 151 problems per 100 vehicles. Lexus GX was among the model-level award recipients. | The 151 figure is brand-level, not a GX-specific rate; an award does not rank GX model years. J.D. Power’s 2026 study announcement |
| J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study | Lexus ranked highest overall, with 81 problems per 100 vehicles, and GX received a segment award. The study covered original owners of 2018 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. | This is a study result for its defined survey population, not a head-to-head comparison of GX years. J.D. Power’s 2021 study announcement |
| J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, as reported by Lexus USA | The survey included 30,595 respondents who were original purchasers or lessees of new 2021 model-year vehicles. It was conducted August–November 2023; Lexus GX was not among the model-level awards listed in Lexus’s release. | The release does not supply a GX model-year reliability ranking. Lexus USA’s 2024 release |
| J.D. Power 2020 GX model page | The page displays an 87/100 Quality & Reliability score, based on verified owner data, and says it used prior-year ratings and review data. | This is a model-page snapshot, not an apples-to-apples multi-year ranking or a probability that a vehicle will fail. J.D. Power’s 2020 GX page |
In particular, a J.D. Power “problems per 100 vehicles” figure is not a count of GX failures, and the 87/100 score should not be read as an objective failure probability. None of these figures identifies a definitive best used GX year.
How to compare two used GX listings
Use these as inspection and shopping criteria, not as a statistical scoring formula; the available evidence does not quantify how much each factor predicts future failures.
- Generation and powertrain: Establish whether the vehicle is a GX 470 or GX 460, then compare it with vehicles of the same generation rather than inferring reliability from the nameplate alone.
- Maintenance records: Ask for dated service documentation and evidence of scheduled maintenance. A seller’s verbal assurance is not the same as records.
- Mileage and present condition: Have the vehicle inspected, with attention to its current mechanical condition. Mileage alone does not describe how it was maintained or how it drives today.
- Recall and campaign status: Search the vehicle’s VIN and confirm completed remedies with Lexus or a dealer. A model-year list cannot show whether a particular vehicle’s repair is complete.
- Trim and equipment: Compare the actual equipment and its maintenance implications; do not assume every example in a model year is configured alike.
- Price relative to condition: Judge the asking price against the specific vehicle’s records, condition and equipment, not just its model year.
What buyers should know about the 2010 GX 460
The 2010 GX 460 drew a high-profile handling concern. In a May 7, 2010 statement, Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Mark Templin said Consumer Reports had lifted its “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” designation after a Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) update addressed the publication’s prior concern. Lexus said Consumer Reports retested the updated vehicle and did not experience safety concerns in its handling tests. This is Lexus’s account of that action, not a current, independent reliability judgment. Lexus USA’s May 7, 2010 statement

If considering a 2010 GX 460, ask Lexus or a dealer to verify the vehicle’s campaign or recall history and whether applicable work was completed. The historical VSC update and today’s VIN-specific recall status are separate questions.

- Open NHTSA’s recall search and enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) of the GX you are considering.
- Review the results for applicable safety recalls, then ask Lexus or a dealer to confirm whether each remedy has been completed.
- If a recall result or notice is unclear, confirm applicability and remedy status with Lexus using the VIN rather than relying on a model-year list.
NHTSA explains that the date shown with a recall refers to when the safety issue was reported to the agency, while its search date filter is based on when the recall was published. The distinction matters when interpreting search results; neither an aggregate search nor a notice alone verifies the status of a specific vehicle.
An NHTSA-filed Lexus notice describes how time, temperature and humidity can contribute to Takata air-bag inflator propellant degradation and discusses exposure zones. That notice does not mean every GX from a particular year has an open recall: applicability and remedy status depend on the vehicle’s VIN and current records. Lexus’s NHTSA-filed notice
