The Shweeb: A Human-Powered Monorail You Can Ride in Rotorua

The Shweeb is a pedal-powered monorail attraction at Velocity Valley in Rotorua. Its urban-transit proposal received a Google award in 2010, but that is not evidence a public line was built.

The Shweeb is a human-powered monorail: riders pedal recumbent-style pods suspended beneath an overhead track. Today, the documented public experience is Shweeb Racer at Velocity Valley in Rotorua, New Zealand—not an urban transit network. Google awarded funding to develop a mass-transit concept in 2010, but the available reporting does not establish that a city line was built.

What is the Shweeb, and how does it work?

A Shweeb pod hangs below a fixed overhead rail. The rider reclines and pedals to propel it along the track. At Velocity Valley, the system is presented as an attraction where two riders can race on separate pods. That operating ride is distinct from the broader proposal to adapt the concept for urban transport.

The design combines human-powered vehicles with elevated, fixed track infrastructure. The cited sources do not provide a like-for-like performance dataset covering throughput, station access, energy use or safety against other transport systems, so claims that Shweeb is faster, safer, greener or more efficient than alternatives are not established here.

Where can you ride the Shweeb?

Shweeb Racer is offered at Velocity Valley Adventure Park in Rotorua, New Zealand. RotoruaNZ’s 2026 trade itinerary lists the park at 1335 Paradise Valley Road, Rotorua 3040, and describes it as the world’s only Shweeb human-powered monorail racetrack. The operator also describes its track as the only one of its kind worldwide; these are operator and tourism claims, not an independently audited global inventory.

For current booking details, see the Velocity Valley Shweeb Racer page. Its listed fare and conditions can change, so check the page before travelling.

What does Shweeb Racer cost, and who can ride?

Velocity Valley’s booking page lists Shweeb Racer at NZ$65. It specifies a minimum rider height of 1.3 m, a maximum of 2 m, one rider per pod and two pods racing. Booking options are listed on the operator’s page. Confirm the current price, availability and terms directly with Velocity Valley before making plans.

How did the Shweeb transit proposal develop?

The New Zealand Herald reported in 2010 that Geoff Barnett conceived the idea while living in Tokyo and developed it over six years before choosing Rotorua for a test ride. The report said the Rotorua attraction had been operating since 2007.

In September 2010, Google awarded the Shweeb project US$1 million to develop the monorail concept for possible mass transit. The Herald reported that Google would receive a 25% shareholding in return for the grant. This documents funding and an ambition to develop the concept; it does not show that Google built, funded or opened a public transit line.

What do the historical rider and speed figures mean?

The Herald reported in 2010 that more than 30,000 people had ridden the approximately 200 m Rotorua track. It also attributed a top speed of up to 47 km/h in three-lap races to Shweeb managing director Peter Cossey. These are dated figures from that newspaper report, not current counts or independently measured performance results.

Are Shweeb’s safety and efficiency claims proven?

In the 2010 Herald report, Cossey described the project’s commitment to Google as “more people with less energy, greater efficiency and fewer casualties”. That is an attributed aspiration, not evidence of measured energy savings or comparative safety. The cited material does not supply independent safety findings or a comparative study establishing those benefits.
