The Roshel Senator is a Canadian-made family of armored vehicles used by Ukrainian forces since 2022. Its later MRAP configuration was designed for greater protection against mines and other explosive threats, but “refuses to die” is a headline hook, not a proven survival statistic: the available official descriptions do not establish that every Senator can withstand any mine, drone attack, or direct hit.
What is the Roshel Senator?
The Senator is a family of armored vehicles manufactured by Roshel in Brampton, Ontario, according to the Government of Canada’s March 2026 announcement. That establishes where Roshel manufactures the vehicles, not that every component is Canadian-made.
The family includes distinct configurations. Roshel describes its Senator APC as a modular, multi-mission vehicle for personnel transport, mobile command and control, law enforcement, and medical evacuation. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence distinguishes that earlier APC configuration from a later, more protected MRAP variant developed with lessons from Ukrainian use. Specifications for one should not be assumed to apply to the other.
How did the Senator reach Ukraine?
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence says Ukrainian forces have received Canadian-made Senators since 2022. Its account describes the initial vehicles as APC variants based on the Ford F-550, followed later by the enhanced-protection MRAP.

Canadian delivery figures vary by date and reporting scope; they are not a single, current fleet total.
| Record | What it says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| May 2022 | Canada’s aid tracker records eight Roshel armored vehicles delivered. | A dated delivery record; it does not establish the current total in Ukraine. |
| Summer 2023 | The tracker says delivery was completed for 200 additional Senator commercial-pattern vehicles valued at over $92 million. | A separate tracker entry with its own description and scope. |
| Fiscal year 2022–23 | Canada’s Departmental Results Report records 208 Roshel armored SUVs: 204 Senators and four Land Rovers. | A reporting-year count. Do not add it to the eight and 200 as if all figures were separate, non-overlapping deliveries. |
| March 2026 | Canada announced that 383 Senators would be provided to Ukraine. | A commitment, not confirmation that all 383 have been delivered. |
The 2023 tracker describes personnel and equipment transport and medical evacuation among the vehicles’ uses. The 2026 announcement says Senators have been widely used by Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began. Roshel’s CEO, Roman Shimonov, was quoted in that announcement saying, “Over 2200 Senators are now deployed in Ukraine.” That is an executive’s attributed figure; the announcement does not reconcile its scope or method with the government’s dated delivery records.

What protection does each version offer?
Senator APC
Roshel says the APC’s passenger-compartment and engine-bay perimeter armor is designed for protection up to CEN B7. This is the manufacturer’s description of the APC; it is not the same claim as the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence’s STANAG-rated description of the MRAP. Roshel also says the Senator was tested by National Research Council Canada for static rollover threshold and roll response, reporting that it consistently reached a 39-degree side-slope mark on both sides. The “best-in-class” characterization on Roshel’s page is the company’s, not an independent comparative ranking by the NRC.
Senator MRAP
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence describes the MRAP as an enhanced off-road vehicle intended to protect the crew from mine blasts and other explosive devices. The ministry reports NATO STANAG 4569 Levels 2 and 3 certification for this variant and says it can withstand specified ballistic, blast, and fragmentation effects, including blasts equivalent to up to 8 kg of TNT. These are attributed specifications with a defined threat scope—not a promise of survival against every weapon or attack.

- Highly accurate static display model.
An earlier Ministry of Defence article about adoption of the MRAP says it is based on an American heavy-duty Ford F-550 chassis, with a 6.7-liter turbo-diesel rated above 300 horsepower. It describes a V-shaped floor designed to dissipate blast effects equivalent to 6 kg of TNT. Those details belong to that article’s MRAP account and should not be generalized to every Senator or treated as interchangeable with the later ministry description.
What equipment and roles are described for the MRAP?
The Ukrainian ministry lists a V-shaped hull, four-wheel drive, reinforced suspension, high ground clearance, all-around video surveillance, thermal imaging/night vision, run-flat tires, central tire inflation, and a CBRN filtration system. It also describes mission adaptations for personnel transport, medical evacuation, and command operations. The ministry’s list describes the MRAP; it does not establish that every Senator configuration carries every system.

These features point to a vehicle intended to move personnel and support varied missions while addressing blast and operational hazards. They do not by themselves measure battlefield survivability. Ukraine’s Major General Oleksandr Yakovets, head of the Administration of the State Special Transport Service, said of a delivery of 20 MRAP vehicles: “Today, the drone threat in operational areas requires us to act as quickly as possible, as protecting personnel remains the number one priority.” The statement explains the operational concern; it is not evidence that the vehicle is immune to drones.

The most supportable answer is narrower than the headline: the MRAP is described by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence as designed and certified for specified ballistic, blast, and fragmentation threats, with a V-shaped hull and other protective features. That is meaningful evidence about its intended protection and stated standards, but it does not establish that a particular vehicle survived a particular strike, or that any Senator can withstand a mine or drone attack in all circumstances.

The available records do not provide a battlefield survival rate, a verified count of hits survived, or a statistical measure of durability. Vehicle configuration, threat type, strike location, and conditions matter; a certification or design specification should not be mistaken for a guarantee of an outcome in combat.
