Ford ended North American production of the Edge at its Oakville, Ontario, plant amid a changing factory plan and a broader shift in its vehicle strategy. Ford’s announcements provide that context, but they do not name one specific, Edge-only reason for discontinuing the SUV. The evidence does not establish that weak Edge sales alone caused the decision or that the Edge was replaced by an electric SUV.
What Ford’s announcements do—and don’t—say
The most accurate explanation is that the Edge’s departure coincided with Ford reshaping Oakville’s production plans and revising its approach to electric and hybrid vehicles. Ford did not publish a standalone explanation for ending the Edge nameplate, identify a sales threshold that triggered the decision, or name a direct replacement.
That distinction matters: Ford’s planned all-electric three-row SUV program and the Edge were separate things. The company’s changes to the EV program help explain the broader strategic context, but do not establish that the Edge was cancelled to make room for that vehicle—or that the Edge itself was meant to become electric.
How the plans changed
| Date | What Ford announced | What it means for the Edge |
|---|---|---|
| April 4, 2024 | Ford moved the planned launch of next-generation three-row electric vehicles at Oakville from 2025 to 2027. Ford’s Oakville and EV-plan announcement described a timing change as the company continued developing its EV manufacturing system. | This was a change to the plant’s planned product timing, not an announcement that the Edge would become an EV. |
| April 2024; production data published May 2, 2024 | Ford’s U.S. sales and production release lists Edge production through April. The table reports 51,439 units produced year-to-date through that month. Ford’s April 2024 U.S. sales release provides the production figures. | The figure is production through April—not a full-year or lifetime total—and does not explain why Ford ended the model. |
| August 21, 2024 | Ford said it would not produce its previously planned all-electric three-row SUVs and would instead develop future three-row SUVs with hybrid technologies. Ford’s revised electrification strategy linked the change to profitability and capital efficiency. | This was a separate program change. It is relevant context for Ford’s strategy, not proof of a direct Edge successor. |
Why Ford changed its three-row SUV strategy
In August 2024, Ford said pricing and margin pressure, customer sensitivity to vehicle prices, and demand for hybrids shaped its product and technology decisions. It said it wanted a profitable, capital-efficient EV business and set a goal of positive EBIT within the first 12 months after launch for all new models. Ford also said it would record about $400 million in special non-cash charges to write down certain manufacturing assets tied to the all-electric three-row SUVs it would no longer produce. That charge concerned the cancelled EV program, not the Edge.

Ford vice chair and CFO John Lawler described the financial reasoning this way: “With pricing and margin compression, we’ve made the decision to adjust our product and technology roadmap and industrial footprint to meet our goal of reaching positive EBIT within the first 12 months of launch for all new models.” Ford’s August 21 announcement contains the statement and the company’s explanation.
Did weak sales cause the Edge to be discontinued?
The available figures do not establish that. Ford’s April production release gives Edge output through April 2024, but production volume is not a sales-performance explanation. The cited announcements do not provide an Edge-specific sales decline, profit margin, or internal decision rationale, so attributing the cancellation to poor Edge sales would go beyond what they say.

There was a wider market backdrop. The Associated Press reported on April 4, 2024, that U.S. EV sales grew 3.3% in the first quarter of 2024, compared with 47% growth in the prior-year comparison, while U.S. hybrid sales grew 45% from January through March. Those are market figures, not Edge sales statistics, and AP’s coverage does not show that they caused Ford to discontinue the model. The Associated Press report provides that contemporary market context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the Edge replaced by a hybrid or electric SUV?
Ford’s announcements do not identify a direct replacement for the Edge. The later hybrid direction applies to Ford’s future three-row SUVs; it does not establish that any one of them is an Edge successor. Likewise, the earlier Oakville EV plan was for three-row electric vehicles, not an announced electric Edge. A shared plant or broad SUV category is not enough to prove a direct model-to-model replacement.
