The Real Difference Between Honda and Acura

Acura is Honda’s premium performance brand, but the two U.S. lineups differ. Here’s how to compare the actual vehicles, trims, and prices.

Honda is the parent company; Acura is Honda’s premium performance automobile brand, established in 1986 primarily for North America. In the United States, the clearest day-to-day difference is what each brand sells and how it positions its vehicles—not a guarantee that every Acura has a direct Honda counterpart.

Is Acura just the luxury version of Honda?

That is a useful shorthand, but it leaves out Acura’s performance positioning. Honda describes Acura as its “premium performance automobile brand” and says it was established in 1986, primarily for the North American market. Honda’s March 5, 2026 release also connects the brand with its “Precision Crafted Performance” identity.

So the brands are related, but they are not interchangeable badges for the same complete lineup. Honda serves a broader range of vehicle categories in the U.S.; Acura’s U.S. lineup is more focused. The brand name alone does not establish that two vehicles share a platform, components, equipment, or ownership costs.

What vehicles do Honda and Acura sell in the U.S.?

Acura’s U.S. overview page lists four models: the Integra, ADX, RDX, and MDX. Its page-displayed starting prices, as accessed October 4, 2026, are shown below. Check the Acura overview for current pricing and availability.

Acura model Starting price displayed on Acura’s U.S. overview
Integra $33,400
ADX $35,000
RDX $45,100
MDX $51,800

Honda’s U.S. lineup page covers multiple vehicle categories and includes newer model-year entries. As examples—not a complete or fixed lineup—the page displayed a starting MSRP of $42,395 for the 2026 Pilot and $44,950 for the 2026 Passport when accessed October 4, 2026. See Honda’s current vehicle lineup for its live models and prices.

These displayed starting figures provide orientation, not a like-for-like price comparison. The vehicles differ in class and body style, and a starting price does not tell you what a particular trim costs or includes. Compare equivalent model years and configurations before deciding that one badge is the less expensive choice.

How should you compare a Honda with an Acura?

Start with the job the vehicle needs to do, then compare specific models and trims. A brand-level comparison cannot tell you which car or SUV is the better fit.

  • Vehicle type and use: Match body style, passenger and cargo needs, and intended driving. Do not assume every Acura has a direct Honda equivalent.
  • Budget: Compare the actual trim and options you would buy, not just the displayed entry prices. The cited lineup pages do not establish transaction prices or total ownership costs.
  • Powertrain and equipment: Check the exact model-year specifications and which features are standard or optional on each trim. The fact that Acura is a Honda brand does not establish identical components or equipment.
  • Driving priorities: Decide how you weigh performance, comfort, and everyday practicality, then evaluate the specific vehicles against those priorities rather than relying on the badge alone.
  • Ownership needs: Check the applicable warranty and service details for the vehicles you are considering. Brand relationship by itself does not establish comparative reliability, insurance, depreciation, or maintenance costs.

What does Honda’s hybrid plan mean for buyers?

Honda’s May 14, 2026 business briefing said both Honda and Acura would expand their hybrid lineups. Honda said it planned to begin launching next-generation hybrid models in 2027. That is a corporate plan announced on that date, not a guarantee of a specific model’s launch or availability. See the Honda business briefing summary for the company’s statement.

For a purchase decision, check the powertrain listed for the exact model year and trim you are shopping. A broad plan to expand hybrids does not establish that a particular vehicle is already offered as a hybrid.

What the brand difference does—and does not—tell you

The relationship answers who owns the brand and how Honda positions it: Acura is Honda’s premium performance marque. It does not, on its own, answer whether one particular Honda or Acura is faster, better equipped, more reliable, cheaper to maintain, or a better value. Those questions require a model-, year-, and trim-specific comparison.
