Yes. In MotorTrend’s same-model-year comparison, its 2026 Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter Hemi reached 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, while the truck with the standard-output 3.0-liter Hurricane did it in 5.3 seconds. Those are results for the specific trucks tested—not guaranteed times for every Ram 1500. Car and Driver recorded the same overall pattern in separate tests.
How much quicker was the Hurricane in testing?
MotorTrend’s 2025 comparison of 2026 Ram 1500s is the closest apples-to-apples result in the published figures: the Hemi took 6.1 seconds to reach 60 mph and the standard-output Hurricane took 5.3 seconds. The Hurricane truck was 64 pounds lighter because of option differences, so the comparison was close, but not perfectly matched. MotorTrend’s comparison discusses acceleration alongside other differences between its test trucks.
Car and Driver’s tests also put the standard-output Hurricane ahead, though the vehicles differed more. Its 2026 Hemi Big Horn 4×4 Crew Cab reached 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. A 2025 standard-output Hurricane 4×4 Big Horn did it in 4.8 seconds. The Hurricane test truck weighed 5,765 pounds—181 pounds more than the Hemi at 5,584 pounds—and had different tires, among other model-year and configuration differences. The results support the same conclusion, but they do not isolate engine choice as the sole cause of the time gap. Car and Driver’s instrumented test results list the truck specifications.
These are independent publication measurements, not 0–60 times advertised by Ram on its engine-specification page. Actual results can vary with configuration, weight, tires, surface, and test method.

Which Hurricane engine are you comparing?
Ram offers two 3.0-liter Hurricane outputs, and the distinction matters. The standard-output Hurricane is the relevant comparison for the 5.7-liter Hemi in the headline. The high-output Hurricane is a more powerful, separate version; its quicker published test result should not be attributed to the standard engine.

Ram’s ratings are for the 2026 engines; the acceleration figures are publication tests of the particular vehicles named, not results for every trim. The high-output Hurricane’s 4.2-second result is a separate test and not a direct standard-output-versus-Hemi comparison. Ram’s 2026 Ram 1500 specifications list the engine ratings and 4×4 availability.

Why is the standard Hurricane quicker?
Ram rates the standard-output Hurricane 25 hp and 59 lb-ft above the Hemi. Car and Driver also reports that the Hurricane reaches peak torque 450 rpm sooner in its comparison. That combination is consistent with the Hurricane’s quicker measured acceleration, but peak ratings alone do not predict a specific truck’s 0–60 time: gearing, traction, vehicle weight, tires, and test conditions also affect the result.
What does the difference mean if you’re choosing an engine?
For acceleration
The tested standard-output Hurricane was quicker in both publications’ comparisons. For the fairest direct comparison, give the same-year MotorTrend result the most weight, while remembering that its trucks still differed by 64 pounds in options. Car and Driver’s separate results reinforce the pattern but involve different model years and test configurations.

For fuel economy
Ram’s 2026 4×4 page lists manufacturer-estimated city/highway fuel economy of 17/24 mpg for the standard-output Hurricane and 15/20 mpg for the high-output Hurricane. The reviewed Hemi section does not show an MPG estimate, so there is no Hemi figure to compare from that page. These are manufacturer estimates for the listed 4×4 configurations, not a promise of real-world economy; check the live configuration for the truck you are considering.
For towing, payload, and trim availability
Do not infer towing or payload capacity from the acceleration times. Those figures depend on the exact cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, and trim, and the available evidence does not establish one engine as best for every work configuration. Confirm the ratings for the specific truck and verify current engine-and-trim combinations before buying; model-year availability changes.

For sound and driving character
MotorTrend writer Scott Evans wrote, “The Hemi sounds better.” That is a subjective preference, not a performance measurement. Whether the V8’s sound matters more to you than the Hurricane’s quicker tested acceleration is a personal choice.

The Hemi returned for model year 2026 after being absent from the 2025 Ram 1500 lineup. Ram’s 2025 lineup instead included the standard- and high-output Hurricanes and the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. For 2026, Ram lists the Hemi on select trims, alongside the two Hurricane outputs; confirm current availability for the trim and configuration you want.
