BMW’s September 2026 announcements describe petrol-powered versions, with a plug-in hybrid planned to follow, but do not list a diesel. That marks a change for the 3 Series—not the end of diesel engines across BMW—and the company has not publicly explained the omission in the announcements reviewed.
What BMW has announced for the new 3 Series
BMW’s September 8, 2026 announcement describes a development-phase combustion 3 Series with four- and six-cylinder engines and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Its sole announced six-cylinder combustion model is the M350 xDrive. BMW cautions that the development vehicle’s figures are provisional and that WLTP consumption information is not yet available, so those figures should not be treated as final production specifications. In its September 30 new-model announcement, BMW specifies the initial combustion models as four-cylinder petrol versions and the M350 xDrive as a 3.0-litre petrol six-cylinder. It says a plug-in hybrid will join over the following year. The announcement concerns the upcoming range, not a guarantee that every model or timing will apply in every country; BMW notes that equipment and consumption figures in that release relate to the German market and may differ elsewhere. - Petrol: Four-cylinder models and the six-cylinder M350 xDrive are named in BMW’s announcements.
- Plug-in hybrid: BMW says one will join over the following year; the cited announcement does not establish availability in every market.
- Diesel: No diesel appears in the announced new-generation lineup.
- Fully electric: The cited announcements do not establish a fully electric 3 Series as part of this lineup.
Why the diesel has disappeared
BMW has not given a specific reason for leaving diesel out of the announced new 3 Series range. BMWBLOG reported on September 29, 2026, that a BMW spokesperson confirmed the new sedan would be offered with petrol power, either on its own or as a plug-in hybrid, and said the company gave no specific reason for the decision. It would therefore be speculation to attribute the change to emissions rules, buyer demand, or cost. BMWBLOG’s report

This is a lineup decision for the new-generation 3 Series described in those announcements. It is not evidence that BMW has ended diesel production across its wider range.
Diesel has been part of the 3 Series for decades
BMW’s official history traces diesel and four-wheel drive in the 3 Series to the second generation and identifies the 324d as a diesel sedan. It also records later diesel versions, including the six-cylinder 325tds and four-cylinder turbo-diesel 318tds. BMW says the second-generation 3 Series sold more than 2.3 million units; that is a historical total, not a current sales figure. BMW’s 3 Series history

BMW’s historical document establishes the diesel lineage but does not give the first diesel model year in the portion cited here. BMWBLOG dates the diesel’s introduction to 1985, so the “more than 40 years” framing rests on that outlet’s reporting rather than on a date stated in BMW’s history document. BMWBLOG’s report
How the announced range compares with the 2024 lineup
The shift is clear against BMW’s May 2024 description of the 3 Series Sedan and Touring range. At that time, BMW described four petrol and four diesel engines, alongside plug-in hybrid models and a six-cylinder diesel M Performance model. The document describes that range at that time; it does not establish that every engine and body-style combination was available in every market. BMW’s 2024 range announcement

What this means if you want a diesel 3 Series
If diesel is essential, the new-generation 3 Series described by BMW is not currently an announced option. The 2024 range document shows that diesel versions belonged to the preceding lineup, but it does not establish whether any particular model remains available to order now in a given country. Check the local BMW configurator or dealer for current stock and order availability rather than assuming the older range carries over.
If you are considering the new range, the announced alternatives are petrol, including the six-cylinder M350 xDrive, and a plug-in hybrid expected to join later. BMW has not provided final fuel-consumption figures in the cited announcements, so they do not support a like-for-like running-cost comparison with the former diesel models.
