In SlashGear’s 2023 ranking, Volkswagen’s 2.5-liter EA855 five-cylinder takes first place, followed by the 1.8T and the 3.2-liter 24-valve VR6. That order is an editorial judgment—not the result of a standardized comparison of failure rates. An engine’s code, generation, maintenance history and vehicle application can matter more than its family name or displacement.

| 9 | 2.0-liter EA113 TSI |
| 10 | Air-cooled boxer |
The order above reproduces the ranking published by SlashGear on July 1, 2023. It is useful as a shortlist, but the article does not provide a scoring formula or comparable fleet failure data. The engine-specific notes below explain the strengths and cautions behind the placements without treating them as a guarantee for any individual car.
What to know about each engine
1. 2.5-liter EA855 five-cylinder
SlashGear’s first-place choice is the North American naturally aspirated 2.5-liter offered from 2008 to 2014. Its comparatively straightforward layout—cast-iron block and chain-driven cams—is the stated basis for its durability reputation. The tradeoff is poor fuel economy compared with smaller engines.
SlashGear also gives this engine an average lifespan of 280,000 miles with proper care. It does not publish the data or method behind that figure, so treat it as the article’s estimate, not a verified fleet average or a promise about a used example.

2. 1.8T
The 1.8T earned its place for combining useful power and economy and appearing across many Volkswagen applications. SlashGear points to an exceptionally high-mileage 2001 Jetta as an illustration, but describes it as meticulously maintained. That example supports the importance of care; it does not establish how long a typical 1.8T lasts.
3. 3.2-liter 24-valve VR6 FSI
The narrow-angle VR6 packages six cylinders into a compact layout. SlashGear identifies coil packs and belt tensioners as potential trouble areas, and says a well-maintained engine may exceed 150,000 miles. No population data or calculation supports that mileage expectation, so use it as a broad editorial estimate rather than a service-life benchmark.
4. 1.6-liter EA827 petrol
This widely used four-cylinder family has a long production history and a reputation for being competent, economical and generally reliable. That history is also why a single reliability verdict can mislead: the EA827 name covers numerous variants and applications, not one uniform engine with one failure profile.

5. 1.5-liter EA827 diesel
The Golf and Rabbit diesel appeared in 1976 with 50 horsepower; the engine grew to 1.6 liters in 1981. Historical reliability information is limited, and owner accounts cited by SlashGear are anecdotes rather than a systematic record. The fifth-place ranking should therefore be read with more uncertainty than a well-documented comparison would allow.
6. 1.9-liter TDI ALH
The ALH is a rotary-pump, direct-injection diesel that first appeared in a Jetta in 1999. Its durability reputation is strong, but it depends on maintenance. SlashGear warns that a late timing-belt change can cause catastrophic engine damage; it also flags intake or EGR air leaks as possible causes of poor drivability.
SlashGear recounts a Swindon Advertiser report of a 2001 Volkswagen owner’s car reaching 507,759 miles. That is a reported individual case—not a typical lifespan, an independently established engine limit or a prediction for another ALH.

7. 1.8-liter EA888 TSI
This placement needs a generation qualification. SlashGear names timing-chain trouble on some engines, along with ignition-coil and water-pump problems. A July 2026 article from engine supplier PowerEngines likewise distinguishes generations: it describes tensioner issues affecting EA888 Gen 1 and Gen 2, while noting that Gen 3 addressed those issues. It also lists aging PCV components and water pumps as Gen 3 concerns.
PowerEngines sells engines, so its generation guidance is useful context, not independent comparative failure-rate evidence. Identify the exact generation before applying a general EA888 reputation to a particular car.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute8. 6.0-liter WR12 48-valve
SlashGear says the W12 itself is rarely the source of Phaeton repair complaints, while emphasizing the high cost of owning and repairing the car. That distinction matters: an engine’s durability does not make the whole vehicle inexpensive to maintain, and a costly repair environment can change the practical value of a reliable engine.

9. 2.0-liter EA113 TSI
SlashGear characterizes this engine as mostly dependable but flags belt maintenance and intake-carbon deposits associated with direct injection. EA113 variants and applications differ, so confirm the precise engine and its specified service schedule before relying on a generic interval or maintenance checklist.
10. Air-cooled boxer
The air-cooled boxer’s simple, serviceable design is its appeal in SlashGear’s account. These engines are also old, making the condition of the individual engine and the quality of its maintenance history especially important to any present-day reliability judgment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why engine code and generation matter
A displacement or family label can cover meaningful design changes. PowerEngines’ July 2026 buyer guidance recommends checking the engine code and generation rather than choosing by displacement alone. Its examples include the 2005–2014 2.5-liter, later 24-valve VR6, common-rail 2.0 TDI and a 1.8T with documented history. Because this is a supplier’s perspective, treat these as options to investigate, not as an independent reliability ranking.

Volkswagen’s December 14, 2020 newsroom release dates the EA288 four-cylinder TDI debut to 2012 and describes a later major development that brought the “evo” designation. The release discusses emissions equipment and vehicle applications; it does not establish that the EA288 is more reliable than the engines above.
How to choose a reliable used Volkswagen
- Identify the exact engine. Ask for the engine code and verify the generation, model year and local-market application. Do not assume two cars with the same displacement share the same hardware or service needs.
- Check the maintenance record. Look for evidence of scheduled work, especially timing-belt service where applicable. For a specific engine, confirm the correct interval and procedure rather than guessing from a broad family name.
- Assess known failure points and repair access. Consider not only what can fail, but the likely cost and difficulty of reaching or replacing the component in that vehicle.
- Match the engine to its use. For a diesel, consider whether the car’s emissions equipment suits the driver’s typical trips. A model’s reputation cannot compensate for an unsuitable use pattern.
- Inspect the individual car. A documented, well-maintained example may be a better choice than a higher-ranked engine with uncertain history. The ranking cannot substitute for a vehicle-specific inspection.
- Check open campaigns by VIN. Volkswagen’s official recall and service-campaign lookup uses the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN. Volkswagen distinguishes safety recalls—actions for safety defects or noncompliance—from service campaigns addressing technical issues, which can also relate to emissions.
How much confidence should you place in the ranking?
The ranking is clear about which engines SlashGear prefers, but the evidence does not establish a statistical winner. Its mileage examples are anecdotes, and its lifespan claims are not accompanied by underlying datasets. Generation and application differences further limit broad comparisons. Use the list to focus your search, then judge the exact engine and car by code, service history, condition and intended use.
