There is no single proven reliability winner for every German mid-size SUV, model year and engine. In Germany’s latest cited inspection evidence, the Mercedes-Benz GLC stands out among four-to-five-year-old vehicles, while the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and GLC all scored above average at first inspection. These are roadworthiness inspection results—not a complete measure of breakdown risk, repair costs or the condition of a particular used car.
Which German mid-size SUV is most reliable?
For a Germany-focused used-car comparison, the Mercedes-Benz GLC has the strongest specific result in the TÜV figures cited here: a 4.8% significant-defect rate among four-to-five-year-old vehicles in the TÜV-Report 2026. That is well below the 10.0% average for the same age group, and the GLC ranked fourth in that age group. It is a favorable inspection result, not proof that every GLC is dependable or that it is the best choice at every age.
In a separate comparison of first inspections, the GLC, Audi Q5 and BMW X3 all exceeded the reported average. Their scores were close, so the small gaps should not be treated as evidence of a major difference in ownership reliability.
What the reliability figures measure
The TÜV figures describe significant defects found at periodic roadworthiness inspections. The TÜV-Report 2026 dataset covers nearly 9.5 million inspections conducted from July 2024 through June 2025, across 246 models and six age groups. TÜV-Verband says it evaluates 18 selected defect types, including brakes, suspension and lighting; the report also includes areas such as oil leaks, engine management, emissions and exhaust. ADAC’s breakdown statistics measure something different: roadside-assistance cases per 1,000 vehicles, known as the Pannenkennziffer (PKZ). The 2026 statistics analyze breakdown data from 2025. ADAC reports that nearly half of roadside-assistance cases were attributed to 12-volt battery failure, which can affect vehicles regardless of propulsion. The cited ADAC material does not provide a clear comparative ranking for the Q5, X3, GLC and Porsche Macan, so it cannot be used here to declare one of those models the breakdown winner. Inspection defects and breakdown incidence are not interchangeable. Neither measure establishes total repair costs, owner satisfaction or long-term failure rates for every engine and drivetrain. The TÜV-Report is useful for comparing inspection outcomes at a given age; ADAC data can help assess roadside breakdown patterns where model-level figures are available.

How the Q5, X3 and GLC compare
Auto Bild’s 2025 comparison focuses on the first and second German roadworthiness inspections and identifies the Audi Q5 FY, BMW X3 G01 and Mercedes GLC X 253. At first inspection, the reported shares of vehicles without defects were:

These are first-inspection figures from Auto Bild’s 2025 comparison, not results for all ages or later generations. The GLC led this particular comparison, but its 0.2-percentage-point gap over the Q5 is narrow. The figures support the conclusion that all three performed above average at first inspection—not that one has a decisive advantage across the whole ownership period. Why a used SUV’s age and generation matter
A model’s inspection record can change with age, so a strong result for one age group should not be generalized to every used example. Auto Bild’s 2026 synthesis says the Audi Q5 performs better than average in nearly all age groups, but six-to-seven-year-old Q5s have a worse-than-average defect rate, with suspension defects particularly common in the second generation. This is a reason to pay close attention to the suspension on an older Q5, not a claim that every Q5 in that age bracket has a defect. The figures cited for the Q5 FY, X3 G01 and GLC X 253 do not establish the inspection performance of their successors, nor do they separate every engine, fuel type or drivetrain. A buyer comparing specific examples should match the vehicle’s generation and age to the evidence rather than rely on a badge-level ranking.

How to assess a specific Q5, X3 or GLC
Model-level statistics can help narrow a search, but they cannot tell you whether an individual vehicle was maintained properly or has a developing fault. Before buying, check the car’s own records and condition:
- Confirm the generation and age. Match the vehicle to the model generation and inspection age represented in the comparison; do not assume newer generations share the same results.
- Review mileage and maintenance records. Look for a consistent service history and investigate gaps or unclear work, particularly where the vehicle has high mileage.
- Read the inspection history. Check TÜV/HU reports for recorded defects, advisories and recurring issues rather than relying only on a model average.
- Inspect the vehicle before purchase. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. For a six-to-seven-year-old second-generation Q5, ask the inspector to pay particular attention to the suspension.
- Consider the exact powertrain and drivetrain. The comparisons cited do not establish a reliability ranking for every engine or configuration, so evaluate the specific version and its service documentation.
A favorable TÜV result is a useful screening signal, not a guarantee of a trouble-free car. Auto Bild also cautions that a model’s report result cannot establish an individual vehicle’s condition.

What the evidence can—and cannot—settle
The available German inspection comparisons support a measured conclusion: the GLC has a notably low significant-defect rate in the four-to-five-year age group, and the Q5 FY, X3 G01 and GLC X 253 each exceeded average at first inspection. They do not establish a universal winner across all ages, generations, powertrains or ownership situations. Porsche’s Macan may fit some buyers’ definition of a German mid-size premium SUV, but the cited inspection comparisons do not establish its ranking alongside these three models.
