There is no evidence-based single winner among Toyota, Honda, and Lexus without comparing specific hybrid SUV models and model years. Current broad surveys suggest hybrids are generally dependable, and Lexus ranks highly in a premium-brand dependability study. Neither finding proves that one brand’s hybrid SUVs are more reliable than the others. For a useful buying decision, compare the exact vehicles, check recalls by model year and VIN, and review the history of any used SUV.
What the latest reliability surveys say
Two recent surveys offer useful context, but neither supplies a like-for-like reliability ranking of Toyota, Honda, and Lexus hybrid SUVs.
Consumer Reports: hybrids as a category
Consumer Reports says its latest annual reliability survey found hybrids generally had fewer problems than gas-only vehicles. The survey drew on owners of about 380,000 vehicles from model years 2000 through 2025, as well as a few early 2026 models. That is a broad category finding, not a ranking of particular Toyota, Honda, or Lexus SUVs. The surfaced reporting does not provide a comparable model-level table for these brands’ hybrid SUVs. J.D. Power: dependability after three years
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reported 213 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) for hybrids, compared with 204 PP100 overall. Lower PP100 means fewer reported problems. The study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; fieldwork ran from December 2024 through November 2025. Its results cover 184 problem areas across nine categories, including technology and infotainment, so “problems” does not mean mechanical failures alone. The hybrid figure is a powertrain-wide average, not a score for any one brand or SUV. J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS results and methodology

The year-to-year comparison matters: the 2025 VDS reported 199 PP100 for hybrids and 200 PP100 for gas-powered vehicles. Those older figures should not be presented as the current result; the 2026 study’s hybrid average was higher. The 2025 study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 vehicles from August through November 2024. J.D. Power’s 2025 VDS results
How to interpret Toyota, Honda, and Lexus brand scores
J.D. Power’s 2026 study ranked Lexus highest among premium brands, at 151 PP100. In the 2025 study, Lexus scored 140 PP100. Toyota scored 162 PP100 among mass-market brands in 2025. These figures come from different market groupings and study years, so they are not a direct comparison of the three brands, much less a head-to-head of their hybrid SUVs. A brand-wide result cannot establish the reliability of every model it sells.

The studies also describe reported problems among owners of older model-year vehicles, not a forecast for every current or future SUV. A score can provide background, but it cannot substitute for evidence about the particular model and year you are considering.

- Model- and year-specific reliability: Look for evidence tied to the exact model and model year. Do not assume a brand-level score applies equally to every SUV.
- Design and hybrid-system history: Consider how long the vehicle’s design and hybrid system have been in use. A familiar system is relevant context, but it is not by itself proof of reliability.
- Recalls and service campaigns: Check the precise model year and, for a vehicle you may buy, its VIN. Confirm whether applicable work was completed.
- Owner and repair history: For a used SUV, review available service records and vehicle history, and have its condition assessed before purchase.
These checks help distinguish a generally strong brand reputation from the condition and track record of the vehicle in front of you. The available survey evidence does not establish a current model-level winner across Toyota, Honda, and Lexus hybrid SUVs.
