There is no evidence-based overall winner among German compact SUVs in 2024. Two standout results measure different things: ADAC recorded 0.7 roadside breakdowns per 1,000 three-year-old BMW X1s in its 2024 statistics, while the TÜV Report 2024 named the Audi Q2—not Q3—the leading SUV in its two- to three-year-old inspection category, with a 2.1% significant-defect rate. Those figures are not a head-to-head comparison, so neither proves one model is more reliable overall.
What “reliable” means in the available data
Reliability can mean avoiding a roadside breakdown, passing a periodic inspection without significant defects, or delivering a trouble-free and affordable ownership experience. The available German data address the first two, not the third. ADAC counts breakdowns that lead to its roadside-assistance operations; TÜV reports significant defects found during periodic inspections. Neither measure captures every fault, repair cost, maintenance history, or owner’s experience.
- ADAC breakdown rate: Breakdown callouts per 1,000 vehicles, useful for comparing roadside-assistance incidents in the cohorts reported.
- TÜV significant-defect rate: The share of inspected vehicles found to have significant defects, useful for comparing inspection outcomes within the same age group and class.
Both sources concern Germany. ADAC notes that manufacturer-provided roadside assistance can affect whether a breakdown becomes an ADAC callout, so its figures are not a census of every vehicle failure. The metrics should not be merged into a single score.
What the 2024 results say about the candidates
| Model and result | Measure and cohort | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| BMW X1: 0.7 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles | ADAC 2024 statistics; three-year-old vehicles; breakdowns recorded in 2023. | A notably low breakdown rate for this specific age cohort, not a result for every X1 model year or generation. |
| Audi Q2: 2.1% significant-defect rate | TÜV Report 2024; two- to three-year-old vehicles; SUV class. | The Q2 led the SUV class in this inspection category. It is not an Audi Q3 result and does not rank all compact SUVs. |
| VW Tiguan: 11.3 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles | ADAC model page; 2021 registration cohort. | Applies to that registration cohort, not the Tiguan III introduced in 2024. |
| Audi Q3: 3.9% significant-defect rate | TÜV SÜD’s currently published table; vehicles up to three years old; report edition and inspection period not confirmed. | Age-group context only; the available information does not establish a 2024 result or a direct comparison with the other figures. |
| BMW X1: 22.1% significant-defect rate | TÜV SÜD’s currently published table; vehicles up to thirteen years old; report edition and inspection period not confirmed. | A much older age group than the Q3 figure above, so it cannot be used to compare the two models. |
BMW X1 reliability: a strong but limited ADAC result
ADAC’s 2024 breakdown statistics report 0.7 breakdowns per 1,000 three-year-old BMW X1s. The report counts roadside-assistance breakdowns that occurred in 2023 among vehicles aged three to ten years and first registered from 2014 through 2021. It covered 156 models from around 20 makes, subject to registration-volume eligibility criteria. ADAC classifies a model series as reliable when its breakdown index ranks among the best 40% in every age year from three through ten.

The X1 figure is for one age cohort, not every X1, engine, drivetrain, or model year. It is evidence about the incidence of ADAC-recorded breakdowns in that cohort; it does not establish that X1 ownership is cheapest or that the vehicle has fewer inspection defects. ADAC’s Pannenstatistik 2024 explains the breakdown data and methodology.
Audi Q2 and Q3: keep the inspection findings separate
The TÜV Report 2024 named the Audi Q2 the leading SUV in its two- to three-year-old periodic-inspection category, with a 2.1% significant-defect rate. That is an inspection result for the Q2, not the Q3. The report analyzed 10.2 million German periodic vehicle inspections conducted from July 2022 to June 2023 across 221 vehicle types. Across all inspected passenger cars, 20.5% had significant or dangerous defects; that overall figure is context, not a compact-SUV comparison.

The Q3 figure sometimes encountered in TÜV SÜD’s currently published table is different: 3.9% for vehicles up to three years old. The accessible table does not identify its report edition or inspection period, so it cannot be safely presented as a 2024 result. TÜV SÜD also lists 22.1% for BMW X1 vehicles up to thirteen years old; that much older cohort is not comparable with the Q3’s up-to-three-year group. TÜV-Verband’s TÜV Report 2024 announcement gives the Q2 category result and report scope; TÜV SÜD’s published table is the source for its age-group figures.
VW Tiguan reliability: registration year and generation matter
ADAC’s model page distinguishes the Tiguan II (introduced in 2016), its 2020–2024 facelift, and the Tiguan III, which appeared in 2024. Its displayed breakdown rates per 1,000 vehicles vary by registration year:

The page names the starter battery among the Tiguan’s breakdown issues. Its displayed 2021 and 2023 figures belong to those registration cohorts; the accessible excerpt does not give the full observation period for each year, and the newest cohorts should be read cautiously. In particular, the older-cohort rates cannot be projected onto the Tiguan III. ADAC’s VW Tiguan model page provides the generation and registration-year details.

- Choose the outcome first. Compare ADAC breakdown rates with other ADAC breakdown rates, or TÜV defect rates with TÜV defect rates—not one measure against the other.
- Match vehicle age and registration cohort. A rate for three-year-old vehicles does not answer how a ten-year-old example performs.
- Check the generation. Where a model changed generations during the data window, confirm which generation the cohort represents.
- Keep market and fleet consistent. These cited statistics describe Germany; they do not automatically predict results in another country or fleet.
- Separate engine and drivetrain claims. The available sources do not establish a consistent engine- or drivetrain-specific comparison across the Q3, X1, GLA, and Tiguan.
- Assess ownership costs independently. These data do not rank repair costs. A cost comparison needs comparable parts, labor, and maintenance evidence.
The available sources do not provide a consistent head-to-head ranking of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, and VW Tiguan, nor a comparable owner survey or repair-cost dataset covering all four. They support specific cohort findings, not a definitive overall “most reliable German compact SUV” title.
