The clearest documented milestones instead show four ways engineers addressed turbo lag, airflow, efficiency and electrification: gasoline variable turbine geometry, two-stage turbocharging, electric turbo assistance and the wider adoption of variable-geometry designs. The examples below are significant architectures and production applications, not a ranked list or independent performance test.
What makes a turbo system groundbreaking?
A turbocharger uses exhaust energy to drive a turbine connected to a compressor, which forces more air into an engine. The engineering challenge is that the best setup for quick response at low engine speed may not be the best for moving enough air at high engine speed. Systems can also be shaped by packaging, fuel economy and emissions requirements.
For this overview, a milestone is notable when it introduced a meaningful architecture to a production application, addressed a persistent response or efficiency trade-off, or marked a supplier-identified step in adoption. Those measures explain why the examples matter, but they do not establish a definitive ranking of the ten best systems.
Four production milestones that show how turbocharging evolved
1. Porsche 911 Turbo gasoline VTG: variable turbine geometry in a high-temperature application
For the 2006 911 Turbo, Porsche announced what it described as the world’s first turbocharged gasoline engine with variable turbine geometry (VTG). VTG uses adjustable guide vanes to direct exhaust flow toward the turbine, changing how the turbine is driven across operating conditions. That can help reconcile low-speed response with higher-speed airflow without relying on a fixed turbine geometry.

Applying the design to a gasoline engine was a notable challenge because exhaust temperatures are high. Porsche said it used high-temperature-resistant materials developed in cooperation with BorgWarner. The “first” designation is Porsche’s own claim, made in its 2005 announcement of the 2006 model, rather than an independently established industry ranking.
2. BMW 2.0-litre diesel two-stage turbocharging: different jobs for each stage
A two-stage system routes exhaust and compressed air through two differently sized or controlled turbochargers in sequence. In a 2019 account of a BMW 2.0-litre diesel application, BorgWarner described a low-pressure VTG turbo working with a high-pressure wastegate turbo. This is more informative than simply calling it “twin turbo”: the stages use different control strategies and contribute differently across the engine’s operating range.

BorgWarner noted that most of its R2S applications used VTG in the high-pressure stage, whereas this BMW configuration put VTG in the low-pressure stage. 3. Porsche 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid eTurbo: electric assistance and energy recovery
Announced in 2024 for the 2025 model, the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid uses an electrically assisted exhaust turbocharger. Porsche describes an electric motor between the turbine and compressor that helps bring the turbo up to speed. At other operating points, the motor can act as a generator, recovering energy from the exhaust stream.

Porsche says this GTS uses one eTurbo instead of the prior two conventional turbochargers and that the system has no wastegate. Its published specifications are 398 kW system output and 610 Nm system torque; Porsche also gives a maximum electricity-generation figure of 11 kW. These are manufacturer figures for this particular model, not independent measurements or values that apply to eTurbos generally. The system is part of the car’s integrated hybrid powertrain, not a generic replacement turbo. Details are in Porsche’s 2024 T-Hybrid announcement.
4. Supplier milestones: two-stage diesel, hybrid turbocharging and high-volume gasoline VNT
Garrett’s company timeline identifies three milestones in its own history: its first passenger-car diesel two-stage system in 2006, a turbo on a gasoline hybrid passenger car in 2008, and a high-volume gasoline passenger-car variable-nozzle turbine (VNT) in 2017. These dates help show the spread of turbocharging strategies across diesel, hybrid and gasoline applications. They are Garrett’s company-reported milestones, not an independently verified ranking of industry firsts. See Garrett’s company timeline.

Electric turbocharger or electric compressor: not the same thing
An electrically assisted exhaust turbocharger places an electric motor-generator on the turbo shaft. Depending on the design and operating conditions, the motor can help accelerate the turbo, and the generator can recover energy. BorgWarner describes its eTurbo as a turbocharger with a motor directly coupled to the shaft, allowing the machine to work as a motor or generator; the company announced a mass-market eTurbo business win in 2020. A separate electrically driven compressor is not the same architecture: it compresses intake air using electrical power rather than relying on an exhaust-driven turbine with a motor-generator on its shaft. The distinction matters when comparing systems or looking for parts. Porsche’s GTS eTurbo is an integrated exhaust turbo in a hybrid powertrain, not simply an electric compressor or a universal bolt-on upgrade.

What these milestones mean for owners and repair work
These systems are designed around particular engines and powertrains. A replacement turbocharger must match the vehicle’s engine, control strategy, emissions configuration and installation requirements. A conventional replacement unit should not be treated as a substitute for a proprietary electrically assisted turbo or an integrated hybrid system.
- Confirm the vehicle’s exact model year, engine code and original turbo specification before ordering a vehicle-specific replacement turbocharger.
- Check whether the system uses VTG/VNT controls, multiple turbo stages, electrical connections or hybrid-powertrain integration; those differences affect compatibility and installation.
- Use the correct turbocharger installation components and follow the vehicle maker’s service procedure. A turbo failure may also require diagnosing the cause rather than replacing the unit alone.
- For electronic faults, verify the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure and use an automotive scan tool appropriate to the car; a generic part description does not establish compatibility.
Garrett describes both replacement and performance-enhancement products in its aftermarket information. That does not establish fitment for every vehicle, nor does it make an aftermarket unit a direct replacement for the Porsche eTurbo system.
