There is no single, definitive “most aerodynamic car” across all eras and vehicle types. Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency concept has the lowest coefficient in the examples here, at a manufacturer-reported Cd of 0.158; among the production examples covered, Mercedes-Benz reports a Cd of 0.20 for the EQS. Those numbers describe different vehicles and are not a neutral, like-for-like ranking.
What makes a car aerodynamic?
A car’s drag coefficient, or Cd, is a dimensionless measure of how effectively its shape moves through air. It does not, by itself, tell you how much aerodynamic resistance the whole vehicle faces: frontal area matters too. Mercedes-Benz explains the distinction between these measures in its overview of automotive aerodynamic disciplines.
That is why a lower Cd is not automatically proof that one complete car has less drag than another. When available, compare both Cd and frontal area, and note the vehicle’s status—production car, concept, prototype or record vehicle—as well as the source and conditions behind the figure.
How the pursuit of low drag developed
From Jaray’s streamlined form to Kamm’s cutoff tail
Early streamlining sought to guide air smoothly around a vehicle and toward a long, tapering rear. Mercedes-Benz’s history traces the influence of the Jaray form and describes the long tail as a disadvantage. Wunibald Kamm’s alternative retained a streamlined shape but cut off the rear more sharply; Mercedes-Benz says Kamm developed the K-Wagen from 1938 to 1941, helping establish the approach now called a Kamm-back.

Mercedes-Benz reports that the K3, based on a Mercedes-Benz 170 V, had a Cd of 0.23 and a frontal area of 2.1 m². The coefficient was measured in a model wind tunnel at the time, so it should not be treated as directly comparable to modern vehicle figures. Record cars and experimental designs
Mercedes-Benz’s historical account gives a sense of how aerodynamic work served different goals. Its reported figures include Cd 0.24 for the W 25 streamlined record car, 0.36 for the 540 K Streamliner and 0.18 for the C 111-III. The W 125 public-road record car is listed at Cd 0.16 on that history page, while a separate Mercedes-Benz press-kit article gives 0.17; the manufacturer’s pages therefore do not agree on a single value.

Later concepts continued to explore ways of reducing drag. Mercedes-Benz reports Cd 0.19 for the 2015 Concept IAA, which used active panels and extending rear segments, and Cd 0.17 for the 2022 VISION EQXX. These are automaker-published figures for vehicles with different designs and purposes, not results from a common independent comparison.

Volkswagen describes Mission Efficiency as a concept vehicle, not a car currently established here as a purchasable production model. Its 2026 release gives Cd 0.158 and frontal area 2.08 m², and describes a teardrop-like silhouette, active cooling flaps, enclosed rear wheels and a fully clad underbody. The company says the design draws inspiration from the XL1 and ID.R. Read the manufacturer’s Mission Efficiency world-premiere release for its description and specifications.

Mercedes-Benz reports a Cd value from 0.20 and frontal area of 2.51 m² for the EQS, giving its stated effective air resistance of 0.5 m². The figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independent current ranking; the 2021 launch material also described some technical data as provisional. Mercedes-Benz called it “the world’s most aerodynamic production vehicle” at launch, a time-specific manufacturer claim rather than a conclusion that establishes its position today. What design details reduce drag?
A low-drag shape is the result of managing airflow around the whole vehicle, not simply giving it a sleek silhouette. The examples point to several practical mechanisms:

- Wheel airflow: Wheel design and enclosure affect turbulent airflow around the tires. Mercedes-Benz lists aerodynamically optimized wheel choices for the EQS, while Volkswagen describes enclosed rear wheels on Mission Efficiency.
- Cooling airflow: Air admitted for cooling can add drag. A mostly closed radiator shutter on the EQS and active cooling flaps on Mission Efficiency help control when air enters.
- Frontal area and body shape: A smaller area facing the airflow can reduce total resistance, while a tapered rear guides air away from the body. A one-bow, cab-forward layout is part of the EQS approach; Mission Efficiency uses a tapered, teardrop-like form.
- Sealing and airflow control: Closing gaps and managing the flow around body joints and components can limit unwanted turbulence. Mercedes-Benz’s overview discusses these broader aerodynamic disciplines.

When a headline or specification calls a car the most aerodynamic, check what is actually being compared. A production vehicle, a concept and a speed-record car are built for different purposes; their figures do not automatically form a fair ranking. Manufacturer-published numbers are useful specifications, but they should be attributed to the maker and read alongside the stated vehicle configuration and measurement context.

- Look for both Cd and frontal area rather than treating Cd alone as total drag.
- Check whether the vehicle is a production model, concept, prototype or record car.
- Note whether the value is manufacturer-reported and whether a test method or configuration is specified.
- Do not assume an older model-wind-tunnel result is directly comparable to a modern figure.
