Mercedes called the R-Class a “Grand Sports Tourer,” not a minivan, but its family-oriented shape paired with a naturally aspirated AMG V8 makes “V8 minivan” an understandable shorthand.
What was the Mercedes V8 minivan?
It was the Mercedes-AMG R 63, a high-performance version of the R-Class. Mercedes first previewed the idea as the near-production Vision R 63 AMG at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2005. The production model debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2006. Mercedes-Benz’s launch announcement described it as the most powerful Grand Sports Tourer in the world.
“No-one was ready” captures the contrast between a practical, six-seat body and AMG performance; it is not a documented quotation or a verified account of public reaction.
How the R 63 AMG developed
- September 2005: Mercedes-AMG showed the near-production Vision R 63 AMG at the 61st Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept announcement identified it as a high-performance R-Class.
- February 2006: Mercedes unveiled the production R 63 AMG at the Chicago Auto Show and said U.S. market launch was planned for the third quarter of 2006.
- May and July 2006: A May release for the Netherlands said the R 63 AMG would be available there from July. That Dutch-market release also listed local prices.
What powered the R 63 AMG?
Mercedes specified an AMG 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 producing 375 kW (510 hp) and 630 Nm of torque. Power went through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC transmission to permanent all-wheel drive. The factory announcement listed a 40:60 front-to-rear torque split.

Those are manufacturer specifications from the 2006 launch, not independent test results. The 6.3-litre designation follows Mercedes’ period release; some market references use 6.2 litres or describe the engine by its displacement convention.
Two wheelbases, six seats
The R 63 AMG was offered in short- and long-wheelbase versions. Mercedes listed six seats and a 250 km/h electronically limited top speed for the model. Its stated acceleration differed slightly by wheelbase:

Acceleration figures are Mercedes-Benz’s published claims. The prices are the original Netherlands-market listings, not U.S. MSRPs or present-day used-car values. The cited releases do not establish cargo-volume figures, so there is no reliable basis here for quantifying the extra packaging of the long-wheelbase version.
What else did the factory specification include?
The 2006 production announcement listed AMG sport suspension with AIRMATIC air springs and adaptive damping, AMG brakes, and 20-inch AMG wheels; 21-inch wheels were optional. The interior specification included sport seats with Nappa leather and Alcantara trim. These are period factory details, not independent assessments of ride, handling, or comfort.

The official launch and Dutch pricing announcements establish the vehicle’s specifications, launch plans, and original Dutch prices. They do not establish an official production total, reliable sales total, or a definitive reason for the model’s market outcome. Claims about how many were built or sold, or why the car did or did not succeed, need evidence beyond these releases.
