The Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 AMG: The Red Pig’s Unlikely Spa Triumph

The Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 AMG was a luxury saloon turned endurance racer. Its class win and second-place overall finish at Spa in 1971 helped put AMG on the map.

A 1,635 kg Mercedes luxury saloon was an unlikely endurance racer. In July 1971, AMG’s modified 300 SEL 6.8 turned that contrast into a headline result at the Spa 24 Hours: first in class and second overall, not the overall winner. The finish became an early reputation-making moment for the young engineering firm.

What was the Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 AMG?

Often nicknamed the “Red Pig,” the car was a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL luxury saloon transformed for competition by AMG. The central surprise was visible before it reached the results sheet: a big, imposing four-door Mercedes was taking on smaller, purpose-built-looking racing machinery in a 24-hour endurance race.

AMG enlarged the 300 SEL’s V8 from 6.3 to 6.8 litres and modified the car for racing. Mercedes-Benz’s 2024 classic-car account gives the engine’s displacement as 6,635 cc and says the conversion raised output by 131 kW (178 PS) over the 6.3-litre car. That same account describes a reduction in weight, but the car remained a substantial machine by racing standards.

How did AMG and the car reach Spa?

AMG’s roots lay in the development of Mercedes-Benz racing engines. Engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher had worked on the 300 SE racing engine at Daimler-Benz. After the company ended its motorsport activity, they continued refining performance in their spare time. Aufrecht left Mercedes-Benz in late 1966, and the pair established their engineering firm in 1967.

What happened at the 1971 Spa 24 Hours?

Drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz took the 300 SEL 6.8 to victory in its class and second place overall. The car did not win the race outright. Its result was striking precisely because it combined a class victory with an overall finish ahead of many competitors in a heavy luxury saloon.

Mercedes-Benz’s official accounts differ on the exact July race date, so the result is best identified as the 1971 Spa 24 Hours rather than assigned a specific day. The company’s US newsroom chronology records the result and drivers; a 2024 Mercedes-Benz Media article also recounts the car’s specifications and history.

Why was the Red Pig so memorable?

The 300 SEL 6.8 made an unlikely racing shape into part of its identity. Its size and weight set it apart from the expected image of an endurance racer, while its speed and Spa result made that contrast impossible to dismiss. The class win and second overall gave AMG more than a dramatic story: they provided a visible proof point for the performance work the company was building its reputation around.

PS and hp are distinct unit labels, so the figures above retain the wording used in the 2024 Media account rather than mixing conventions.

What happened to the original car?

After Spa, the car competed in other events, including the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Norisring in 1972. The Mercedes-Benz newsroom chronology records Heyer winning the “series and special touring cars over 2000 cubic centimetres displacement” class at the Norisring. It says the car’s racing career ended there and that it was later sold to Matra, substantially modified and used for high-speed aircraft-tire testing.

The original is considered lost. AMG specialists later built a replica based on a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. The replica recalls the race car, but it is not the original Spa entry; Mercedes-Benz discusses the car’s disappearance and the replica in its 2024 classic-car article.

Can you find a scale model?

Mercedes-Benz Collection listings document Minichamps miniatures in two scales. The official listings establish that these versions have been catalogued, not that either is currently in stock; availability may vary by market.

Scale What the official listing establishes Source
1:43 Red Minichamps model listing Mercedes-Benz Collections Hong Kong
1:18 Minichamps model based on the 1971 300 SEL 6.8 AMG, driven by Heyer and Schickentanz Mercedes-Benz Greece accessories listing

If comparing a model, check its scale, race livery and number, maker, packaging condition and current availability rather than assuming listings refer to the same miniature.
