The Mazdaspeed3 deserves its legend status because it gave the Mazda3 a clearly defined performance flagship: a turbocharged engine, a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive. Mazda’s own announcements establish that history. A modern successor is not announced, but the case for one is compelling: Mazda once made an enthusiast-focused Mazda3, and the name still points to a distinctive kind of performance car.
What was the Mazdaspeed3?
Mazda sold its high-performance Mazda3 under different names in different markets: Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan and Mazda3 MPS in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. These were regional names for the performance variant, not unrelated models.
Mazda’s 2006 announcements made the car’s role explicit. The company described the MPS as the Mazda3 range flagship and as a high-performance model in its Performance Series. That factory positioning—not a claim that Mazda itself called the car a “legend”—is the foundation for the name’s enthusiast reputation.
What made the original a performance flagship?
A turbocharged 2.3-liter engine
Mazda’s June 2006 Japanese-market launch specification gave the Mazdaspeed Axela a 2.3-liter MZR Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) turbo engine rated at 194 kW (264 PS) and 380 Nm. Those figures belong to that Japanese-market specification; they should not be read as a universal rating for every market’s Mazdaspeed3 or MPS.

A manual and front-wheel drive
Mazda’s 2009 technical review lists the Mazdaspeed/MPS powertrain as a 2.3-liter DISI turbo paired with a six-speed manual, and categorizes the configuration as front-wheel drive. That combination gave the car a specific character: turbocharged performance through the front wheels, with the driver choosing the gears.
The appeal is not just a number on a spec sheet. Mazda’s lineup gave the performance Mazda3 a distinct identity rather than treating it as an ordinary trim with a cosmetic package. The engine, manual transmission and driven wheels formed a coherent enthusiast proposition in a practical compact-car shape.

Mazda carried the idea into a new generation
In 2009, Mazda announced an all-new Mazda3 MPS for the Geneva International Motor Show. The company called it “Mazda3’s high performance flagship model” and said it carried forward the MZR 2.3 DISI Turbo engine. The second-generation car was therefore not merely a one-off experiment: Mazda carried the performance flagship into the next Mazda3 generation.
What happened to the performance Mazda3?
Mazda’s June 2013 announcement of the third-generation Mazda3 listed 1.5-, 2.0- and 2.5-liter gasoline engines, along with a 2.2-liter diesel, in its global engine lineup. That published lineup did not include an MPS or Mazdaspeed3 variant. The announcement establishes what Mazda listed for that launch; by itself, it does not establish the exact last production or sales date in every market.

Nor does the historical record cited here establish a planned return. Mazda’s past flagship positioning is a reason to argue for a comeback, not evidence that one is in development or has been announced.

A new performance Mazda3 could restore a role the brand once occupied: a compact, everyday car with a powertrain and driving experience chosen for enthusiasts. The strongest argument is not that Mazda should reproduce the old car unchanged. It is that the company has already shown it can make the Mazda3 a genuine performance flagship, and that a successor could reinterpret that idea for current buyers and regulations.

The details would matter. A credible modern version would need a powertrain with real character, a clear transmission strategy, and a deliberate choice about driven wheels. It would also have to balance daily practicality with emissions, fuel economy, price and availability. Those are design questions for a hypothetical successor—not specifications Mazda has announced.
That is why the Mazdaspeed3’s comeback is worth arguing for. The original offered a clear alternative to a standard compact: turbo power, a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, backed by Mazda’s own decision to call it the Mazda3 performance flagship. A modern Mazda3 with the same sense of purpose would give enthusiasts a reason to look at the name again.
