For 2026 in the U.S., the Lexus NX comes as a turbocharged gas model, a conventional hybrid that does not need to be plugged in, and a plug-in hybrid with an EPA-estimated 37 miles of electric range. That breadth is the case for calling the lineup nearly the best of all worlds—not a claim that one NX excels at everything. The right choice depends chiefly on whether you want conventional fueling, hybrid efficiency without charging, or electric driving you can use by plugging in.
How the three 2026 U.S. NX powertrains compare
The figures below are Lexus-published specifications and EPA estimates for the 2026 U.S. lineup, not independent real-world test results. Ratings can vary with configuration and driving conditions.

Which NX should you choose?
Choose the NX 350 if you want a gas-only option
The NX 350 is the straightforward choice if you do not want a hybrid system or a charging routine. Its 275 hp and Lexus-estimated 6.6-second 0–60 mph time make it the quickest of the conventional and non-plug-in options listed here. The trade-off is its 24 MPG combined EPA estimate, below the 350h’s estimates.

Choose the NX 350h for hybrid efficiency without a plug
The 350h is the practical middle ground for drivers who want a fuel-economy-focused NX but do not want to arrange home or workplace charging. It runs as a hybrid without being plugged in. For 2026, Lexus adds a front-wheel-drive version: it is rated at 40 MPG combined, compared with 39 MPG combined for AWD. The AWD version is quicker to 60 mph in Lexus’s estimates, at 7.2 seconds versus 8.2 seconds for FWD.
Choose the NX 450h+ if you can make regular use of its electric range
The plug-in hybrid offers the strongest acceleration in this comparison and can cover some journeys using electricity, but that feature is most useful if you charge consistently. Lexus estimates 37 miles of electric range and 84 MPGe combined for the 2026 U.S. model. MPGe and MPG are different measures: do not read 84 MPGe as a direct fuel-economy comparison with the 350 or 350h’s MPG figures.

The 2026 NX 450h+ includes dual-voltage charging cables for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Lexus estimates an approximately three-hour charge on 240V under ideal conditions with its standard 7 kW onboard charger. A separate Level 2 charging station is an optional home setup, not a requirement; verify compatibility and installation details for your vehicle and market.
Is the NX 450h+ plug-in worth it over the NX 350h?
It depends on whether the plug-in’s electric capability fits your routine. If you can charge at home or work and many of your regular trips fall within the PHEV’s estimated electric range, the 450h+ lets you use electricity for those drives while retaining a gasoline engine for longer journeys. If you are unlikely to charge regularly, the 350h delivers hybrid driving without a plug or charging habit to maintain.

- Consider the 450h+ when: you have dependable access to charging and value electric-only trips enough to use that capability.
- Consider the 350h when: you want a hybrid but do not want to plan around charging.
These are trade-offs based on Lexus’s stated specifications, not a claim about real-world savings. The figures here do not establish comparative ownership costs or how either model will perform in an individual driver’s conditions.

Lexus has announced that the 2027 U.S. NX lineup will consist of hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, dropping the gas-only choice. The 2026 NX 350 remains part of the U.S. lineup described above; do not treat the 2027 announcement as a current 2026 specification.

For the 2027 PHEV, Lexus estimates more than 40 miles of electric range on select grades, but says EPA ratings will be available closer to the on-sale date. The over-40-mile figure is a manufacturer estimate, not an EPA rating. Lexus also announces a revised lithium-ion battery with 8% increases in output and capacity, standard DC fast-charging capability on PHEV grades, and a power-operated charge-port door. These are announced specifications, not independently validated results. The refreshed NX was expected across global markets by the end of 2026.
Figures announced for other markets are not substitutes for U.S. ratings. Lexus’s UK/Europe release gives a provisional PHEV range of more than 60 miles, a 23 kWh battery and 10–80% DC charging in 30 minutes; those specifications are pending homologation, with UK and European introduction expected from spring 2027. They should not be presented as U.S. EPA results.

Why NX figures differ by market
Powertrain availability and ratings are specific to model year, country, test cycle and configuration. For example, Lexus Canada says all 2026 Canadian NX models have AWD and lists the 350h at 6.0 L/100 km combined and the 450h+ at 60 km of electric range. Lexus Europe lists a 350h in FWD and AWD, with market-specific output and fuel-consumption figures. Neither set should be blended with U.S. EPA ratings or treated as directly comparable to them.
When comparing NX versions or quotes from different markets, check these details first:
- Model year and country
- Whether the vehicle is FWD or AWD
- Whether the figure is MPG, MPGe, L/100 km or electric range
- Which test cycle produced the rating, such as EPA or WLTP
- Whether a range figure is an official rating or a manufacturer estimate
Lexus UK attributes the NX development philosophy to Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endo, who says the aim was to refine driving performance through electrification and provide greater charging flexibility. That is the manufacturer’s description of its approach, not proof of an objective best-in-class result.
What the “nearly best of all worlds” claim means
The 2026 U.S. lineup covers three distinct preferences: conventional gas fueling and turbo performance, hybrid efficiency without external charging, and plug-in electric driving for owners who can charge. Its strength is that choice—not evidence that every model is best for every driver. The available official figures do not establish independent real-world fuel economy, charging performance, reliability or total ownership costs across the three powertrains.
