The Lamborghini Jarama was a low-production, front-engined V12 2+2 grand tourer and the last development of Lamborghini’s front-engine 2+2 line. Its partly covered headlights and angular body explain why some people call it ugly—but that label is subjective, not an established critical consensus. Even Lamborghini’s own official sources disagree on how many Jaramas were built: one gives 327, another 328.
What was the Lamborghini Jarama?
Formally called the Jarama 400 GT, the car debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970. Lamborghini presented it as the latest evolution of its front-engine 2+2 concept, following the Islero and 400 GT. It retained the broad mechanical layout of those predecessors while giving the company’s grand touring formula a more angular 1970s shape.
The Jarama was intended to combine V12 performance with room for four. Lamborghini describes it as the last front-engined grand tourer it proposed. Its name comes from an area north of Madrid known for breeding fighting bulls, according to the company’s model history and November 11, 2020 media information.
Why is the Lamborghini Jarama considered ugly?
“Ugliest” is an opinion, not a fact established by the available official accounts. Lamborghini describes the Jarama’s lines as taut, its waistline as straight, and its rear side window as large. The headlights are partly concealed by eyelids when not in use. The company calls this an unusual but pleasant appearance; its 2020 release describes an angular silhouette in keeping with 1970s trends.

Those features help explain the divided reaction. The headlight covers interrupt the front end, while the long straight waistline and large glass area give the body a different balance from the flowing shapes many people associate with classic Italian grand tourers. That is a reading of the visible design, not evidence of a documented period consensus. The official sources do not establish that critics or buyers broadly considered it ugly.
Lamborghini credits Bertone with the design, and its 2020 media information names Marcello Gandini in connection with the silhouette. The car’s appearance is therefore best understood as a deliberate piece of 1970s design rather than a failed attempt to look like a more conventional sports car.

How many Lamborghini Jaramas were made?
They were rare in the straightforward sense that production was low, but Lamborghini’s own figures conflict. Its current model-history page lists 177 GTs and 150 GTSs, which add up to 327. The company’s November 11, 2020 media information lists 176 GTs and 152 GTSs and states a total of 328.

The conflicting totals and year ranges should be kept attributed rather than reconciled by guesswork. Lamborghini says the model is extremely difficult to find on the market because few change ownership, but these figures alone do not prove it is among the rarest cars ever built across all marques.

What were the Jarama GT and GTS differences?
The GTS arrived in 1972. Lamborghini’s official model history lists more power for it and identifies visible and cabin changes. The company’s 2020 media information adds further detail about the revisions.

Do not confuse the model-history page’s power figures in CV with the 2020 release’s figure in hp. For the GT, that release gives 350 hp and a top speed of 260 km/h (161 mph); it also describes six double-body Weber 40 DCOE carburetors. These are the release’s GT specifications, not a claim that every Jarama variant had identical output.

What powered the Jarama?
The Jarama used a longitudinally mounted, front-positioned 4-liter V12 with double overhead camshafts for each bank. Lamborghini’s model-history page gives the GT 350 CV at 7,500 rpm and the GTS 365 CV at 7,500 rpm. The company’s November 2020 release reports a 260 km/h (161 mph) top speed for the GT.
The front-engine layout mattered to the car’s role: the Jarama was not simply a mid-engined exotic with a back seat added, but the closing chapter in Lamborghini’s front-engine 2+2 grand touring approach.

Lamborghini’s model-history page credits Bertone with the design and Marazzi with body production and assembly in Varese. Its 2020 media information gives a more specific account of production arrangements: pre-series bodies were assembled by Marazzi, series models were produced at Bertone’s Grugliasco plant, and the final 100 units produced in 1972 were hybrids with Bertone body panels assembled at Marazzi. These details describe different stages and should not be collapsed into a single claim that one firm built every car in the same way.
Was the Jarama Ferruccio Lamborghini’s car?
Automobili Lamborghini says Ferruccio drove a Jarama GTS for years. The company’s model-history page notes that the car carried a Ferrara registration plate. This supports a personal connection, but does not make every Jarama a car owned or driven by Ferruccio.
