Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On a typical car battery, red marks the positive (+) terminal and black marks the negative (−) terminal. Treat that as a convention, not a guarantee: cable colors can vary or be missing. Before connecting or disconnecting anything, verify the + and − symbols on the battery case and follow your vehicle’s owner manual.
What red and black usually mean
Red commonly identifies the positive (+) terminal or cable; black commonly identifies the negative (−). The same convention is used on many jump-start clips and battery covers. AAA lists both color coding and the +/− symbols as common ways to distinguish terminals, but cautions that cables do not always match the color code. Nissan describes a red cover for positive and a black cover for negative, while Hyundai’s 2025 owner-manual jump-start instructions use red for positive and black for negative.
Look for the + and − marks molded or printed on the battery case first. Mopar’s 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual says the posts are marked positive and negative on the case and the cables must be attached to the matching posts. AAA also notes that a post-type positive terminal is usually slightly larger, but that is only a secondary clue—not a substitute for clear markings or the vehicle manual.
Which battery colors are not polarity codes?
Indicator window colors
Some batteries have a small built-in test-indicator window. Its color reports information according to that battery’s own label; it is a separate system from the red-positive/black-negative cable convention. Honda’s owner-manual excerpt tells owners to check the window and read the battery label for the meaning of its colors. There is no universal cross-brand color key established here, so do not assume a particular window color means the same thing on every battery.
#1 Best Overall
- High density negative paste, improves performance and increases battery life
- Enhanced life alloy or Silver Calcium stamped alloy increases cycle life and improves performance
- Calcium lead positive grid, maximizes conductivity and allows for low resistance
- Robust envelope separator with puncture resistant back, allows for increased acid circulation and prevents shorts. Improved acid circulation, helps the battery to remain cool, and extend battery life
- Vent cap design that resists acid leakage
White or yellowish deposits
White or yellowish powder around a terminal is described by Honda as corrosion, not as a sign of positive or negative polarity. Corrosion may warrant cleaning or inspection, but its color does not tell you which post is which.
How to identify a terminal before working on the battery
- Find the battery’s + and − marks. Check the case near each post rather than relying on cable color or terminal position.
- Match the cable or clamp to the marked post. Connect positive to positive and negative to negative; do not guess if the marks or connections are unclear.
- Check the owner manual for the specific task. Jump-starting and battery removal can have vehicle-specific instructions. The manual takes priority over a general color convention.
- Stop if polarity remains uncertain. Do not attach clamps based only on wire color, post size, or assumptions about which side of the battery is positive. Have the markings clarified before proceeding.
For charger connections, Victron likewise labels clips red/positive and black/negative but instructs users to check battery-post polarity and distinguishes negative-grounded from positive-grounded vehicles. Familiar colors are helpful cues, not a universal substitute for checking the battery and vehicle instructions.

- ✅Batter dimensions: 10.75" L x 6.81" W x 8.98" H, Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). ✅Please ensure to verify the dimensions and terminal position before making a purchase to guarantee compatibility with your vehicle to avoid any fitment issues.
- With a 70AH capacity and 710 cold cranking amps (CCA). Provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage:12V. Charging Voltage:14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current:0~21A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
Disconnecting, jump-starting, and corrosion safety
Follow the procedure in your own vehicle’s manual. In the cited Honda maintenance instructions, the direction is: “Always disconnect the negative (−) cable first and reconnect it last.” That sequence is not a reason to skip the manual for another vehicle or for a different procedure.
Mopar warns that battery acid is corrosive and battery gas is flammable and explosive. Keep flames and sparks away, and do not allow clamps to touch. If terminals are corroded, AAA describes cleaning with baking soda and water and using a terminal cleaning tool or wire brush; Nissan also describes a wire brush for terminals and clamps. Cleaning is maintenance—it does not identify polarity.
