Contemporary reports put its top speed at either 18 mph or about 20 mph, depending on the source; neither figure is presented as an independently verified speed test.
What was the full-size LEGO car?
Australian entrepreneur Steve Sammartino and Romanian builder Raul Oaida created the Super Awesome Micro Project as a functioning hot-rod-style vehicle, not as a retail LEGO model. ABC News and Reuters reporting put the build at about 500,000 LEGO pieces; WIRED described it as using more than 500,000. ABC News and Reuters, republished by Al Jazeera covered the project in 2013.
The often-used “world’s first” description appears in contemporary coverage, but the available reporting does not establish independent record verification. It is more precise to describe it as a reported first than as a certified record.
How fast did the LEGO car go?
Contemporary reports give slightly different top-speed figures. WIRED reported 18 mph, while Reuters/Al Jazeera reported 30 km/h, roughly 20 mph. These should be treated as reported figures, not as the result of a documented independent test. WIRED’s 2013 report quoted Sammartino saying the team drove slowly because they worried about a “Lego explosion.”

How did its 256-piston engine work?
The car used four orbital engines with 256 LEGO pistons in total. Compressed air powered the pistons, providing propulsion without a conventional fuel-burning engine. ABC News reported the engine configuration and air-powered design in 2013: ABC News on the LEGO car.
The “256-cylinder” wording sometimes used in headlines is misleading: the reported figure is 256 pistons across four engines, not 256 conventional cylinders. The sources describe an unusual pneumatic LEGO mechanism, not an ordinary automotive engine.

Was the car made entirely of LEGO?
No. It was built almost entirely from LEGO elements, but it also relied on ordinary vehicle and structural components. ABC News quotes Sammartino identifying load-bearing struts and wheels among the non-LEGO parts; Reuters/Al Jazeera also mentions wheels, tires, gauges, and structural gear. The exact phrasing varies across reports, so the accurate summary is “largely LEGO,” not “every part was LEGO.”
Who built it, and how long did the project take?
Sammartino proposed and promoted the project, while Oaida is credited with its technical design and construction. Reuters/Al Jazeera reported that 40 funders contributed between A$500 and A$1,000 each, that the reported project cost was about $18,000, and that completion took 20 months. Those are figures reported by that article, not an audited budget.

Sammartino described the aim to ABC News as: “It’s really just a technical experiment to show what’s possible in a connected world.” The project joined a promoter and a technical builder through a crowdfunding effort, using the car as a demonstration of collaborative engineering.

The reporting establishes this as a one-off project, not an official LEGO retail set or a documented replica kit. LEGO Technic sets are a separate category for building mechanical models; LEGO’s product material does not identify a set that reproduces this car. LEGO Technic is a place to explore that broader category, not a claim that an official replica is available.
