The SSC Ultimate Aero TT is the strongest answer to the question of which production car first exceeded 1,000 mechanical horsepower: it reportedly entered production in late 2006 with 1,180 hp. The familiar alternative, the Bugatti Veyron, arrived earlier—but its celebrated 1,001 figure was in metric horsepower (PS), equivalent to about 987 mechanical hp. The distinction is about units, not whether either car deserves the loosely used label “hypercar.”
Why the answer depends on what “1,000 horsepower” means
Horsepower figures can use different units. Mechanical horsepower (hp), commonly used in the United States, is slightly larger than metric horsepower (PS). Bugatti rated the original Veyron at 1,001 PS; that converts to approximately 987 mechanical hp, according to SlashGear’s comparison. So the Veyron crossed 1,000 PS, but not the specific threshold of 1,000 mechanical hp.
SlashGear reports that the SSC Ultimate Aero TT entered production in late 2006 with an initial 1,180 hp. It later cites 1,183 hp for the car by the time of its 2007 speed record. On that account, the SSC was the first production car to exceed 1,000 mechanical hp.
The exact SSC production date and output should be treated as reported figures rather than independently confirmed manufacturer specifications: SlashGear attributes them to an archived SSC website, and the original archive is not available among the cited sources. SlashGear’s June 19, 2026 account is the source for those claims.

How the Veyron and Ultimate Aero TT compare
| Car | Power and unit | Production timing | Engine layout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bugatti Veyron 16.4 | 1,001 PS, approximately 987 mechanical hp | Bugatti says production began in September 2005 | 8.0-litre W16 with four turbochargers |
| SSC Ultimate Aero TT | 1,180 hp initially reported; 1,183 hp later reported | Reported to have entered production in late 2006 | Twin-turbo V8, as reported by SlashGear |
The comparison uses Bugatti’s figures for the Veyron and SlashGear’s report for the SSC. The two SSC outputs refer to different points in the car’s reported history, not competing conversions of the same unit.
The Veyron’s achievement—and why it is often named first
The Veyron was a landmark production car even though its 1,001 PS rating falls short of 1,000 mechanical hp. Bugatti says the limited series-production run was decided in 2001 and production began in September 2005. Its engineering brief included exceeding 400 km/h, and Bugatti reports a 407 km/h top speed at launch.

Bugatti describes the Veyron’s 8.0-litre W16 as using four turbochargers and ten radiators. The engine produced 1,001 PS at 6,000 rpm and 1,250 Nm of torque between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm. The car also used permanent all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Bugatti reports a 0–100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds.
Those details help explain why the Veyron is often treated as the starting point of the modern hypercar era. In Bugatti’s account, the 407 km/h record was achieved in April 2005, before series production began. The Veyron came earlier than the SSC in production chronology; the SSC takes the narrower horsepower distinction because its reported output exceeded 1,000 mechanical hp.

Was the SSC Ultimate Aero TT “not a hypercar”?
That part of the headline is not a reliable dividing line. “Hypercar” is a category label, not a horsepower unit, and the cited sources apply the term to both cars. Bugatti calls the Veyron a “hyper sports car” and describes it as the world’s first in 2005; SlashGear also calls the Ultimate Aero TT a hypercar.
Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann said of the Veyron: “With the Veyron 16.4, Bugatti not only unveiled what can be called the world’s first hyper sports car in 2005, but also achieved an unbelievable speed record.” That helps explain the Veyron’s place in the story, but it does not establish a formal definition that excludes the SSC.
