The first confirmed individual motorcycle to sell at auction for more than US$1 million was a 1915 Cyclone V-Twin. Mecum sold it in Las Vegas on February 1, 2025, for a reported US$1,320,000, according to New Atlas and The Vintagent. The milestone is about a completed, confirmed auction sale—not a high bid, asking price, or transaction that later fell through.

What sold, and when?

The motorcycle was a 1915 Cyclone V-Twin, sold at Mecum’s Las Vegas auction on February 1, 2025. New Atlas reported the final price as US$1,320,000; The Vintagent also identified it as the first confirmed million-dollar motorcycle auction sale. The available reporting does not establish whether that figure includes the buyer’s premium, so it is best treated as the reported price rather than a fully specified settlement figure.

The Cyclone came from the collection of Urban S. Hirsch III. New Atlas reported that another motorcycle from the collection, a 1938 Crocker Twin, sold at the same Mecum auction for US$880,000.

Why “sold” matters

A record claim depends on the transaction being completed. An estimate, advertised price, bid, or announced deal that fails to close does not establish an auction sale.

  • Captain America chopper: New Atlas reported a price of US$1.35 million but said the sale fell through. That figure is not a completed auction result.
  • Ducati 750 Imola: A 2024 auction did not reach its US$650,000 reserve. The owner’s account describes a high bid below reserve, not a sale. See Hagerty UK’s account.
  • Ivan Mauger speedway collection: The Vintagent notes that a 2016 sale grouped several motorcycles, trophies, and memorabilia. Its total is not directly comparable with the price of one motorcycle sold as an individual lot.

These distinctions explain why the Cyclone—not the higher reported but failed Captain America deal, or the unsold Ducati—counts as the first confirmed individual motorcycle auction sale above US$1 million.

How the reported prices compare

New Atlas reported these individual auction figures and outcomes. They are useful context, not an independently audited all-time ranking.

Motorcycle or lot Reported result Outcome
1915 Cyclone V-Twin US$1,320,000 Sold at Mecum, Las Vegas, February 1, 2025
1908 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank” US$935,000 Reported earlier auction sale
1951 Vincent Black Lightning US$929,000 Reported earlier auction sale
1938 Crocker Twin US$880,000 Sold at the same Mecum auction as the Cyclone
Captain America chopper US$1.35 million Reported price; sale fell through
Ducati 750 Imola US$650,000 reserve Did not meet reserve in 2024; not sold

Each figure is reported by New Atlas, except the Ducati reserve outcome, which is also described by the owner in the Hagerty UK account. The reports do not specify a consistent buyer’s-premium convention across these results.

Is the Cyclone still the most expensive motorcycle sold at auction?

That claim needs a date and a currency qualification. In an update, New Atlas reported that Bonhams sold a 1965 MV Agusta 500 Grand Prix machine on April 25, 2026, for US$1,304,773. By the US-dollar amounts as reported, that is below the Cyclone’s US$1,320,000 result. However, New Atlas cautions that comparisons can depend on currency conversion. The reported figures alone therefore do not support an unqualified, timeless record claim across currencies.

The defensible milestone is narrower and clear: the Cyclone was reported as the first confirmed individual motorcycle auction sale above US$1 million, at Mecum in Las Vegas on February 1, 2025. The underlying reports are editorial coverage rather than an auction-house settlement record, and they do not resolve the buyer’s-premium question.
