The Kinner is a Finnish-built, four-wheel pedal vehicle with room for two people, electric assistance and styling inspired by classic sports cars. Both occupants can pedal, but it is not a conventional car: the early version described by a reviewer has an open cockpit and bicycle-derived components, with only partial weather protection. Its reported specifications changed as the project moved from prototype toward production, so dated figures should not be mistaken for a confirmed current model.
What is the Kinner?
Designer and builder Ari-Jukka Luomaranta developed the Kinner-Car in Kokkola, Finland. Yle’s September 2024 report describes a classic-sports-car-inspired composite body on an aluminium frame, powered by the riders with electric assistance. The “classic car” comparison is about its styling and presentation, not its vehicle category or power source: occupants pedal it, and the design is closer to an open, four-wheel velomobile than a conventional automobile.
The layout is side by side rather than the usual front-to-back tandem arrangement. RECUMBENT.news, reporting on an early demo ride in August 2023, says each occupant has an independent crank and can pedal. The source describes upright bucket-style seats, adjustable seat and crank positions, suspension, four bicycle-sized wheels and front wheels that tilt as the vehicle steers. These are observations of an early vehicle, not a final production specification.
What are the reported specifications?
Published figures capture different points in development. The dimensions below were reported for the prototype, not verified as current production measurements.

The different motor reports are dated development snapshots. They do not establish that one configuration replaced another across every Kinner, or confirm the final specification of a vehicle available to order.
How fast is the electric assistance?
Yle reported two assistance configurations in September 2024: one assisting up to 25 km/h and a more powerful speed-pedelec version assisting up to 45 km/h. Those figures describe the assistance limits in Yle’s account, not a verified top speed for every version or a guarantee of the vehicle’s speed in use.

Yle said the 45 km/h version would be insured as a moped in Finland and require at least a moped licence under the rules it described at the time. That is Finnish context from September 2024, not legal advice for other countries or confirmation of current rules. Check the applicable local classification, licence, insurance and equipment requirements before riding. Yle’s reported test ride included a helmet; a neutral bicycle helmet suggestion may be useful for prospective riders, but that report does not establish which helmet is sufficient or legally required in any particular jurisdiction.
Is it enclosed or suitable for rain?
No. RECUMBENT.news characterizes the 2023 demo as open-cockpit or cabriolet-like rather than fully enclosed. Its hood shelters the legs from wind and rain, but the reviewer said riders still need ordinary rainwear and warm accessories for the upper body. It should not be treated as a fully weatherproof car.

The reviewer, who was 177 cm tall, found the riding position comfortable on that test ride and said taller riders might need the seat moved fully back and the crank position adjusted. That is one person’s experience with an early vehicle, not broad fit testing. The same review noted good visibility and a pleasant side-by-side ride, alongside prototype noise and refinements still in progress.
What did the Kinner cost, and can you buy one now?
Yle reported in September 2024 that locally assembled Kinner-Cars started at €18,000 at the factory, attributing the cost to local production and handwork. New Atlas reported an expected €15,000 price in October 2021; that was an earlier forecast, not a current quote.

The cited reports do not verify current stock, ordering terms, delivery times, final production configuration or present retail price. Contact the maker directly for current purchase information and confirm what is included in any quoted configuration. The 2023 review described early production plans and vehicles being completed, while Yle’s 2024 account described local assembly around Kokkola; neither establishes availability today.

Yle’s historical archive reports that a two-seat, three-wheel pedal vehicle called a kinneri was built in a Partaharju camp workshop and featured in summer 1949. The archive describes it as over two metres long and about 60 kg, and says an amphibious version could travel on land and water. This offers historical context for the name, but does not establish that the modern Kinner is a continuation of that vehicle.
