The Featherweight Porsche 909 Bergspyder: Porsche’s 1968 Hillclimb Experiment

Built for 1968 hillclimbs, the Porsche 909 Bergspyder pursued minimum mass with an aluminium frame, lightweight components and a nitrogen-pressurized titanium fuel tank.

The Porsche 909 Bergspyder was a purpose-built 1968 hillclimb racer designed around one priority: minimum weight. Porsche says the race-ready car weighed 384 kg with oil and fuel, while a later Porsche feature rounds it to about 400 kg. Its aluminium-and-titanium construction and unusual nitrogen-pressurized spherical fuel tank helped shed mass, but the project had a brief competition life: Porsche built two cars, and the 909 recorded second- and third-place finishes before the company turned its attention to sports-car racing and Le Mans.

What was the Porsche 909 Bergspyder?

The 909 was Porsche’s 1968 answer to the demands of European Hillclimb Championship competition. On steep courses with rapid changes of direction, low mass could make a car more responsive and easier to accelerate uphill. The 909 was an experimental competition car, not a production model. Porsche’s 2023 history calls it the lightest-ever Porsche; its 2026 feature describes it as the lightest Porsche racing car built.

Porsche gives the 909’s race-ready weight as 384 kg, including oil and fuel. A 2026 Porsche Newsroom feature rounds the figure to about 400 kg. These are different levels of precision, not evidence of two distinct specifications: the more specific figure comes from Porsche’s Spyder history, while the newer feature uses an approximate headline figure.

How did Porsche make it so light?

The 909 carried forward lightweight components and ideas from the 910/8, but combined them in a car built for the hillclimb task. Porsche’s account describes an aluminium spaceframe and a 10 kg glass-fibre-reinforced plastic body with an aluminium frame. The materials extended into the suspension, engine and brakes.

Brakes Beryllium brake discs

The result was not simply a lightweight body mounted on an otherwise conventional car. Porsche pursued mass savings across the structure and mechanical components, while also experimenting with the way fuel reached the engine.

Why did the 909 use a spherical titanium fuel tank?

The tank was a pressurized fuel system intended to eliminate the fuel lift pump. Porsche says its spherical pressure vessel was made from 0.8 mm titanium and enclosed a rubber bladder that held the gasoline. Nitrogen was pumped into the space between the bladder and the outer shell at approximately 15 bar. Pressure on the bladder pushed fuel through a hose to the mechanical fuel-injection pump. Removing the lift pump saved up to 7 kg, according to Porsche.

  1. Fuel sits inside the bladder: The rubber bladder holds the gasoline within the spherical tank.
  2. Nitrogen pressurizes the space around it: The gas occupies the gap between the bladder and the thin titanium shell.
  3. Pressure feeds the injection system: The compressed nitrogen squeezes the bladder, sending fuel through a hose to the mechanical injection pump without a separate lift pump.

In Porsche’s account, the sphere sat beside the engine. The design illustrates the car’s central trade-off: a highly unusual component could be worthwhile if it reduced overall mass, even if it added complexity. Porsche gives the maximum saving from deleting the lift pump as “up to 7 kg,” not a fixed weight saving for every operating condition.

What engine and performance figures did Porsche give?

The 909 used a 2.0-litre Type 771 flat-eight rated at 275 PS. Porsche’s 2023 Spyder history reports 0–100 km/h in 2.4 seconds. Its 2026 spherical-tank feature gives 2.5 seconds and says the car could reach up to 250 km/h depending on gearing.

0–100 km/h 2.5 seconds 2026 Porsche Newsroom feature
Maximum speed Up to 250 km/h 2026 Porsche Newsroom feature; depends on gearing

Porsche’s two acceleration figures differ by a tenth of a second across the cited articles. The available accounts do not explain the difference, so neither should be treated as a more definitive tested result. The maximum speed is explicitly gearing-dependent.

How was the 909 laid out?

Porsche describes the car as a weight-balance experiment as well as a material-savings exercise. The differential was at the rear, while the seat, engine and five-speed transmission were far forward; the driver’s feet sat ahead of the front axle. The spherical tank was placed beside the engine.

Porsche says the weight-distribution ideas first explored in the 909 influenced the later 908/3, which performed well on twisty circuits. That is Porsche’s account of an influence, not a claim that the 909 alone caused the later car’s performance.

What happened in competition?

The 909’s record was short. Porsche reports two 1968 hillclimb outings and second- and third-place results. At Gaisberg on 8 September, the European Hill Climb Championship title was nearly secured for Porsche after five previous wins by the 910/8. The 909’s engine ran too rich and misfired, and Rolf Stommelen finished third.

At Mount Ventoux, Porsche combined the spherical tank with a petrol pump, and Stommelen took second. Porsche says the car’s time ended after its second run in the final at Ventoux. The company then withdrew from the European hillclimb championship to focus resources on the World Sportscar Championship and Le Mans. Porsche’s summary confirms two 1968 championship results, second and third; it does not support portraying the 909 as a title-winning or long-running program.

How many Porsche 909s were built?

Porsche says it built two 909 Bergspyders. Both belonged to the brief 1968 hillclimb program; the available Porsche accounts do not establish an extended competition campaign beyond the two reported outings.
