The Evolution of the Nissan GT-R: From Skyline Racer to R35

From the 1969 Skyline 2000GT-R to the final R35 in 2025, the GT-R’s story spans touring-car victories, changing model identities and a lasting motorsport legacy.

The Nissan GT-R began in 1969 as a race-minded Skyline and ended its R35 production run in August 2025. Along the way, it built its reputation through domestic touring-car competition, returned as the R32 in 1989, and eventually became a distinct Nissan model without the Skyline name. Nissan’s own heritage records provide the milestones below; specifications refer to the specific model years identified, not every GT-R in a generation.

1969: The first Skyline GT-R

Nissan introduced the four-door Skyline 2000GT-R (PGC10) in February 1969, after the merger with Prince Motors. The car was conceived as a high-performance touring racer, drawing on technology from the R380 prototype. Its S20 engine was a 1,989 cc DOHC inline-six rated at 160 PS at 7,000 rpm, according to Nissan’s 1969 Skyline 2000GT-R heritage entry. The car made its racing debut at the JAF Grand Prix in May 1969 and won.

Nissan’s Heritage Stories account calls it the first GT-R and says the car’s “DNA” continues in the company’s current technology flagship. That is Nissan’s own description of its lineage, rather than an independent technical assessment. The company says the early GT-R recorded 52 domestic touring-car victories before its works team withdrew in October 1972. A separate Nissan account dates the 50th win to March 20, 1972. These are manufacturer-reported historical totals.

From four-door sedan to hardtop

In 1970, Nissan turned the four-door PGC10 into the two-door KPGC10 hardtop. Nissan says the wheelbase was shortened by 70 mm and the car made lighter; it retained the S20 engine. The shift made the GT-R’s competition purpose more visible, while keeping the same basic powertrain identity.

The Skyline GT-R returns with the R32

After the GT-R hiatus, Nissan relaunched the Skyline GT-R with the R32 in August 1989. The generation’s most decisive chapter was on track: Nissan says it won all 29 rounds of Japan’s Group A touring-car championship across four seasons, from 1990 through 1993. That unbroken record restored the GT-R name as a force in touring-car racing and made competition central to the modern Skyline GT-R story.

The 29-for-29 figure is Nissan’s account of the Japanese championship, not a claim about every race series or every competition entered by R32-based cars.

R33: a broader grand-touring role

Nissan describes the R33 Skyline as larger than the R32 and positioned as a mainstream grand-touring car focused on driving pleasure. That framing suggests an evolution beyond a narrow race-homologation identity, even as the GT-R name remained tied to performance.

Nissan’s heritage archive reports that an R33 factory test car, chassis 000055, completed the Nürburgring in 7:59.887, which the company described as 21 seconds faster than its cited R32 test result. This is Nissan’s comparison of factory test-car results; it should not be read as an independently certified production-car record or as a directly comparable result from a standardized public test.

R34 and the end of the Skyline name

The R34 was the last Skyline GT-R generation. Nissan records examples from 2000 and 2002 in its heritage archive, and says GT-R production ceased when R34 production ended in 2002. The next GT-R appeared in 2007 under a different name: Nissan GT-R, without “Skyline.”

Nissan’s company history places a 2001 concept and a 2005 prototype before the production car’s 2007 launch. The change marked a break in model identity, not the abandonment of the GT-R badge: the name continued on a car spun off from Skyline into its own Nissan line.

R35: a distinct Nissan GT-R

The R35 launched in 2007 as the Nissan GT-R. Nissan’s heritage entry for that launch model lists a 3,799 cc twin-turbo V6, the VR38DETT, rated at 480 PS (353 kW). It paired that engine with an independent transaxle four-wheel-drive layout and a dual-clutch transmission mounted at the rear. Those figures describe the 2007 model; R35 specifications changed through later editions and updates.

The R35 carried the GT-R name beyond the Skyline generations and became the longest-running chapter in this lineage. In an August 26, 2025 report, Nissan said production was drawing to a close that month; the final unit left the Tochigi plant in August 2025. That establishes the end of R35 production, but does not by itself establish the status or timing of a successor.

How the GT-R’s identity changed

Era Model identity and role Motorsport or engineering marker
1969–1972 Skyline 2000GT-R; touring-race car PGC10 and KPGC10 used the 1,989 cc S20 inline-six; Nissan reports 52 domestic touring-car victories before the works-team withdrawal.
1989–1993 and after Skyline GT-R returns with the R32 Nissan reports 29 wins in 29 Japanese Group A championship rounds from 1990 through 1993.
R33 Larger Skyline GT-R with a grand-touring emphasis Nissan reports a 7:59.887 Nürburgring time for factory test car 000055.
R34, ending 2002 Final Skyline GT-R generation Nissan says GT-R production paused after R34 production ended.
R35, launched 2007; production ended 2025 Nissan GT-R, no longer named Skyline The 2007 launch model had a 3,799 cc twin-turbo V6 and rear-mounted dual-clutch transaxle.

The through-line is the GT-R’s competition-shaped identity; what changed was the platform and the way Nissan positioned the car. It began as a Skyline developed for touring-car success, returned as a dominant Group A contender, broadened into grand-touring territory, and ultimately became a standalone Nissan model. Nissan’s heritage archive and company history document that progression, while the R35’s August 2025 production end closes the latest confirmed chapter.
