Gran Turismo 7 brings racing together with tuning and customization, and continues to add content after launch.

What order did the Gran Turismo games come out?
1997–1999: Establishing the real-car formula
Gran Turismo (1997) launched on the original PlayStation. The official history describes its identity as “The Real Driving Simulator” and says it featured more than 100 cars from real manufacturers. That combination—recognizable production cars and a realistic driving context—became the series’ defining promise.

Gran Turismo 2 (1999) enlarged the collecting side of the formula. The official history lists 500 car models and 600 graded variations, along with dirt tracks and Laguna Seca. The shift was not just toward more cars: the game broadened the kinds of driving and track experiences available.
2001–2004: The PlayStation 2 era
Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (2001) and Gran Turismo 4 (2004) were the major numbered releases of this period. The official timeline also records other releases between them. Rather than reducing these games to a single hardware claim, it is useful to see this era as the continuation of the series’ expanding car-and-racing catalogue.
2009–2013: Portable play and new concepts
Gran Turismo for PSP (2009) brought the series to a handheld system. The official history lists more than 800 car models and frames the experience around “Drive, Collect, Trade,” emphasizing collecting and portable access.

Gran Turismo 5 (2010) followed, then Gran Turismo 6 (2013). The official history highlights GT6’s Vision Gran Turismo project, through which manufacturers created concept cars for the game. That widened Gran Turismo’s car culture beyond production models and historical racing machinery into imagined future designs.
2017: Online competition becomes a central identity
Gran Turismo Sport (2017) was described by the official history as a dedicated online title. It introduced Sport Mode and marked the beginning of official Gran Turismo competition. This was a meaningful change in emphasis: competition and connectivity were no longer merely supporting features around a mostly solo car-collecting experience.
2022 onward: Gran Turismo 7 and ongoing updates
Gran Turismo 7 (2022) was presented as a 25th-anniversary entry spanning racing, tuning, and customization. The official history also notes GT Sophy, the series’ AI racing project. GT7 is still receiving content: its official product page records the Spec III update on December 4, 2025, with eight new cars, two real-world circuits, a Data Logger, enhanced Weekly Challenges, and new Café Menus.
What is the latest Gran Turismo game?
Gran Turismo 7 is the current series entry listed by Gran Turismo. The official catalog lists it for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The latest dated update named on the official product page is Spec III, released December 4, 2025; current store editions and physical or digital availability can vary, so check the listing for the platform and format you want.
How many copies has Gran Turismo sold?
The Gran Turismo series passed 100 million cumulative worldwide units sold as of June 25, 2025, according to the official milestone announcement published September 24, 2025. This is a franchise-wide unit-sales total, not a count of unique players, and the official sources do not provide a comparable sales table for each individual game.

The official history also lists earlier cumulative milestones: 50 million units by 2008 and 70 million by 2013. A separate official announcement reported more than 80 million copies worldwide as of April 2018. These dated totals show the franchise’s growth, but they should not be read as annual sales or per-game rankings.

From a driving promise to a wider car-culture package
The first game’s identity was built around driving real manufacturers’ cars in a realistic context. GT2’s much larger catalogue and expanded track types made discovery and variety a bigger part of the experience. GT6’s Vision Gran Turismo cars then added manufacturer-designed concepts, while GT7 explicitly combines racing with tuning and customization.
From collecting and solo play to organized online racing
Collecting has been a recurring thread, visible from the original game through PSP’s “Drive, Collect, Trade” emphasis. Gran Turismo Sport marked a distinct turn toward online competition with Sport Mode and official competition. Players looking for the series’ clearest online-first chapter should distinguish Sport’s stated focus from GT7’s broader mix of racing and car-culture activities.

How to choose a Gran Turismo era
- For the series’ original identity: start with the 1997 game’s real-car and realistic-driving premise.
- For breadth and collecting: Gran Turismo 2 and the PSP entry are notable for their large stated car selections.
- For official online competition: Gran Turismo Sport is the entry the official history specifically associates with Sport Mode and the beginning of official competition.
- For the current, evolving game: Gran Turismo 7 is the latest entry and includes ongoing updates documented by its product page.
Across those shifts, the series’ evolution is less a clean replacement of one idea by another than an accumulation: real cars and driving remain the anchor, while collecting, concepts, online racing, and continuing updates have each expanded what a Gran Turismo game can be.
