The Subaru Impreza WRX STI grew from a rally-linked performance version of the Impreza into a distinct WRX model. Its story is rooted in Subaru’s World Rally Championship (WRC) program, but road cars, competition cars and market-specific versions are not interchangeable. The key milestones are the Impreza’s 1993 WRC debut, the WRX STI’s arrival in the Impreza series in 1994, three consecutive manufacturers’ titles from 1995 to 1997, and the WRX’s eventual separation from the Impreza name in some markets.
How Subaru’s rally program set the stage
Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru’s motorsport and performance division, was founded in 1988. Subaru began full-scale WRC participation in 1990. The Impreza entered the championship in 1993, following the model’s market launch in November 1992, according to Subaru’s heritage timeline. STI’s corporate history and Subaru’s heritage timeline place those milestones in the context of the company’s competition program.
Subaru’s official timeline says the WRX STI was added to the Impreza series in January 1994. STI’s history separately records that an Impreza STI version was built and sold to order that year. The names describe related but distinct things: the Impreza was the underlying model line, the WRX STI was its high-performance road-car variant, and Subaru’s WRC entries were competition cars built for rallying.
What made the WRX STI rally-bred
The “rally-bred” description comes from the model’s close association with Subaru’s WRC effort and the timing of the STI’s arrival—not from the idea that every road-going WRX STI was a rally car. Subaru and STI won the WRC manufacturers’ championship in 1995, 1996 and 1997. STI describes the 1997 result as the first time a Japanese car won three consecutive manufacturers’ championships. By 2002, STI recorded 35 total WRC wins.

These are competition milestones, not road-car specifications. A championship-winning rally car and a production WRX STI may share a name, visual cues or engineering influences, but the cited company histories do not establish a single set of specifications that applies to every road-car generation or market. The rally record explains the badge’s reputation; it should not be read as a claim that a showroom car was identical to a WRC entry.
The 22B STI: a limited anniversary special
Released in 1998 for Subaru’s anniversary, the 22B STI is among the most closely associated road cars with the rally era. STI calls it a replica version of the 1997 World Rally Car and reports that 400 limited-edition units sold out immediately after announcement. That description links the special to the competition car; it does not make the 22B itself a WRC entry.

Subaru Australia describes the 22B as having a 2.2-litre engine and widebody based on the WRC-winning rally car. It reports 425 examples produced, including 24 for export outside Japan and five for Australia. Those figures differ from STI’s 400-unit count, and the sources do not explain the difference in scope. They should therefore remain separately attributed rather than combined into one definitive production total. Subaru Australia’s model history gives its regional account.
How the WRX STI evolved in Australia
Model-generation dates vary by market. Subaru Australia provides a documented Australian-market chronology: the second-generation STI became an ongoing WRX-range variant in December 2001, the third generation launched in February 2008, and the fourth generation launched in April 2014. These dates describe Australia and should not be treated as universal launch dates.

Second generation: an established WRX-range variant
In Subaru Australia’s account, December 2001 marks the second-generation STI’s move into the WRX range as an ongoing variant. That shift is a useful point in the road-car story, separate from the earlier rally titles that helped establish the name.
Third generation: a new Australian-market launch
Subaru Australia dates the third-generation STI’s launch to February 2008. The company’s history also records 2008 as the year Subaru and STI ended WRC participation. The two events mark different changes: one in the Australian road-car chronology, the other in Subaru’s works rally program.

Fourth generation: the Impreza name falls away
For the fourth-generation car, launched in Australia in April 2014, Subaru Australia says the Impreza name was no longer used. The Impreza and WRX followed separate development paths in that market. This is a naming and product-line distinction, not evidence that every country made the transition at the same time.

Subaru and STI ended WRC participation in 2008, according to STI’s history. The company’s later motorsport record includes endurance racing rather than a return to the WRC: STI reports six total victories at the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race by 2024. That result belongs to a different event and should not be confused with Subaru’s rally championship record.
