The DMS Disaster at Mobileye and Nvidia: What the 2021 Critique Got Right—and What Changed

Colin Barnden’s 2021 DMS warning focused on complete sensing and system integration, not algorithms alone. Here’s what the critique said—and how Mobileye’s 2026 announcement changes its context.

“The DMS Disaster at Mobileye and Nvidia” was Colin Barnden’s February 3, 2021 opinion article, not a test finding or settled industry verdict. His core warning was that driver monitoring systems (DMS) cannot be judged by software demonstrations alone: they depend on the camera and infrared sensing chain, algorithms, representative training data, and the way a vehicle acts on driver-state signals. Mobileye’s March 2026 announcement of a future DMS production program changes the historical picture, but it does not establish a current supplier ranking or prove that production has begun.

What “The DMS Disaster” meant

Colin Barnden, lead analyst at Semicast Research and an EE Times contributing writer, published “The DMS Disaster at Mobileye and Nvidia” on February 3, 2021. The word “disaster” was his forecast and argumentative framing. The article compared public announcements and promotional material; it did not report controlled, common-condition tests of Mobileye and NVIDIA systems.

Barnden’s concern was strategic as well as technical: he argued that both companies were emphasizing automated-driving or software-centric efforts while underestimating DMS. In his reading, NVIDIA’s demonstration video suggested an approach focused on software and appeared to cover a limited range of driver behaviors. That was his interpretation of promotional material, not a measured finding about the performance of every NVIDIA DMS configuration.

Why DMS is more than an algorithm

A DMS estimates a driver’s state from sensor data, then makes that information usable within the vehicle. Barnden’s technical argument was that an algorithm cannot establish system capability on its own. The complete chain includes sensing the driver reliably, interpreting the resulting signals, and deciding how those signals should affect vehicle behavior.

  • FEATURES WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY INCLUDED: Experience peace of mind with this front and rear car dash cam. It comes with a free 128GB microSD card and offers advanced features such as an f1.5 aperture, motion detection, G-sensor, seamless loop recording, emergency video lock, screen saver, live speed and compass direction, voice guidance, ring of threads for optional CPL filter, a built-in supercapacitor for extended product life, support for up to 1TB microSD cards, and many more.
  • Optics and illumination: Camera placement, lens and optical design, image-sensor characteristics, and infrared illumination affect what the system can see.
  • Image processing and algorithms: Software must extract useful signals from the captured images and identify relevant driver states.
  • Training data: Data should represent the conditions and people the system is expected to encounter. A large data total alone does not prove coverage or performance.
  • Vehicle integration and human factors: Warnings and driver-assistance responses need to make sense in context. A state estimate is not useful simply because it can be generated.

Barnden put particular weight on data, writing: “For DMS, the company with the most training data has the greatest competitive advantage — Amazon, Facebook and Google teach us that.” This was his assertion, not a conclusion from a cited comparative study. More data may be valuable, but the relevant questions include how it was collected, whether it reflects real driving conditions, and how well it supports the intended system.

What the 2021 criticism said about each company

NVIDIA: software demonstrations did not answer system questions

Barnden argued that NVIDIA’s presentation did not show enough to establish a complete DMS. His concerns included infrared optical design, image-sensor performance, integration of the sensor-to-algorithm signal chain, training data captured in representative conditions, and the use of driver-state signals in vehicle behavior. Those are dimensions for evaluation, not evidence that NVIDIA systems failed a particular test.

Mobileye: an EyeQ4-era concern, not a timeless verdict

In a February 10 follow-up, “We Really Need to Talk about Mobileye”, Barnden discussed a historical Mobileye presentation describing DMS software running on EyeQ4 and interfacing with an L2+ proposition. He identified Cipia as the software partner and questioned whether that software-only approach could meet what he called “safety-grade” DMS needs. That was his assessment in 2021; it does not establish the present status or capability of Mobileye or Cipia products.

Barnden also urged readers to attend to standards and regulation, writing: “Automotive is a heavily regulated, standards-based industry, so pay attention to the advisory and regulatory bodies first, before trying to out-smart your competitors.” It is an opinion-column recommendation, not a claim that the article documented a specific regulatory breach.

What later evidence changes—and what it does not

Mobileye announced on March 23, 2026, that an unnamed leading U.S. automaker had selected its DMS for future vehicles using EyeQ6L. The company said the program was expected to cover millions of vehicles across multiple models and model years, with production targeted for 2027. This is a forward-looking company announcement: the target date is not proof that production has started. It makes an unqualified present-day claim that Mobileye is ignoring DMS untenable, but it does not by itself establish system performance or change what Barnden argued in 2021. See Mobileye’s announcement.

Mobileye’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K reports approximately 230 million vehicles equipped with EyeQ system-on-chips and approximately 1,200 vehicle models as of September 27, 2025. Those company-wide EyeQ deployment figures are not counts of vehicles equipped with DMS. The filing is available from the SEC.

Seeing Machines figures in the 2021 debate

Barnden’s February 3, 2021 article reported company figures for Seeing Machines’ Guardian aftermarket system and related driving data. These are figures reported in that 2021 article, not independently audited totals or current counts:

  • More than 26,500 heavy trucks equipped with Guardian.
  • Almost 6 billion kilometers of on-road naturalistic driving data.
  • More than 8.3 million distraction events.
  • About 165,000 fatigue interventions over the prior 12 months, as reported in 2021.

The figures help explain why Barnden emphasized field data, but they cannot be used as a current supplier score or direct comparison with another company. His article did not establish common definitions, test conditions, or comparable totals across suppliers.

How to compare DMS suppliers without a false ranking

The cited material does not establish a current winner among Mobileye, NVIDIA, Seeing Machines, Qualcomm, and Cipia. A sound comparison needs evidence that is both current and comparable. Look for:

  • System scope: Is the offer software alone, or does it include sensing and processing components?
  • Sensing design: What camera, image sensor, lens, placement, and infrared illumination are used?
  • Operating evidence: Are results reported across lighting conditions and driver characteristics, using a stated method?
  • Vehicle integration: How do DMS signals affect warnings or driver-assistance behavior?
  • Data provenance: What data was collected, in what conditions, and how relevant is it to the intended deployment?
  • Safety and human factors: How are driver alerts and interventions designed and evaluated?
  • Deployment evidence: Is there a named production program, a stated production target, or only a demonstration or platform-compatibility report?

An EE Times article, “Name the ‘Mobileye’ of Driver Monitoring Systems,” reported historically that Seeing Machines software had been demonstrated on NVIDIA, Renesas, Texas Instruments, and other platforms. That establishes past demonstrations as reported in the article; it does not establish current platform support or an OEM production award.

How to read the article today

The most durable part of Barnden’s argument is the distinction between a software demonstration and a validated, integrated DMS. His supplier-specific criticisms, by contrast, are judgments made from public material in 2021, not a current benchmark. Mobileye’s later announced program is relevant evidence of a future production commitment, while its EyeQ fleet figures are not DMS adoption figures. The cited sources do not settle current production status or relative performance for NVIDIA, Seeing Machines, Qualcomm, or Cipia.
