The event’s center of gravity is now mainstream vehicles, hands-on driving, mobility technology, family programming, startups, forums and community experiences, with high-end models concentrated in a dedicated area called The Gallery.
What the Detroit Auto Show is now
The modern show is closer to a broad automotive and mobility festival than a luxury-car salon. The organizer says the 2025 edition attracted 275,000 attendees and promoted classic cars, technology showcases, motorsports appearances and consumer engagement alongside new-vehicle displays.

That mix matters because most visitors are not attending only to see rare supercars. They can compare mainstream models, talk with brand representatives, sit in vehicles, watch demonstrations and participate in driving experiences. Detroit Auto Show chairman Todd Szott described the appeal this way: “You can get up close, talk to the people behind the brands and actually experience the vehicles.”

For the 2026 edition, the organizer announced participation from Ford, General Motors, Stellantis and Toyota. Those four mass-market groups give the show a strong mainstream foundation. The organizer also retained The Gallery, an ultra-luxury and exotic showcase, so premium vehicles remain visible without serving as the event’s organizing principle.
#1 Best Overall
- Model size: 21 x 8.5 x 6.5 cm
- Material: polished stainless steel.
- Number of pieces: 146 pieces.
- Recommended age: 14+
| Part of the 2026 show | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Ford | Mainstream vehicles and truck, SUV and performance offerings |
| General Motors | Large-volume passenger vehicles, trucks and electric models |
| Stellantis | Mass-market, performance and utility brands |
| Toyota | High-volume cars, trucks, SUVs and electrified vehicles |
| The Gallery | Bounded ultra-luxury and exotic display |
| Other participating brands | The Associated Press reported more than 40 vehicle brands at the 2026 show; no complete brand list was published. |
The contrast is deliberate: a large field of vehicle brands sits alongside a specialized luxury collection rather than being overshadowed by one.
What visitors can do besides look at expensive cars
Ride-and-drive experiences
Hands-on driving is one of Detroit’s defining differences from a static display. Ride-and-drive tracks let attendees experience vehicles rather than only inspect them. The Associated Press reported that visitors took more than 100,000 rides at the prior show. That figure describes rides at the preceding event, not a guaranteed total for every future edition.
Technology and mobility exhibits
Technology is built into the show’s programming, including mobility demonstrations and AutoMobili-D, the industry-focused technology showcase. These areas can include startups, suppliers and emerging mobility concepts that would not fit a luxury-only format.

Classic cars and enthusiast displays
Classic-car culture and motorsports appearances broaden the show for enthusiasts who may be more interested in heritage, racing or restoration than in buying a new luxury vehicle.
Family STEM activities
The organizer’s archive records a partnership with the Michigan Science Center for kid-friendly STEM activities. That programming gives families an educational reason to attend and makes the event relevant even to visitors who are not shopping for a premium car.
How the show is structured
The published 2025 schedule divided the event into distinct professional and public programs:
Rank #3
- Iconic British-Inspired Styling - Build a striking red convertible with a long bonnet, upright front grille and sculpted bodywork, recalling the dignified look of classic British luxury motoring
- Distinctive Front Details - A prominent grille, small hood ornament, clear windscreen and carefully shaped headlights give the model its unmistakable vintage character and make it eye-catching from every angle
- Open-Cabin Design - The roofless profile reveals the detailed seating area, while the red body panels, dark trim and silver-tone spoke wheels create a refined contrast for display
- Enjoyable Build - Bring the model together piece by piece for a satisfying hands-on project. Designed for ages 14+, it offers a rewarding build for teens, adults and vehicle enthusiasts
- Display-Ready Collectible - Measuring approximately 6.9 x 2.76 x 2.17 inches, this compact classic-car model looks at home on a desk, shelf or in a vehicle collection, and makes a thoughtful gift for builders and collectors
- Media Day: press access and announcements.
- Industry Days: business-focused programming and networking.
- AutoMobili-D: mobility technology and startup-oriented exhibits.
- Mobility Global Forum: discussions about transportation and the changing automotive industry.
- Future Leaders Forum: career, education and leadership programming.
- Charity Preview: a preview event supporting charitable activity.
- Public Show: the multi-day consumer experience with displays and interactive attractions.
This structure makes the Detroit event a platform for consumers, companies, educators, students and community groups—not simply a room for luxury launches.

Detroit returned to January in 2025 after two September editions produced few new-model debuts and did not deliver the hoped-for gains in outdoor experiences or attendance. January places the event back in the traditional North American auto-show calendar, when manufacturers and media historically focused attention on major product news.
The change does not guarantee a return to the old unveiling model. The Associated Press reported that automakers increasingly favor digital launches because online events cost less and give a company more control over the timing, presentation and audience. A physical show also requires a manufacturer to share attention with every rival exhibiting in the same venue.

- LAMBORGHINI REVUELTO SUPERCAR MODEL CAR KIT - Build the cutting-edge Lamborghini Revuelto, the brand’s first hybrid V12 supercar, recreated in highly detailed 1:24 scale for collectors and car enthusiasts.

- AUTHENTIC INTERIOR DESIGN - Detailed cockpit with sport bucket seats and driver-focused layout, inspired by the real Revuelto’s aerospace-style interior.
That helps explain why Detroit can remain valuable even as it hosts fewer splashy world debuts: its strength is increasingly the complete visitor experience—vehicles, interaction, technology, forums and driving—not exclusive reveal moments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much luxury content remains?
Luxury has not disappeared. The organizer’s 2024 archive describes a luxury and exotic collection of 50 vehicles representing 12 brands. That is a substantial attraction, but it is a defined collection within a much larger event that also includes family education, technology and mainstream manufacturers.
The practical takeaway is simple: visitors who want exotics can find them in The Gallery, while everyone else can spend the day with high-volume brands, ride-and-drive activities and broader mobility programming.

What this means for the show’s identity
Detroit Auto Show executive director Rod Alberts said the event is being reimagined around what gets people excited about cars in a changing global automotive landscape. The 2025 attendance figure, the 2026 participation of four major mass-market groups, the ride-and-drive volume and the professional technology forums all point in the same direction.
Detroit still offers luxury and exotic cars, but those vehicles are now one attraction among many. Its public identity is a mainstream, interactive automotive and mobility event with a premium showcase—not a luxury-car show that happens to include ordinary vehicles.
