No: SUVs are not the only cars Europeans buy in large numbers. Dacia says the Sandero was Europe’s best-selling passenger car across all sales channels in both 2024 and 2025, even as SUVs reached a record 54% of new passenger-car registrations in Europe in 2024. Those facts can both be true: one model can lead the rankings while one body style dominates the market overall.
How can the Sandero lead while SUVs dominate?
The figures measure different things. Dacia’s statement is a ranking for one model; JATO Dynamics’ 54% figure describes the share of all new passenger-car registrations taken by the entire SUV category. A top-selling non-SUV does not mean non-SUVs outsold SUVs as a group.
For 2024, JATO counted 6.92 million SUV registrations across Europe-28—EU25 plus the UK, Norway and Switzerland—up 4% from 2023. SUVs’ 54% share was a record. Within the SUV category, compact C-SUVs made up 42% of registrations and smaller B-SUVs 36%. JATO’s 2024 European market analysis puts the Sandero’s success in that broader context.
What does “Europe’s best-selling car” mean here?
Dacia’s releases say the Sandero was Europe’s best-selling passenger car across all channels in 2024 and again in 2025. The model’s reported unit totals, however, are worldwide—not European registration totals. Dacia reported 309,392 worldwide Sandero sales in 2024, up 14.5% from 2023, and 289,295 in 2025, down 6.5% from 2024. The company’s 2025 release says it retained the European all-channel ranking for a second consecutive year. Dacia’s 2025 results release distinguishes the global volume from the European ranking; its 2024 results release provides the previous year’s total.

Dacia also says the Sandero has been Europe’s best-selling vehicle to private customers since 2017. That is a different channel-specific claim from its all-channel ranking. Neither statement should be read as saying the Sandero was Europe’s most-registered model in every individual country, or that its worldwide sales total represents European registrations.
Why is the Dacia Sandero popular in Europe?
JATO identifies the Sandero as one of Europe’s most affordable cars and says affordability is a major reason for its popularity. That offers a plausible explanation for how a non-SUV can rank so highly: buyers can choose a lower-priced passenger car without needing to choose an SUV. It does not establish that price alone caused the Sandero’s success, or quantify the effect of price against factors such as size, fuel costs or parking.

JATO says the Sandero ranked first in Spain and Portugal in 2024 and placed among the top five models in France, Italy, Belgium, Austria and Romania. These are country-level rankings for that year, not evidence that European buyers generally prefer the Sandero—or small cars—to SUVs. JATO’s analysis reports both the rankings and its affordability interpretation.
Does Dacia’s SUV success change the picture?
Yes: the Sandero’s story is not evidence that Dacia—or European buyers—have rejected SUVs. Dacia says the Duster has been the best-selling SUV to European retail customers since 2018. The company also ranked it as the second vehicle sold to European retail customers overall in 2024. Those are Dacia’s retail-channel claims, a different ranking universe from JATO’s all-channel market figures. Dacia’s 2024 results gives the company’s Duster rankings.

What the numbers do—and don’t—show
- They show coexistence: a non-SUV can lead a model ranking while SUVs account for more than half of new passenger-car registrations as a category.
- They show different kinds of success: the Sandero leads Dacia’s cited European all-channel model ranking, while SUVs collectively dominate the registration mix.
- They do not establish a broad change in preference: the cited figures do not quantify why buyers choose the Sandero or compare country-by-country demand for it against comparable SUVs.
- They are not interchangeable: Dacia’s Sandero unit totals are worldwide sales; its rankings are European and specify either all channels or private customers. JATO’s segment share covers Europe-28 registrations, while Dacia’s retail-market perimeter is defined separately.
Dacia CEO Denis Le Vot described the company’s 2024 results as evidence of “customers’ growing confidence in our models”; that is the manufacturer’s assessment, not an independent measure of buyer motives. Dacia’s results statement includes his comment.
