Automotive window tint can reduce glare and solar heat, add privacy, change a car’s appearance and provide UV protection—but “tint” is not just a question of darkness. Compare visible-light transmission (VLT) with a film’s overall solar-heat performance, check how the film will combine with your existing glass, and confirm the rules for your state and window positions before choosing a shade. Installation quality matters, too: clean glass, accurate fitting and proper curing all affect the result.
What does automotive window film do?
Window film is applied to vehicle glass to alter how light and solar energy pass through it. Depending on the film and the glass, it can help manage cabin heat and glare, add privacy, change the vehicle’s appearance and reduce UV exposure. Those benefits vary by product and application; no single film specification guarantees a particular comfort, health or fuel-economy outcome.
The International Window Film Association (IWFA) describes automotive film as a possible added measure for reducing sun exposure. It notes that vehicle glass does not screen UVA, but that is not a basis for treating tint as medical protection or a substitute for other sun-protection measures. See the IWFA’s automotive film overview.
How do you compare tint performance?
Start with the outcome you care about. VLT tells you how light or dark the installed glass will be; TSER or SHGC is more useful for comparing overall solar-heat performance. Also review the manufacturer’s UV, color and reflectivity information, and ask how the product will look on your specific glass.

| Measure | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| VLT (visible light transmission) | The percentage of visible light passing through the glass-and-film combination. Higher VLT means a lighter result. | Check the final reading for the combined glass and film, not just the film’s nominal VLT. VLT is commonly used in tint laws. |
| TSER (total solar energy rejection) | A measure of the share of total solar energy rejected. The IWFA guide describes TSER as 1 minus SHGC, expressed as a percentage. | Use it as an overall heat-rejection comparison, alongside the product’s test details. |
| SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) | The fraction of incident solar radiation admitted through a window, including energy transmitted directly and energy absorbed then released inward. Lower means less solar heat passes through. | Useful for comparing solar-heat performance; do not confuse it with visible darkness. |
| IR rejection | A manufacturer-reported infrared rejection figure. The IWFA says it is not a nationally or internationally standardized test value, and manufacturers may use different wavelength ranges. | Treat it cautiously and do not use it alone to compare total heat performance; look at TSER or SHGC. |
| UV, reflectivity, color and appearance | Product-specific characteristics and visual effects. | Compare manufacturer specifications and, where possible, view a sample on the actual vehicle. Glass, viewing angle, interior color and conditions can change perceived appearance. |
The IWFA’s Automotive Education Guide 2026 says roughly 44% of solar radiant energy is visible light and 53% is infrared. Those figures describe the solar spectrum, not the performance of a particular tint; they are not percentages that a film necessarily blocks.
How dark can you tint your windows?
There is no single legal tint percentage for every U.S. vehicle. State requirements can vary by window location and vehicle class, and the relevant VLT is the reading for the glass-and-film combination. Some jurisdictions may also have medical-exemption requirements.

- Identify your state, vehicle class and the specific windows you plan to tint.
- Check current requirements through official state sources, including any rules for medical exemptions.
- Ask the installer or film maker for the expected final VLT on your glass, then confirm it against the applicable rule before installation.
The IWFA interactive tint-law guide lets users select a state and vehicle type, but IWFA says the guide is informational, not legal advice, and leaves responsibility for determining current law with the reader. Verify the rules with the appropriate official source rather than relying on a general tint chart.
Does window tint keep heat out?
Some films can reduce solar heat entering a vehicle, but the amount depends on the film, glass and installation. A darker appearance does not, by itself, establish stronger heat rejection. Compare TSER or SHGC for overall solar performance and consider glare and visible-light tradeoffs alongside comfort.

When choosing film, ask for product-specific performance information and clarify how the figures were measured. An IR rejection number on its own may not be comparable between manufacturers because the test ranges can differ.
Can you install tint yourself?
DIY installation is possible, but it is precision-sensitive. Dust or residue trapped against the glass, inaccurate cuts, poor fit on curved windows and unsuitable curing conditions can affect the finished result. If you are uncertain about shaping film to a curved window or want to reduce the risk of a visibly flawed installation, consult an experienced installer. The IWFA describes a typical automotive installation as cleaning the glass, measuring and cutting the film, using positioning solution, fitting it to the inside of the window, squeegeeing out trapped air, heat-shaping where needed and trimming the edges. The adhesive then needs time to cure. The IWFA installation-process overview explains the sequence; its 2026 automotive guide notes that curing time varies with temperature and humidity.
Typical installation sequence
- Choose film and check the law. Discuss performance and appearance with the dealer, and confirm the final glass VLT will meet applicable rules.
- Clean the glass thoroughly. Contamination can become trapped beneath the film.
- Measure and cut. The film must be sized to the window and fitted accurately.
- Position the film. Apply positioning solution and place the film on the inside of the glass.
- Squeegee and shape. Work out trapped air; heat-shape film where the curve requires it.
- Trim and allow it to cure. Follow the product maker’s instructions for curing and care rather than assuming a universal wait time.
For cleaning, maintenance, warranty, compatibility and lifespan details, use the chosen film maker’s instructions. These vary by product and are not established by a single universal rule.

What if you are tinting a home or building?
Architectural film is a separate decision from automotive tint. Start with the existing glazing, local climate, desired daylight and view, glare, heat retention, fading concerns and appearance. A film that reduces solar gain can also reduce visible light, so a lower SHGC is not automatically the right choice for every room or climate.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s residential-window guidance treats U-factor, SHGC and visible transmittance as distinct measures. It says lower SHGC can help where cooling loads dominate, while greater solar gain may be preferable in cold climates. The same guidance cautions that tinting can reduce clarity and visible transmission and says it is not generally recommended for residential buildings. That is scoped guidance about residential fenestration, not a universal ban on retrofit film. See DOE FEMP’s guidance on purchasing energy-efficient residential windows, doors and skylights, updated December 2021.
For building film, treat energy savings as project-specific rather than guaranteed. IWFA says a professional can model a particular building using its efilm analysis program based on DOE’s EnergyPlus platform. Do not apply savings figures for replacement windows to a retrofit-film project: they describe a different intervention.
