The Classic ’90s Sports Car That’s a Reliable Weekend Thrill

The NA Miata delivers light, involving open-top driving, but a reliable example depends on rust-free bodywork, sound maintenance records and a careful inspection.

The first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata—known as the NA, and sold as 1990–1997 model years in the North American framing—is a standout classic for a weekend drive: light, rear-wheel drive, open-topped and engaging without requiring exotic-car power. But age changes the reliability question. A well-maintained, rust-free example is a better bet than a neglected car with a famous nameplate, so condition and records should decide whether a particular Miata is right for you.

Why the NA Miata makes a compelling weekend car

The Miata’s appeal is not about overwhelming speed. Its light weight, balanced rear-wheel-drive layout, steering, gearshift and easy-to-drop soft top make ordinary roads feel involving. Car and Driver described the first generation as light and eager, with a durable powertrain when kept unmodified and maintained. That is a useful description of its character, not a guarantee about any individual car.

For a sense of the original car’s performance, Car and Driver’s September 1989 issue recorded 116 hp, a weight of 2,210 lb, 0–60 mph in 9.2 seconds and 0.82 g on a 300-foot skidpad for a 1990 Miata. Those are period figures for that test car, not specifications for every NA year or trim. Early 1990–1993 cars used a 1.6-liter four rated at 116 hp; a 128-hp 1.8-liter arrived in 1994, according to Car and Driver’s buyer feature.

That modest power is part of the point: the car rewards momentum, smooth inputs and top-down driving rather than speed alone. The first-generation Miata is a strong all-round fit if you want a classic sports car that feels approachable and usable, provided the example you buy has been cared for.

How reliable is a 1990s Miata today?

There is no established comparative reliability score here that proves the NA Miata is more reliable than every contemporary sports car. What the available buyer guidance supports is narrower: an unmodified, maintained Miata can have a durable powertrain, while rust, neglected maintenance and prior damage can turn an otherwise appealing car into an expensive project. For a car around three decades old, a model’s reputation cannot substitute for an inspection.

Rust and old repairs

Corrosion is a central buying risk. Inspect the rocker panels or sills, wheel arches, fenders, doors, drain areas and underbody. Look for bubbling, fresh underseal hiding repairs, uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint or signs of poorly repaired crash damage. Have a specialist inspect questionable areas; a clean-looking exterior does not establish that the structure underneath is sound. Car and Driver specifically flags rust in the fenders, rocker panels and doors.

Service history and engine checks

Ask for maintenance records and evidence of cambelt replacement. Classic & Sports Car’s buyer guide gives an interval of 60,000 miles or six years; treat that as the guide’s advice, not a current manufacturer bulletin. If the history does not establish when the belt was last replaced, budget for having it checked and replaced as appropriate by a mechanic familiar with the car. The guide says belt failure is non-damaging, but that is not a reason to ignore overdue maintenance.

Check the engine number against the records, inspect the radiator and coolant, and look for signs of overheating or leaks. A cold start and a fully warmed-up drive can help reveal smoke, rough running or other problems. A specialist should investigate any symptoms rather than relying on a short test drive. Classic & Sports Car also notes that rear calipers can stick on cars used infrequently, and advises checking seats and carpets for damp that could point to leaks.

Early-car detail: the short-nose crank

Early 1990–1991 1.6-liter cars deserve particular scrutiny around the small-nose crank pulley. Car and Driver warns that incorrectly installed crank bolts can cause problems; Classic & Sports Car discusses the short-nose crank pulley and the risk of crankshaft failure. Ask whether the relevant work has been done correctly and have a knowledgeable mechanic inspect it. Do not assume every early car has the issue—or that a seller’s unsupported assurance settles it.

Top, windows and drains

Inspect the soft top for tears, worn seams and poor fit, and check the plastic rear window for clouding, cracking or damage. Look for damp carpets and test that doors and windows operate properly. Check sill drains for blockage, since trapped water can contribute to corrosion. A sound roof and clear drains matter for a car intended to be driven regularly, not just stored as a fair-weather ornament.

A focused pre-purchase checklist

  1. Review the paperwork: compare the engine number with the records and look for consistent maintenance evidence, including the cambelt replacement date and mileage.
  2. Inspect the body and underside: check sills, arches, fenders, doors, drains and underbody areas for rust, poor repairs or crash damage.
  3. Check the cabin and roof: inspect the soft top and rear window, test the windows, and feel the carpets and seats for damp or excessive wear.
  4. Assess the engine and cooling system: inspect coolant and radiator condition, start the engine, check for smoke, and investigate leaks or signs of overheating.
  5. Drive it long enough to assess it: check steering, shifting, braking and engine behavior as the car warms up; ask a mechanic to investigate anything abnormal.
  6. Use records appropriate to the location: in the UK, Classic & Sports Car suggests checking the car’s MoT history where relevant. Elsewhere, use the available local inspection and vehicle-history records.

Prefer a stock, well-maintained car over one whose modifications or track use make its history harder to evaluate. Track use is not proof of abuse, just as low mileage is not proof of good condition; look for records, workmanship and evidence of regular use and care. A pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic familiar with NA Miatas is especially valuable when rust or early-engine work is uncertain.

Miata or Toyota MR2 Turbo?

The Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20 is a credible alternative if you want a mid-engine layout and substantially more power. It is a different proposition from the Miata: more performance and complexity, with added emphasis on cooling, transmission condition and parts support. These cars should be compared by their condition and suitability, not by an unsupported reliability score.

Consideration NA Mazda MX-5 Miata Toyota MR2 Turbo SW20
Layout and character Light, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster with an emphasis on steering, balance and open-top use. Mid-engine turbo sports car, with a more performance-focused character.
Power figures in the cited sources Car and Driver lists 116 hp for the 1990 test car; its buyer feature says early 1990–1993 1.6-liter cars had 116 hp and a 1.8-liter 128-hp engine arrived in 1994. Classic Motorsports gives 200 hp for U.S.-spec Turbo models and says overseas factory variants reached up to 256 hp. Those overseas figures are not U.S. specifications.
Buying focus Prioritize corrosion, service records, cooling condition, roof and drains; scrutinize the short-nose crank detail on early 1990–1991 cars. Start with a stock example; check the coolant system, compression or leak-down results, and smooth shifting through all gears on a substantial drive.
Parts support The cited sources do not provide a direct, comparable parts-availability assessment. Classic Motorsports reports that some parts have been discontinued and specialty reproductions exist; availability can change.

Classic Motorsports says the SW20 reached U.S. buyers for model year 1991 and U.S. sales ended after 1995. Its buyer guide recommends checking the cooling system, compression or leak-down, and smooth shifting through every gear on a substantial drive. The Miata is the more straightforward match for someone seeking an accessible open roadster; the MR2 Turbo suits a buyer who values mid-engine turbo performance and is prepared to assess a more complex car.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose the NA Miata if you want a light, open-top classic whose pleasure comes from balance and involvement at ordinary road speeds—and you can find one with sound bodywork and credible maintenance records.
  • Consider the MR2 Turbo if mid-engine character and turbo power matter more than the Miata’s simple roadster feel, and you can verify cooling, engine and transmission condition as well as parts availability.
  • Walk away or get expert advice if rust, questionable repairs, missing service history or unexplained mechanical symptoms make the car’s condition hard to establish.

For either model, buy the condition and history in front of you, not a reputation or a headline power figure. Classic & Sports Car’s historic prices are explicitly correct only at the date of its original publication, so they should not be treated as current valuations.
