The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro ended production with the 2024 model year, but General Motors did not announce that the nameplate was permanently dead. In its March 2023 announcement, GM said there was no immediate successor to announce and that “this is not the end of Camaro’s story.” That leaves the Camaro’s future open—not confirmed: Chevrolet has not announced a new model, body style, powertrain, or return date in the cited materials.
Why the Camaro became an enduring performance-car name
Chevrolet dates the Camaro’s introduction to September 26, 1966, as a 1967 model. It arrived during the rise of the pony-car segment, with Chevrolet describing the Camaro as its entry into that market and Chevrolet Performance framing it as the company’s response to the Ford Mustang. Chevrolet also calls it an icon of the muscle-car era; that is the automaker’s characterization, not an independent ranking. Chevrolet’s heritage timeline and the GM/Chevrolet historical vehicle kit document the milestones.
The legacy rests less on one fixed formula than on a recognizable name adapting to different eras. The first-generation story included the Z28, which debuted in 1967, and pace-car appearances. An all-new second generation followed in 1970. Later chapters brought changes in styling and technology, the IROC-Z, a return of the convertible, special-order COPO drag-racing cars, and ultimately the sixth-generation ZL1. Chevrolet says that final-generation ZL1 offered 650 horsepower. These are examples of the nameplate’s range, not a complete account of every Camaro variant or achievement.
Chevrolet reports that Camaro production peaked at 282,571 vehicles in 1979. That is Chevrolet’s production figure for that year—not a sales total, lifetime tally, or measure that by itself explains the car’s cultural significance. The company’s timeline also highlights broad early engine and color choices, underscoring that the Camaro was offered as more than a single performance specification.

What ended—and when
On March 22, 2023, GM announced that the sixth generation would retire at the conclusion of the 2024 model year. The announcement said the final sixth-generation cars would leave the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan in January 2024. The model-year designation matters: “the end of the 2024 model year” is not the same claim as production ending at the close of calendar year 2024. GM’s announcement is the source for the timing and plant.
GM did not give a detailed explanation of the business reasons for the decision in that announcement. It is therefore not possible to assign the discontinuation to a specific cause from that statement alone.

Is the Camaro coming back?
GM’s statement was deliberately open-ended, but it was not a successor announcement. Scott Bell, Chevrolet vice president, Global Chevrolet, said on March 22, 2023: “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.” The words support the possibility of a future for the nameplate; they do not confirm that a new Camaro is in development or scheduled to launch.
The cited official materials do not establish a successor’s format, powertrain, or release date. A Camaro-branded competition vehicle is not proof that a Camaro passenger car is being sold or revived. Any claims about a particular return plan require a newer official announcement.

How Chevrolet marked the final model year
Chevrolet announced a 2024 Collector’s Edition for LT/RS, LT1, SS, and ZL1 trims in North America. Its design drew inspiration from Panther, the Camaro’s original project code name. The edition gave the final model year a retrospective frame without changing the central fact: it was a send-off for the sixth generation, not confirmation of what would follow. Chevrolet’s June 5, 2023 announcement lists the trims and Panther connection.

The end of sixth-generation production closes a substantial chapter in a nameplate introduced in 1966, spanning changing performance priorities, design eras, and forms of motorsport and cultural visibility. Its significance is not that the Camaro alone created the pony-car segment or that one production peak proves its place in American car culture. It is that Chevrolet’s own history presents a long-running competitor whose identity could encompass Z28s, convertibles, drag-racing COPO cars, and a 650-horsepower ZL1.
