The short run did not mean every car was finished by then: some unfinished vehicles were completed afterward and received 1976 model-year VINs. Its safety features explain the pitch; production and financing problems help explain why the project stopped.
What was the Bricklin SV-1?
Entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin created the Bricklin Vehicle Corporation, and designer Herb Grasse designed its two-seat sports car. According to Bricklin Autosport’s historical account, “SV-1” stood for “Safety Vehicle, First Edition.” The name captured the car’s intended emphasis, not proof that it outperformed other cars in crashes.
The cars were assembled in St. John, New Brunswick, using acrylic-and-fiberglass body panels fabricated in Minto. Their distinctive wedge-shaped bodies came in integral colors rather than conventional paint, and the gull-wing doors were a defining part of the design.
Which features were meant to put safety first?
Bricklin Autosport describes a four-sided perimeter box frame incorporating a roll cage, intended to protect occupants, and gull-wing doors designed not to protrude into traffic when open. Its history also cites the integral-color acrylic-and-fiberglass body and bumpers said to exceed federal standards. A 1975 handout from Steffes Group adds side guard rails and “5 mph shock-absorbing bumpers,” describing them as exceeding the safety requirements of the era (Steffes Group handout).

Those details establish a safety-oriented design brief, not a demonstrated crash-safety advantage. The sources cited here do not provide independent comparative crash-test results, so it would be too strong to call the SV-1 the safest car of its time or to claim its features produced superior real-world outcomes.
How long was it actually made?
Bricklin Autosport dates assembly to June 1974 through September 1975. The company entered receivership on September 26, 1975. That is the basis for the shorthand that the car “lived two years.” It does not mean the final cars were all assembled before the receivership or that production continued normally through 1976.

Bricklin Autosport counts 2,854 cars completed at the assembly plant, plus 36 unfinished vehicles later completed in Columbus, Ohio, by Consolidated International after it bought vehicles, parts and raw materials. It identifies VIN 2900 as the final official Bricklin and says 20 cars numbered 2881–2900 carried 1976 model-year identities.
Published totals can differ because they group the plant-built cars and later completions differently. The Steffes handout calls 2,854 the generally accepted final production count, while listing 780 cars for 1974 and 2,062 for 1975. Those annual figures add to 2,842 and do not account for the later completions in the same way as Bricklin Autosport’s breakdown. It is clearer to distinguish the 2,854 completed at the plant from the additional 36 later finished than to treat every figure as the same kind of total.

How did the SV-1 change from 1974 to 1976?

The 1976 designation refers to model year, not to a full additional year of ordinary factory production. The cars in that sequence were among the unfinished vehicles completed after the company’s 1975 receivership.
Why did the Bricklin project fail?
The end came through a combination of manufacturing challenges and limited financing, rather than one isolated flaw. Bricklin Autosport’s historical account says New Brunswick financed the project to create jobs in a struggling economy, reports C$23 million in provincial investment, and says the venture was deemed not viable for further funding before receivership. That is the site’s account of the financing decision, not an independently verified government audit.

The Steffes handout describes additional pressure on the business: early cars cost more to make than they were wholesaled for, production never reached a planned 1,000 cars per month, supply problems disrupted output, and bonding acrylic to fiberglass caused failures and added costs. Top Gear’s 2025 retrospective also points to powered gull-wing door mechanism failures and poor build quality. Taken together, these accounts describe a project struggling to build cars reliably and economically while depending on continued financial support.

The SV-1’s brief production history and distinctive construction make parts and specialist knowledge relevant for prospective owners. Bricklin Autosport’s parts page lists a Bricklin Parts Manual and describes new-old-stock components, body panels and reproduction mechanical parts. Inventory, fitment and any specialist service availability can change, so confirm them directly before relying on a listing.
