What is new on the G 550?
48-volt mild-hybrid assistance
The U.S. 2025 G 550 adds 48-volt mild-hybrid technology to its combustion powertrain. It is not a battery-electric G-Class: that distinction belongs to the G 580. The cited U.S. announcement does not provide a G 550 output figure, so the models should not be compared using an unstated number.

Subtle exterior revisions
Changes include a grille with four horizontal louvers, revised front and rear bumpers, a rounded-square front air inlet, updated A-pillar trim and a roof-edge spoiler lip. Mercedes-Benz says new insulation materials and aerodynamic refinements are intended to reduce noise and improve aerodynamics. Twilight Blue Metallic and new wheel choices are listed for the U.S. model.
More standard technology and comfort equipment
Mercedes-Benz USA lists MBUX as standard, with 12.3-inch driver and multimedia displays with touch control. The U.S. announcement also identifies wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, KEYLESS-GO, climate-controlled cup holders and Burmester 3D surround sound. Rear-seat entertainment is available, while driver-assistance and MANUFAKTUR options expand. Equipment depends on configuration.
What changed on the AMG G 63?
The U.S. 2025 AMG G 63 retains its handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 biturbo and adds a 48-volt electrical system with an integrated starter generator (ISG). Mercedes-Benz lists 577 hp and 627 lb-ft from the engine, with additional ISG assistance, and claims a 0–60 mph time of 4.2 seconds. These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements.

For buyers focused on body control, optional AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL uses hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive damping instead of conventional mechanical anti-roll bars. Confirm its availability for the particular market and configuration; the system is optional, not a universal standard feature.
What makes the electric G 580 different?
Four motors and a battery integrated into the G-Class structure
The G 580 with EQ Technology is the first fully electric G-Class. Mercedes-Benz USA lists four individually controlled electric motors, 579 hp and 859 lb-ft. Mercedes-Benz Media’s 2024 technical announcement gives 432 kW maximum combined output and 116 kWh usable battery capacity. The electric model keeps the ladder-frame architecture, modified and reinforced to accommodate the battery; Mercedes-Benz Media also describes a battery underbody shield with carbon content.
Range figures depend on the test cycle and market
Mercedes-Benz Media announced up to 473 km of range under the European WLTP test cycle. That is not a U.S. EPA range estimate, and the cited material does not establish real-world range. Do not compare that figure directly with a U.S. EPA-rated figure for another vehicle.

Electric motors enable new off-road controls
The electric model retains LOW RANGE and adds functions based on independent control of its four motors:
- G-TURN can pivot the vehicle on loose or unpaved ground.
- G-STEERING can reduce the turning circle during off-road driving.
- Off-road crawl manages propulsion at selected speeds.
- Torque vectoring can provide behavior similar to conventional differential locks.
Mercedes-Benz claims a maximum wading depth of 850 mm and the ability to climb grades up to 100 percent on suitable terrain. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified outcomes; actual performance depends on conditions and safe operation.

Electric-model details include an optional Black Panel grille, a slightly raised hood, rear-wheel-arch air curtains and a rear Design Box. Mercedes-Benz USA says the box can carry a charging cable, tools or snow chains. New functions include OFF-ROAD COCKPIT, a Transparent Hood/360-degree camera feature, Electric Intelligence route planning with charging stops, ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT and G-ROAR sound modes. Does the 2025 G-Class look different?
Only in details. The 2025 update does not replace the G-Class’s familiar boxy outline. Revised trim, bumpers and aerodynamic and noise treatments refresh it without changing its defining shape. The G 580 has additional electric-specific features, but remains recognizably part of the same family.
Which 2025 G-Class changes matter most?
The answer depends on which version you mean. The G 580 is the major addition: it brings a battery-electric powertrain and motor-based off-road controls. The G 550 and AMG G 63 are still combustion models, now with 48-volt assistance; their updates also include cabin technology and equipment changes. Because output, range standards and feature availability differ by model and market, use the specification for the exact variant you are considering.
