Which production car had the biggest rotary engine?
The car was the third-generation Eunos Cosmo, introduced in 1990. Mazda identifies it as the world’s first mass-production vehicle equipped with both a three-rotor rotary engine and a sequential twin-turbocharger system. The engine was the 20B-REW. Mazda’s Cosmo history and its rotary-engine development history document the application and its production significance.
How much displacement did the 20B-REW have?
Mazda’s technical material gives the 20B-REW’s three rotor chambers as 654 cc each. Multiplying 654 cc by three gives a stated total of 1,962 cc, or about 1.96 litres, under that rotary-engine convention. Mazda’s 2017 development chronicle identifies the engine as a three-rotor design and provides the chamber figure.
That figure should not be read as a direct, like-for-like comparison with a piston engine’s swept-volume rating. Rotary engines are described using chamber-volume conventions; the useful comparison here is the stated displacement across the 20B-REW’s three chambers, not a claim that it behaves like a 1,962 cc piston engine.

What made the Eunos Cosmo’s engine notable?
Three rotors in a series-production car
Mazda’s development history says bringing a multi-rotor rotary into mass production required solving an engineering challenge in the eccentric-shaft arrangement. Mazda also characterized the three-rotor engine as exceeding the smooth operation of a V8 and approaching that of a V12. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparative test.
Sequential twin turbochargers
The 20B-REW was paired with a sequential twin-turbo system. Mazda’s official history describes the Eunos Cosmo as the first mass-production vehicle to combine that system with a three-rotor rotary engine. The claim is specific to that combination; it does not mean the Cosmo was the first rotary-powered production car.

What power did Mazda quote?
Mazda’s official Cosmo history lists maximum output of 280 PS and maximum torque of 41.0 kg-m. Mazda’s 2007 technical press material also states 280 PS for the Eunos Cosmo. The evidence establishes the 20B-REW as the three-rotor engine used in a production car and gives its chamber displacement. It does not establish a comprehensive ranking against every prototype, racing engine or non-production installation. The answer to the production-car question is therefore the Eunos Cosmo’s 1,962 cc 20B-REW, without extending that claim to every rotary engine ever made.

Mazda’s consulted official sources do not state how many 20B-REW Eunos Cosmos were produced, how many engines were built, or how many cars survive. No production or survival total can be supported from those sources.
