What counts as a police vehicle?
A modern law-enforcement fleet is more than a pursuit car. Manufacturers use several overlapping categories:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV): engineered and equipped for pursuit work, including high-speed operation, police-rated braking, suspension tuning, cooling, electrical capacity, and durability requirements.
- Special-Service Vehicle (SSV): intended for patrol support, utility, transport, rural work, investigations, traffic control, or other duties where pursuit certification is not the primary requirement.
- Command-operations vehicle: a larger vehicle configured for first-responder coordination, VIP protection, personnel transport, or mobile command duties.
- Emergency-response vehicle: built around equipment, cargo, towing, rescue, incident-response, or heavy-duty requirements rather than conventional patrol pursuit.
That distinction matters because a Tahoe SSV, Ram 1500 SSV, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer Command Operations Vehicle may all serve a police department without being direct alternatives to a pursuit-rated Ford Police Interceptor Utility, Chevrolet Tahoe PPV, or Dodge Durango Pursuit.

This is a lineup comparison, not a ranking. Manufacturer specifications describe factory capability and intended use; they do not establish which vehicle will have the lowest lifecycle cost, best reliability, or best real-world performance for every agency.
Ford: a dedicated police utility at the center
2026 Ford Police Interceptor Utility
Ford’s principal law-enforcement vehicle is the 2026 Police Interceptor Utility. Ford describes it as designed exclusively for law-enforcement operations, rather than as a retail crossover merely made available to government buyers.
The 2026 model offers three powertrain choices:
- 3.3-liter V6 hybrid: standard, with 318 combined system horsepower.
- 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6: available, rated at 285 horsepower.
- 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6: available, rated at 400 horsepower.
The range gives agencies a meaningful choice between a hybrid powertrain suited to an idle-heavy duty cycle, a conventional V6, and a higher-output engine positioned toward pursuit performance. The published figures are factory ratings; they are not proof of a particular department’s fuel savings or operating-cost advantage.
Police-specific equipment includes Police Engine Idle, Police Dark Car capability, specialized seating, police durability-cycle testing, and a Class III trailer hitch. These features address realities that retail-vehicle comparisons often omit: an engine may need to run while the vehicle is stationary, the cabin must accommodate duty gear, and the vehicle may carry radios, light bars, computers, weapons storage, and other electrical or payload demands.
Ford’s 2026 brochure also says that the available 400-horsepower Police Interceptor Utility achieved the highest top speed among vehicles tested in the 2025 Michigan State Police evaluation and outperformed gas-powered police utility vehicles in that test. That is Ford’s summary of the MSP evaluation, not an independently reconstructed test result. Agencies should consult the underlying MSP report and their own testing before treating it as a purchasing conclusion.
2025 Ford F-150 Police Responder
Ford’s police-fleet materials also identify the 2025 F-150 Police Responder. Its specification sheet lists a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and notes that the truck was developed to meet the same federal fuel-system crash standards as retail vehicles and other manufacturers’ police vehicles.
The F-150 Police Responder is not simply a larger version of the Police Interceptor Utility. It is relevant when an agency needs a cargo bed, towing ability, ground clearance, off-road flexibility, or rural-response capability. Those advantages come with the usual pickup trade-offs: greater size, different maneuverability, and a duty profile that may not suit a tightly packed urban patrol fleet.
Ford’s fleet identity: a purpose-configured police utility for core patrol and pursuit work, paired with a pursuit-capable pickup for agencies that need truck utility.
General Motors: the broadest current lineup
GM’s five-model police roster
General Motors presents the broadest clearly enumerated lineup in the current materials reviewed. Its police page lists the 2026 Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV, 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV, 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe SSV, 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 PPV, and 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 SSV.
That breadth matters for agencies trying to match different assignments to different body styles while maintaining a relationship with one manufacturer. It does not mean GM has the highest sales volume; it means the published lineup covers more distinct pursuit and special-service roles in one portfolio.

Chevrolet Tahoe PPV and Tahoe SSV
The 2026 Tahoe PPV is GM’s full-size SUV pursuit vehicle. It uses a standard 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 and includes police-rated brakes with front Brembo calipers on 16-inch rotors, along with police-rated suspension.
The Tahoe SSV uses the same 5.3-liter V8 but serves a different purpose. It is a special-service configuration that emphasizes service utility rather than the pursuit-focused role of the PPV. That can make it a better fit for agencies prioritizing equipment, personnel, transport, or general response work over high-speed pursuit certification.
The Tahoe’s full-size dimensions provide room for occupants and equipment, but agencies still need to verify the final upfit’s payload, axle loading, center of gravity, and interior-clearance requirements. A factory police package does not eliminate the need to engineer the completed vehicle.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 PPV and SSV
GM offers the Silverado 1500 in both pursuit and special-service configurations. The Silverado 1500 PPV includes Brembo front brakes, an available factory suspension lift that retains its pursuit rating, and a Multi-Flex tailgate.
The available lift is important because it shows that a pursuit-rated configuration does not necessarily have to remain at standard retail ride height. However, the agency should confirm how the selected configuration affects ingress, equipment placement, handling, tire selection, and upfit compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Silverado 1500 SSV is oriented toward service functions and lists equipment such as a Brake Life Monitor and available safety and utility equipment. As with the Tahoe pair, the PPV and SSV labels should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions. One is pursuit-oriented; the other is intended for broader service work.
Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV
The Blazer EV PPV is GM’s clearest purpose-built electrification effort in the law-enforcement market. The current product material describes a dual-motor performance all-wheel-drive configuration with:
- 498 horsepower
- 531 pound-feet of torque
- An EPA-estimated 286-mile range
- A projected 130-mph top speed
- Police-rated suspension
- Police-specific seating
- A dedicated electrical center
- Support for continuous emergency-equipment loads
- Protected-idle capability
The electrical details are as important as the acceleration potential. Police vehicles may run radios, computers, warning lights, cameras, chargers, and other equipment for long periods. A vehicle intended for that environment must be evaluated on sustained electrical load and thermal management, not merely battery range.
There is a model-year transition to watch. GM’s general police page lists the Blazer EV PPV as a 2026 product, while the linked product page currently renders as a 2027 Blazer EV Police Pursuit Vehicle. That page also highlights additions such as a North American Charging Standard port and an HD Surround Vision Recorder. Those details should not be blended into a generic 2026 specification. Buyers should verify the applicable order guide, production timing, charging connector, and equipment list for the exact model year being bid.
GM’s fleet identity: the widest role coverage of the three manufacturers reviewed, spanning an electric pursuit utility, a full-size SUV in both PPV and SSV forms, and pickup-based PPV and SSV configurations.

Stellantis: Durango pursuit capability plus mission-specific vehicles
2026 Dodge Durango Pursuit
The 2026 Dodge Durango Pursuit is Stellantis’ principal pursuit vehicle and the clearest direct counterpart to Ford’s Police Interceptor Utility and GM’s Tahoe PPV.
The Durango uses a standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and offers a 5.7-liter HEMI V8. The 2026 materials list up to 360 horsepower with the available V8. Both configurations use an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and the vehicle offers all-wheel drive.
Police-specific equipment includes heavy-duty four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, police-specific front seats, a Vehicle Systems Interface Module, vinyl flooring, and an HVAC cabin filter. The Vehicle Systems Interface Module is particularly relevant to upfitters because it provides a defined way to integrate vehicle systems and emergency equipment; agencies should still confirm wiring, software, compatibility, and installation requirements for their selected package.

The Durango’s V8 gives Stellantis a distinct identity in a market where hybrid and electric options are becoming more visible. That does not automatically make it superior or inferior. A V8 may fit an agency’s performance, towing, sound, training, or existing-maintenance preferences, while another agency may prioritize idle efficiency, emissions targets, or charging infrastructure.
2026 Ram 1500 Special Service Vehicle
The 2026 Ram 1500 Special Service Vehicle is a service-oriented pickup, not the direct pursuit equivalent of the Durango Pursuit. It is relevant for agencies that need a cargo bed, towing, equipment transport, or special-response flexibility.
Its place in the portfolio illustrates Stellantis’ mission-based approach: use the Durango for pursuit-oriented SUV duties and a Ram pickup when cargo, towing, or field utility matters more than a conventional pursuit package.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer Command Operations Vehicle
The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Command Operations Vehicle occupies a different category again. Stellantis positions it for first responders, VIP protection, transportation, and command operations.
It should therefore not be described as a conventional pursuit package without additional evidence. A large, well-equipped SUV can be valuable as a command or transport platform while being the wrong choice for routine high-speed patrol work.
2027 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Emergency Response Vehicle
Stellantis has also announced the 2027 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Emergency Response Vehicle. The announcement places it alongside the Durango Pursuit, Jeep Grand Wagoneer Command Operations Vehicle, and Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 special-service vehicles.
This expands Stellantis’ coverage toward heavier emergency-response work. It does not replace the Durango as the company’s core pursuit SUV. Agencies needing rescue equipment, incident-response payload, heavy towing, or a larger upfit platform should evaluate this category separately from patrol-pursuit vehicles.

For routine pursuit and patrol
The most direct comparison is among the Ford Police Interceptor Utility, Chevrolet Tahoe PPV, and Dodge Durango Pursuit. All are purpose-configured SUVs, but their published emphasis differs:
- Ford: offers a standard hybrid, a conventional V6, and a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6, along with police-specific idle and durability features.
- GM: uses the full-size Tahoe platform with a 5.3-liter V8, police-rated suspension, and police-rated braking hardware.
- Stellantis: offers the Durango with a Pentastar V6 or 5.7-liter HEMI V8, all-wheel drive, an eight-speed transmission, heavy-duty brakes, and a police interface module.
Headline horsepower alone cannot settle the comparison. Agencies also need acceleration and braking data from relevant tests, sustained cooling performance, tire and brake wear, officer ergonomics, visibility, interior equipment space, and the behavior of the fully upfitted vehicle.
For special service, cargo, and rural response
GM has the most explicitly varied choices: Tahoe SSV for SUV-based service work, Silverado 1500 SSV for pickup utility, and Silverado 1500 PPV when a pursuit-rated truck is required. Ford’s F-150 Police Responder addresses the same broad pickup need, while Stellantis offers the Ram 1500 SSV and additional Ram special-service platforms.
The correct choice depends on the equipment list. A department carrying a canine unit, traffic-control gear, mobile command equipment, rescue tools, or bulky evidence supplies should compare usable cargo volume and payload rather than relying on exterior size.

For electrification
GM has the clearest purpose-built electric pursuit offering in the researched lineup: the Blazer EV PPV. Its published specifications address range, performance, police suspension, protected idle, and continuous emergency-equipment loads.
Ford’s principal pursuit utility brings hybrid availability, while the Ford and Stellantis materials reviewed here continue to center their main pursuit offerings on hybrid or internal-combustion powertrains. That is not evidence that either manufacturer has no future electrified products; it only describes the products identified in this research.
For an electric or hybrid purchase, the fleet analysis must include charger installation, shift scheduling, winter and hot-weather range, high-load accessory use, backup vehicles, battery warranty terms, technician training, and the effect of prolonged idle or stationary equipment operation.
For command and emergency operations
The market separates clearly here. GM’s Tahoe and Silverado service vehicles can cover many utility assignments, while Stellantis explicitly offers the Grand Wagoneer Command Operations Vehicle and a heavier Ram emergency-response vehicle. Ford’s F-150 Police Responder is more naturally associated with truck-based response, cargo, towing, or rural work than with the command-operations role described for the Grand Wagoneer.

Why police upfitting changes the comparison
A factory vehicle is only the starting point. The completed unit may add a light bar, siren, radio, mobile computer, camera system, prisoner partition, weapons mount, auxiliary battery, push bumper, ballistic equipment, storage, and other hardware. Those additions affect weight, aerodynamics, electrical demand, cooling, braking, handling, and warranty administration.
GM’s Blazer EV material specifically addresses a dedicated electrical center, radio-speaker wiring, continuous emergency-equipment loads, and protected idle. Ford lists police-specific electrical and idle-related features, while Stellantis identifies its Vehicle Systems Interface Module. These provisions are useful, but they do not make every aftermarket component automatically compatible.
Before purchase, the fleet and upfit teams should confirm:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The vehicle’s payload and axle ratings after the proposed equipment is installed.
- Available alternator, battery, high-voltage, and auxiliary electrical capacity.
- Radio, antenna, speaker, camera, and computer integration requirements.
- Cooling performance during stationary operation and high-load driving.
- Brake, tire, suspension, and warranty implications of the completed build.
- Whether the upfitter has validated the exact model year and trim, not merely the nameplate.
- Parts, service, diagnostic, and technician support in the agency’s operating area.
A practical procurement framework
Agencies can narrow the field without turning the decision into a brand contest:
- Define the assignment. Separate pursuit, routine patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, transport, rural response, command, and emergency response.
- Set the duty cycle. Document annual mileage, idle hours, shift length, weather, terrain, trailer use, and the percentage of time spent carrying a full equipment load.
- Build the upfit before comparing total cost. A lower vehicle price can disappear once lighting, communications, storage, safety equipment, charging, and installation are included.
- Test the completed configuration. Evaluate acceleration, braking, handling, visibility, ingress and egress, equipment access, electrical behavior, and thermal performance with the actual upfit installed.
- Model infrastructure and lifecycle cost. Compare fuel or electricity, maintenance, tires, brakes, batteries, chargers, downtime, training, parts availability, and replacement timing.
- Verify the model year and order guide. Manufacturer websites may display evergreen lineup pages, transition-year pages, images, and specifications from different production periods.
Important model-year and evidence cautions
- Ford’s principal source for the Police Interceptor Utility is a 2026 brochure. The F-150 Police Responder source is a 2025 specification sheet and should not be silently relabeled as a 2026 vehicle.
- GM’s general police page lists 2026 products, but the linked Blazer EV page currently renders as a 2027 Police Pursuit Vehicle. Confirm the applicable order guide before publication, bidding, or purchase.
- Stellantis provides 2026 materials for the Durango Pursuit and Ram 1500 SSV. Its 2027 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Emergency Response Vehicle is a later announced addition and should be identified as such.
- Factory horsepower, range, top-speed, brake, and equipment claims are not substitutes for independent testing, procurement records, or lifecycle-cost studies.
- No vehicle is universally best. The right choice depends on the agency’s mission, geography, staffing, upfit, infrastructure, and budget.
Source note
The specifications above are drawn from the manufacturer materials identified in the research for this article: Ford’s 2026 Police Interceptor Utility brochure and 2025 F-150 Police Responder specification sheet; GM’s current police lineup and Blazer EV product materials; and Stellantis’ 2026 Durango Pursuit buyer’s guide, 2026 Ram 1500 SSV materials, command-operations information, and 2027 Ram 2500 emergency-response announcement. Availability, equipment, and model-year labeling can change, so agencies should confirm the current order guide and local fleet representative before making a purchase.
