The best used sedan for the money is not simply the cheapest one you can find. It is a particular model year and car whose reliability record, safety equipment, space, fuel use and condition suit your needs—and whose full ownership cost fits your budget. For U.S. shoppers, selected Toyota Camry and Honda Accord years are strong all-around candidates; specific Mazda6 and Hyundai Sonata years may also fit, depending on safety build-date rules and local prices.
Use the model-year lists below to narrow your search, not to certify any individual car. Reliability ratings describe groups of vehicles, while safety ratings and build-date conditions can differ by year. A clean history, open-recall check and independent inspection still matter before you buy.

Which used sedans are worth shortlisting?
Start with the exact model year, not a brand’s reputation. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide identifies the following midsize and large cars from model years 2015–2024 as having above-average reliability for the years shown. The list marks selected years; an unlisted year is not thereby proven unreliable.

Toyota Camry: broad year coverage
The Camry appears across many of the reliability years in the guide. It is a sensible first comparison for buyers who want a conventional midsize sedan, with hybrid versions worth considering if fuel use is a priority. Compare the exact year, trim, mileage and maintenance records rather than assuming every Camry is equivalent.
Honda Accord: another all-around midsize option
Selected Accord years and several Accord Hybrid years also make the reliability list. The Accord is a useful alternative to the Camry when its space, equipment, condition or local asking price better fits your needs. Check the specific car’s features and records; the model name alone does not establish its condition.

Mazda6 and Hyundai Sonata: consider the specific year and build date
The Mazda6 and Sonata appear in selected reliability and safety lists, but qualifying safety recommendations are narrower than the model name alone suggests. For the Mazda6, the joint 2025 IIHS/Consumer Reports list covers 2019–2021 vehicles built after June 2019. For the Sonata, it covers 2023 or newer vehicles built after December 2022. Confirm the build date and the actual safety equipment before treating a particular car as a match.

How do safety-based recommendations and prices compare?
The 2025 joint IIHS/Consumer Reports used-vehicle release named these “Best Choices” and published approximate prices for the earliest qualifying model year. These were U.S. average values as of March 27, 2025, assuming the lowest trim, good condition, typical mileage and a private-party purchase—not current quotes or prices for every vehicle in the listed range.

IIHS and Consumer Reports’ 2025 used-vehicle list is useful for narrowing candidates, but its prices are dated reference points. Compare a car with current local listings after accounting for condition, mileage, title status and trim.
Newer awards should not be projected backward onto older cars. IIHS named the 2025–2026 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, and the 2025 Hyundai Sonata, Top Safety Pick+ winners. IIHS’s Safe Vehicles for Teens page, updated May 27, 2026, includes these midsize sedans among its used Best Choices. The median retail figures below apply to the earliest qualifying year and use Black Book data obtained in April 2026. They are not live listing prices; the list’s criteria also include crash-test performance, handling, usability, headlights and automatic emergency braking thresholds.

How should you compare the real cost of ownership?
Purchase price is only one part of value. Two cars with similar asking prices can differ in fuel use, insurance, registration and likely maintenance. Compare the actual year and trim against how you drive, who rides with you, and what the car will cost to operate where you live.
- Budget: Compare current local asking prices and request a dealer’s out-the-door price in writing. Include sales tax and registration rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
- Fuel: Consider your annual mileage and whether a hybrid’s fuel use makes sense for your driving. Do not assume the hybrid is automatically the better value without comparing its purchase price and condition.
- Insurance and upkeep: Get insurance estimates for the exact vehicle and account for routine maintenance and possible repairs.
- Use: Check whether the cabin, trunk, seating and features work for your regular passengers and cargo, and whether the car’s mileage and service history suit your plans.
- Evidence: Compare model-year reliability information and safety equipment, then verify that the individual car has the equipment and build date required by any safety recommendation.

What should you check before buying a specific car?
A model-year shortlist helps you decide what to inspect; it does not replace checking the vehicle in front of you. Use the VIN and paperwork to investigate history and recalls, then arrange an independent mechanical inspection.
- Get a vehicle history report. The FTC says the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) lists approved report providers. It also names AutoCheck, Carfax and VINaudit as examples of other providers, while explicitly not endorsing any specific service. A report may show ownership, accident, repair or salvage information, but cannot establish the car’s present mechanical condition. NMVTIS vehicle history and FTC used-car guidance.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup to see whether a recall is open for that specific car. NHTSA recall lookup.
- Read the dealer’s Buyers Guide. Check whether the car is sold with a warranty or “as is,” and get any promises made by the dealer in writing.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask a trusted mechanic for a written report and repair estimates. The FTC advises buyers to get the car inspected by an independent mechanic and check for recalls; a history report is not a substitute.
- Look over and test-drive the car. In good light, check for rust, leaks and signs of collision repair. Try the controls and infotainment. During the drive, watch for smoke, vibration, unusual smells or leaks. Have a trusted mechanic assess mechanical condition rather than relying on a walkaround.
