The best new station wagon for you depends on whether you want a practical all-weather luxury car, a high-performance wagon, or an electric long-roof vehicle. For 2026, the U.S. shortlist includes the Volvo V60 Cross Country, Audi A6 allroad, Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain, BMW M5 Touring, Audi RS6 Avant and Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo. The redesigned Subaru Outback belongs in a separate wagon-like alternatives category: Subaru markets it as an SUV.
How to choose among the 2026 station wagons
These cars share a long-roof, cargo-friendly layout, but they do not serve the same buyer. Start with your budget and local availability, then compare cargo space, powertrain, efficiency, performance and ground clearance. Also decide whether you want a traditional wagon shape or a raised model intended for rougher roads.

“Wagon” is not a clear-cut label for every raised-roof vehicle in this group. This guide includes Cross Country, All-Terrain and Cross Turismo models because they retain a wagon-like profile and cargo-oriented layout. The Outback is set apart because Subaru officially positions the 2026 redesign as an SUV.

Prices are not directly interchangeable: manufacturer MSRP, a configured vehicle price, an editorial starting-price estimate and a single dealer listing describe different things. Confirm current pricing and local inventory before treating a model as available to buy new.

Best smaller premium wagon: Volvo V60 Cross Country
The V60 Cross Country is the lower-priced premium entry in this shortlist, with a $53,595 starting MSRP on Volvo Cars USA’s 2026 model page. Its mild-hybrid engine makes 247 hp, and the EPA-rated combined fuel economy is 26 mpg. Standard all-wheel drive, an off-road mode, higher ground clearance and hill descent control suit buyers who want more rough-road confidence than a conventional low-slung wagon offers. See Volvo’s 2026 V60 Cross Country specifications.
Autoblog describes the V60 Cross Country as having limited availability in the U.S., so check dealer stock rather than assuming a nearby car can be ordered or delivered promptly. Autoblog’s U.S. wagon availability overview provides additional context.

Best all-round luxury wagon: Audi A6 allroad
The A6 allroad combines a V6 with standard quattro all-wheel drive and a useful cargo area. Audi lists a $73,100 starting price and 30.0 cu ft of cargo volume with the rear seatbacks up. The 40/20/40-folding rear seatbacks and roof rails add flexibility for passengers and longer loads. Audi’s 2026 page also lists 335 hp, 369 lb-ft and a 5.4-second 0–60 mph time. Check the Audi A6 allroad’s U.S. specifications.
This is an all-weather, light-adventure wagon, not a substitute for a serious off-road vehicle. Audi says off-pavement driving should be limited to permitted roads and trails. For buyers who mainly need space, comfort and traction in poor weather, that distinction may not be a drawback.

- Opening doors & hood, Free wheel action
- New in Window Box
Best for luxury comfort: Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain
The E-Class All-Terrain is the comfort-first choice among the raised luxury wagons. Car and Driver lists five seats, all-wheel drive, a $79,650 starting price and 25 mpg combined for the 2026 model, and ranks it first in its 2026 wagon list. Those are editorial figures and rankings, not a guarantee of a specific dealer configuration or price. Check Mercedes-Benz’s current offer and local inventory before comparing it with manufacturer-listed MSRPs. Read Car and Driver’s 2026 E-Class All-Terrain specifications and review.
Best high-performance plug-in hybrid: BMW M5 Touring
The M5 Touring pairs a 4.4-liter V8 with an electric motor in a plug-in hybrid powertrain. BMW USA lists 717 hp, 27.2 cu ft of cargo capacity and up to 24 miles of electric driving on its current product page. It gives an as-configured MSRP of $125,300; that is not necessarily the base MSRP or a buyer’s transaction price. See BMW USA’s M5 Touring details.

- 1/24 Scale Collectible Model Station Wagon
- This is a 8"Lx 2.75"Wx 2.5"H Diecast Metal model with some plastic parts
- Freewheeling, Openable Doors And Hood
- Packed in a window box
BMW quotes a 3.5-second 0–60 mph time, but identifies the acceleration figure as preliminary test results and says actual results vary by vehicle specification, conditions, testing procedure and driving style. The M5 Touring is the performance-oriented pick, not an efficiency-first family wagon.
Best for high-performance driving: Audi RS6 Avant
The RS6 Avant is another performance-led choice. Car and Driver lists the 2026 model at $132,095, with 621 hp and 16 mpg combined. Those figures come from Car and Driver’s model ranking, rather than the Audi product page in this guide’s source set; confirm current U.S. availability, official specifications and pricing with Audi or a dealer before making a purchase decision. See Car and Driver’s 2026 wagon ranking.

Best electric wagon: Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo
The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo brings an electric powertrain and raised wagon-like body to the performance end of the market. Porsche Finder displayed a new 2026 vehicle at Porsche Riverside with a 272-mile EPA-estimated range and a listed price of $175,555. That is the price for one dealer-configured vehicle, not a general starting MSRP; range and price depend on configuration. View the Porsche Finder listing.
Electric range and gasoline fuel economy are different measures, so the Taycan’s EPA-estimated miles should not be compared directly with the mpg figures for the other cars. Consider your charging access and typical trip length as well as purchase price.
Wagon-like alternative: 2026 Subaru Outback
If you want AWD, more ground clearance and utility for rougher roads, the 2026 Outback may belong on your shopping list even if it does not meet your definition of a station wagon. Subaru calls the redesigned Outback an AWD midsize SUV and lists up to 260 hp, 3,500 lb of towing capacity and 9.5 inches of ground clearance. See Subaru’s 2026 Outback specifications.

- Availability: Confirm that a new example is actually in stock or orderable near you. A model appearing in an editorial list does not establish current dealer availability.
- Total budget: Separate a manufacturer’s starting MSRP from a configured MSRP, a dealer’s asking price and an editorial estimate. Get a current, itemized quote for the exact vehicle.
- Cargo measurement: Audi publishes 30.0 cu ft with the rear seats up; BMW lists 27.2 cu ft of cargo capacity. Check each manufacturer’s measurement conditions and whether a figure suits your usual load before treating the numbers as a direct comparison.
- Powertrain and efficiency: The shortlist spans mild hybrid, gasoline, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. Match the type to your driving and charging needs; mpg and electric range are not equivalent measures.
- Road use: AWD helps with traction, while ground clearance and a model’s intended use matter on rough roads. Audi specifically limits off-pavement use to permitted roads and trails.
One apparent option needs particular caution: Car and Driver includes the Volvo V90 Cross Country in its 2026 ranking at $68,195, while Autoblog says the model has disappeared from the U.S. market. Because those accounts conflict, it is not included as a confirmed new-car recommendation here. Verify its status directly with Volvo or a dealer before pursuing one.
