These cars were not tested against one another, and they span competition prototypes, a rally-prepared SUV and a limited-production road car. The fair comparison is by achievement, engineering influence and road-going purpose—not a single all-purpose ranking.
How to choose the best off-road Porsche
Porsche’s off-road history began well before the 911 Dakar. The company says 911s were used in rallying soon after the model’s launch and competed in the East African Safari Rally in the 1970s. That experience led to the 953’s Paris-Dakar victory in 1984, followed by the 959’s win in 1986 and a production all-wheel-drive legacy. A separate chapter came with the Cayenne S in the Transsyberia Rally. Porsche’s 911 off-road history and its overview of iconic Porsche 4x4s trace those different paths.
- For the breakthrough: choose the 953, the 911-based competition car that won the 1984 Paris-Dakar.
- For the most dominant Paris-Dakar result: choose the 959, whose entries finished first, second and sixth in 1986.
- For rally success in an SUV: choose the Cayenne S Transsyberia, with top results in the 2006 and 2007 Transsyberia rallies.
- For a road-going off-road 911: choose the 911 Dakar, a modern production model with more ground clearance than a standard 911 Carrera.
1. Porsche 953: the breakthrough off-road 911
The 953—officially designated the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 4×4 Paris-Dakar in Porsche’s history—was a four-wheel-drive rally car based on the 911 Carrera 3.2. Its defining achievement was winning the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally. Porsche credits the program with helping pioneer all-wheel drive in its sports cars, making the 953 the clearest pick for historical significance and the start of the modern 911’s all-wheel-drive lineage. René Metge and co-driver Dominique Lemoyne won in the 953. Porsche’s retrospective marks their celebration with the caption “Victoire!”—a fitting snapshot of the car’s defining moment. Porsche’s 4×4 history identifies the drivers and occasion.
2. Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar: the strongest rally result
Porsche developed the 959 for rallying after the 953’s success. In the 1986 Paris-Dakar, the 959 entries finished first, second and sixth after covering approximately 14,000 kilometres across Africa, according to Porsche’s motorsport history. The result gives the 959 the strongest claim to outright competition dominance among these candidates.

The 959 matters beyond the rally standings. Porsche describes the road-going 959 as its first series-production car with all-wheel drive, with an output of 336 kW (450 PS) and a production total of 292 examples. Those specifications describe the road car, not the rally entries. Porsche’s 911 Dakar history press kit gives the production-car figures.
3. Cayenne S Transsyberia: Porsche’s rally SUV
The Cayenne S Transsyberia is the strongest candidate if “off-road Porsche” means an SUV platform with serious long-distance rally results. Private teams entered Cayenne S models in the 2006 Transsyberia Rally and took first and second. In 2007, Porsche achieved first, second and third, with seven Porsches in the top ten. Porsche’s retrospective identifies the Cayenne’s debut in 2002 and separates these results from its Paris-Dakar history. Porsche’s Cayenne history details the Transsyberia results.

Those finishes belong to the Transsyberia Rally, not the Paris-Dakar. They show a different kind of achievement: a production SUV platform succeeding in a demanding rally, rather than a purpose-built 911-based competition car winning in Africa.
4. Porsche 911 Dakar: the road-going off-road choice
Presented in November 2022, the 911 Dakar is a production road car that brings Porsche’s rally history into a contemporary 911. Porsche states that it has 50 mm more ground clearance than a standard 911 Carrera and presents it for both road and off-road use. The company explicitly connects the model to the 1984 Paris-Dakar legacy. Porsche’s launch announcement and its 4×4 history explain that relationship.

The 911 Dakar is not a Paris-Dakar-winning competition car. It is the strongest choice here for someone asking which modern production 911 was designed with real off-road use in mind, rather than which Porsche achieved the most in a rally.

The table compares documented roles and results, not measured off-road performance. Porsche’s cited material does not provide a consistent set of approach, departure and breakover angles, tire specifications, suspension travel and drivetrain figures for all four candidates. Ground clearance alone is not enough to rank them technically.

Can a Porsche 911 go off-road?
Yes—but the answer depends on which 911. The 953 and 959 were competition cars developed for rallying, while the 911 Dakar is a production road car with additional ground clearance and an explicit road-and-off-road remit. Porsche also traces the model’s off-road story to rallying in the 1970s. None of that makes every 911 an off-road vehicle: the history is about specific competition and production models, not the whole 911 range.
Did Porsche win the Dakar Rally?
Yes. The 953-based 911 Carrera 3.2 4×4 won the Paris-Dakar in 1984, and Porsche’s 959 entries finished first, second and sixth in 1986. The 911 Dakar is a later road-going model that draws on that history; it was not either of those competition cars. Cayenne results discussed here came in the Transsyberia Rally, a separate event.
